Having a chat at work about current world class players in premeir league and we could only think of 4, 2 of which are debatable.

fernandes, haaland, rice and donnarumma.

I got asked if have Leicester ever had players at the club in which they were world class?

Had a think and I could only name ngolo kante, who i think was world class level in his only season for us.

Vardy - whilst we love him, truthfully i dont think we was ever world class.

Mahrez - same again.

Cambiasso - past prime

Lineker- way too early for me but would get was possibly world class after leicester?

Banks - again way to early for me but seeing as no.1 keeper in world at some stage would guess world class?

Shilton - same as banks.

Kane - way too early in his career

Can anyone think of any else or maybe names worth a debate? Have to been playing at leicester at the time.

Kante? Is the obvious one. I’d argue Vardy and Mahrez were. Cambiasso had a world class brain and left foot. I’d say Fofana was too.

whilst playing for us ?

Kante

Mahrez

then you’d probably have to go back to Shilton and banks.  I may have missed one or two but honestly can’t think of anyone who’d actually be selected for a world 11 whilst at Lcfc

Ricardo for a period was very very good I thought.

I do think some people forget (not everyone) how good ricardo was pre- covid. Injuries killed him

At the time he was arguably the best right back in the league , either him or Trent

i think vardy, mahrez and ricardo were very elite, definately, but not world class.

World class gotta be where you are the best in the world in your position. Possibly among another 3-4 Names. Obviously differs from era to era.

Vardy - Better than Kane, lewandowski, ronaldo, benzema, luis suarez?

Mahrez - Better than Messi, robben, neymar, hazard, salah?

Ricardo - Better than carvajal, dani alves, lahm, kimmich?

Don;t get me wrong, not every player listed above could arguably be named world class but that is my point.

Its harder for players when they not in a team of equally talented players, the fact Mahrez was so good whilst playing for us, absolutely world class.  We wont have a better player in my lifetime.  Once in a generation player.
You might have big club syndrome.

Vardy was 100% world class as was Mahrez.

Really hate the Vardy revisionism that he was just a runner that could finish. Go through his goal compilation and the amount of finesse and technical ability is unreal.

Mahrez probably had the best first touch in football for a good 4 or 5 years

Its big club syndrome, if Vardy moved to Arsenal he would have got way more recognition, and probably would also have replaced Kane as England #1.

At what he did.... Vardy WAS world class.  he wasn't a "complete" striker... But in terms of playing on the shoulder, running in behind, there were very very few better.

Look at his shots to goal ratio, it's insane.

all those other strikers mentioned played a different game.

If Vardy had been at Utd, he would be seen as one of the PL Greats.

They should’ve found a way to play Kane and Vardy together.

Vardy is probably in the top 15 strikers in Premier League history, if you think about the other players that would be in it, they would all be world class, so why shouldn't he be?

  • Thierry Henry
  • Alan Shearer
  • Sergio Agüero
  • Wayne Rooney
  • Harry Kane
  • Didier Drogba
  • Luis Suárez
  • Eric Cantona
  • Ruud van Nistelrooy
  • Mohamed Salah
  • Robin van Persie
  • Fernando Torres
  • Andy Cole
  • Ian Wright
  • Jamie Vardy

Not really big club syndrome.

I wouldn't say Mahrez was world class at Man City.

In my lifetime watching Leicester Kante 100%. Best midfielder I imagine I'll ever see play for Leicester. Consistently put in an 8/10 minimum week in week out.

Arguably Mahrez as well, I couldn't see many teams leaving him out.

Obviously its entirely down to however you interpret "world class" so people agreeing on this invariably never happens.

Depends how you define world class. If its the best 22 players playing against eachother then maybe at the time Vardy and Mahrez just miss out as you had the likes of Messi, Bale, Ronaldo, Benzema etc.

If its about whether these players could participate in the latter stages of a world cup or champions league without looking out of place then they were.

Kante definitely meets both criteria. Gordon Banks as well as he was the best keeper around in the 60s and 70s.
