Stolen from The Overlap last week

1. Ryder Cup

2. Super Bowl

3. Tour De France

4. World Cup Final

5. The Ashes

Mine is

1. Ryder Cup

2. The Ashes

3. WC Final

4. Super Bowl

5. TDF

Possible recency bias at the top of my order there, which may well change come December

My logic though, is that from the first tee shot to the last putt and everything in between really matters.

I genuinely had to Google the last WC Final result, likewise the one before. You’re never guaranteed an exciting, free scoring game, although they can often turn out to be.

Equally, if The Ashes ended up with every Test being like Stokes at Headingley, then I think it would be the most exciting sport in the world.

Go for it

Rank it how? The most popular or personal preference. If it's the latter it'd be...

1) World cup final

2) TDF

3) Ashes

4) Super Bowl

63210) Ryder Cup

They don’t say unfortunately. Very vague isn’t it

World cup final isn't always a great game and the tournament has been ruined to some extent but it's still the true global sporting event. There's really nothing else in the world I think that has its power.

I was speaking with people at work this week about how much I enjoyed the Ryder Cup more than anything I've watched in football for a long time and we spoke about other sporting events that march it.

Final day of a test match when all results are possible, not just the Ashes, and a tense world championship snooker match score quite highly for me too.

A world cup is great event though, and you do forget until it comes around again.

1) World Cup Final - biggest stage of the biggest sport in the world. Still a scarcity value as evey 4 years

2) Superbowl - biggest annual sporting event

3) Ashes - scarred from too many lost causes down under & fatigue can set in over 25 days of it

4) Ryder Cup - Can't be asked with golf generally, and the hyberbole around it out of all proportion

5) Tour De France - I'm sure they have all just found other ways to cheat, and it goes on and on for about a month

Not your question but in no particular order I love all of the following;

Six Nations (Cardiff or Lansdowne Rd). Cheltenham (Gold Cup)

Olympics (track)

Rugby World Cup (quarters)

...and I'd love international cricket too if they reduced the amount of games by 85%

Champions league final and Monaco gp are obviously missing from the list

For all of the hype, Champions League is probably the most purely entertaining tournament in sport. Helps that I very rarely care who wins.

1. Ryder Cup: best sporting event by far. The format is perfect.

2. World Cup Final. Massive engagement, my favourite sport. Pinnacle event.

3. The Ashes. I think this has potential to be higher but some are damp squibs. Always good fun competing with the Aussies mind.

4. Tour De France. People on bikes.

5. Super Bowl. Style over substance. Absolute shite.

Talking of the big sporting events, the Category A "crown jewels" of sports that legally have to be free to air in the UK are:

FIFA World Cup (all mens and womens matches)
UEFA European Championship (all mens and womens matches)
FA Cup Final

Grand National
Epsom Derby

Rugby league Challenge Cup final
Rugby union World Cup final

Wimbledon

Olympic Games & Paralympic Games

At least they have 1 of the 5 from the list as free...

World Cup Final

The Ashes

Ryder Cup

Tour De France

Super Bowl

not sure how the Super Bowl is even in contention the idea it’s a sporting event is ludicrous when the only reason people watch it is to see what tart is belting out a tune at half time

I don't hate American football but I refuse to believe anyone truly enjoys something that lasts that long for so little action. Really pushing the boundaries of the meaning of the word 'sport'

1) AS others have said the format for the Ryder Cup is perfect, I probably 1st watched it in 85, many matches just take you on that rollercoaster journey., though a number recently have been won by 5pts or more, but it can't de decided till the last day, so that is a plus for the excitement of it.  Bringing individuals in the most individual sport together as a team is a great idea and this format REALLY works.

2) For me its probably about the tournament rather than the final, been some great ones and again recency bias, last time was one of the best, there have been some shockers and sadly i went to one which was 1990.  Most from then till 2014 weren't great, tense but not quality

3) Again the Ashes have been great of late, though we get hammered out there, BUT from 1989 till 2005 we got battered most of the time so again???  It has its moments, I mean 2005 was stunning, the last home series, opportunity missed by stupidity early in the series & then surprisingly rain in Manchester

4) Sadly great spectacle, but plenty of games blowouts and for UK audience not practical

5) An event to be in awe of their physical capabilities, but so drug challenged over the last 40 years, whats the truth??  Didn't use to watch it but watch the highlights since Lance's time, nobody gave a monkey's though before any Brit won

Have to say I really like TDF and Giro d'Italia. Nice way to spend an evening watching highlights of people cycling very fast through some bucolic countryside.
