Probably London gang related. DMU was getting bad when i was a student years ago

Lad on my course never returned for the second year. I remember him telling me about how he had been nicked on a kidnapping charge🤣.  He was from London and it happened on the Narb Road area. Gang related

That was 20 years ago. I don't know how recent you were.

DMU massively recruits from London, even now having its own DMU London campus, and with that brings all of the gang issues with it...

For what reason?

The student victim of a fatal stabbing in Leicester city centre has been named in tributes left at the scene. People have been seen paying their respects and leaving flowers since the incident that shook the city on Tuesday (February 3).

Leicestershire Police said a man in his 20s was stabbed to death in Oxford Street, outside De Montfort University's Innovation Centre. An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Tributes at the scene of the incident on Thursday morning named the victim as Khaleed. A note accompanied by flowers reads: "To Khaleed and family. I am so saddened that your life has been taken too soon."

DMU was great when I did my masters there back in 2009. Really good university - never really saw any trouble or anyone causing any problems. What's happened?

All the baddasses go DMU if they cant get in any creditable "Uni"

No disrespect, just the truth its a standard joke in education circles.

Interesting! It was really highly accredited for my specific subject (journalism) but guess that's not reflective of the uni as a whole.

Ranked in the top  7% in the World?  Depends who you believe, we love dissing our own City though, don't we.   (figure from June 2025).

DMU will recruit anyone from anywhere if they pay. It's a business not a university. Just chasing the money.

It's a disgraceful institution.

Most Modern Universities do exactly the same in order to survive. In fact red brick and even elite Russell Group institutions have been forced to lower their entry standards to adapt to falling applications. In the case of the latter, this has even resulted in the appropriation of the upper echelons of the Modern/Teaching based institutions to get bums on seats. Following the 2006 Leitch Review and 2012's Browne Report, universities found themselves operating in an increasingly competitive demand lead market in which they made hay. A series of inherited costs, Brexit and the clampdown on international visas have resulted in plummeting revenue and a flooded market. Some have offset through endowments and reserves, whilst others are facing the impending prospect of collapse and closure. Diversification of income streams, (the pivot to degree apprenticeships and MATS for example), overhauling the recruitment model from semesters to blocks and outsourcing services overseas are now being pursued by the most agile and adaptive institutions. The research lead elite institutions meanwhile have substantial research revenue. Teaching based universities will accept virtually anyone through clearing in order to survive.

The entire situation reminds me of the sub prime collapse of 2009 and was similarly unsustainable. However, unlike the banks, there is no government or tax payer bail out for English universities. Unlike their Scottish counterparts, they are no longer in the public purse. The entire sector has been left to crash and burn.

Also not sure what the calibre of DMU has to do with this dreadful tragedy in which a student appears to have been the victim of rampant knife crime in our cities.

I was referring to the uni itself, not the specific tragic incident.

Thank you for clarifying.

Unfortunately, DMU finds itself in appreciable deficit along with approximately 40% of the sector. It had pedigree in some subject areas and has significantly contributed to the economy of the city. Its reputation has deteriorated as has the calibre of student. The entire Higher Education sector is in crisis largely due to inherited costs whilst government is largely indifferent. It's as though they believe a cull is necessary and that natural selection will ensure the survival of the fittest, meaning the elite, which was precisely what New Labour committed to challenging all those years ago. The former dichotomous model between University/Polytechnic should never have been have been removed.

Just all goes in line with the decline of the demographic of the country.

Walking the streets of any city at the moment highlights how downhill things are going.

And yet the rates of violent crime over the past few years, as well as decades are either stabilised or dropping.

I think social media has a certain part to play in inflating the level of the statistical threat, there.

NB. What exactly does "decline of the demographic of the country" mean, here? Curious as to the context.
