Lewis's Junior Posted 29 June Posted 29 June £15m would be absolute daylight robbery. I'm convinced he'll be here til the last day of his contract.
Popular Post AKCJ Posted 29 June Popular Post Posted 29 June "Deterred by his £15m value" means "**** off we're not paying that". We will have to take a loss on him. I can't see us breaking £10m. Even then I'd have your arm off. No hard feelings for him personally in the same way I will for the likes of Ayew, Winks etc He's just not worth the money we paid. If we got him for his actual value at the time I think we'd be happier. Putting £25m on the table for such an average midfielder is simply a sackable offence. I struggle to think of a time we've paid more than £3-4m on a midfielder that was worse than him. I can only think of Soumare. 8
TheGoldenGod Posted 29 June Posted 29 June Pound for pound gotta be our worst ever signing? Only thing he has on his Leicester CV is back 2 back relegations...madness for £25m!
les-tah Posted 29 June Posted 29 June (edited) We are just going to have to have a loan with an option to buy again at his book value and pray he has the season of his life we got to accept a loss on this one else will be a total loss in a few years and be disastrous Edited 29 June by les-tah

Remember, we sold Maddison to Spurs the summer before for £40m, and they still owed us instalments on that deal. When we signed Skipp, it had to look like a normal £20–25m transfer on paper for PSR reasons, but in reality both clubs probably just lined up the payment schedules so the money basically cancelled itself out. Instead of Spurs sending us £8m a year for Maddison and us sending them £4m a year for Skipp, they just mirror the payments. On the books it looks like we’re paying Spurs, but in real life Spurs are still paying us more than we’re paying them. Spurs get to book Skipp as pure profit, we keep Maddison income on our PSR, and everyone’s accounts look clean. So no — Skipp didn’t really cost us £25m. Not in any meaningful, cash‑out‑the-door way. DezFox Posted 29 June Posted 29 June Just before everyone gets excited. It literally saysinterested in skipp but will not pay 15 mill. They will have offered 3-4 mill or loan and pay wages. We are not getting 15m. Either we make a massive PSR loss on him or he leaves on loan for a year. 1

And loaned out the one good season we had during his contract haha. Still, he cost noticeably less and didn't cause us the same level of financial burden. What makes Skipp one of our worst (honestly, I think there's a strong argument for THE worst) signings is the context around it. He ate up such a massive amount of our budget in a position that wasn't anywhere near the weakest in the squad when we desperately need reinforcement elsewhere, he stopped us signing other players and he was never, ever going to make us profit. We could have made like Burnley, signed a bunch of cheap young players, had no worse odds of going down and at very least had a bunch of Hermansen-esque footballers we could sell on for profit to soften the blow. But no. As a piece of business that represents not just what he was as a player but what the loss of that money took from us I think I'd rank him higher than Slimani, Perez and Akinbiyi who would all make my top 5 worst deals we've done. For the record, rounding off my list as top 5 worst transfer dealings is an outgoing: letting Tielemans leave for free. 1

Why would we need to buy Skipp to offset money already owed to us. Unless you're saying Spurs had an IOU with us for them paying £40mil for Maddison instead of haggling and cashed it in to make us pay £25mil for Skipp. Which doesn't make sense as £40mil was a fair price for Maddison. Whatever way you spin it we have been fleeced. Edited 29 June by honeybradger 3

Has Winks got anymore time on his contract at Leicester? Somehow he had a clause where he is here until next Summer! I hope to god we get shot. As for Skipp, still to this day unsure of what the method was to bringing him in when we all knew we needed another striker. Anything we can get on the books now for him, same as the other leaches hanging on. I hate to say it, it's gonna be a long season 1
atomicfox Posted 29 June Posted 29 June Boro know we're desperate for money so are likely to low ball is. Good move for him if it goes through to be fair.

Scored double figures at Premier League level in the 2 seasons before we bought him for Newcastle. Our problem with him is that we signed him to be the Okazaki replacement but played him out wide on the right. He's always been more of a 2nd striker. I always thought he was a grafter and was handed a short straw here. 2
AKCJ Posted 29 June Posted 29 June Great signing for Everton by the way. Hackney, KDH and Garner is a really decent English midfield that can grow together for the next few years. I nearly said it was a really decent young English midfield but KDH is 27 now Mental that.
scinnell Posted 29 June Posted 29 June The problem with Skipp is that he is a good Championship player and his value should not be close to 20mil+. He would be one of the best players in a well functioning Championship team, but I fear for Boro if he is the Hackney replacement. 2
VLC86 Posted 29 June Posted 29 June We aren’t getting anywhere close to that for him. Teams will low ball us or drag it out all summer, everyone knows how ****ed we are.

We paid north of £30m and God only knows what in wages for a player we didn't understand the strengths and weaknesses of, had no need for in our system and were forced to dump out wide because that's where our actual gap was having mistakenly replaced Riyad with Ghezzal the year before. In the same window in the Premier League alone, Trossard, Fornals, Lookman, Danjuma, Neto, Saint-Maximim, Mbeumo, Sarr et all signed for rivals for noticeably less. Not to mention all of the Bowens of this world that were there for the taking that we turned our nose up at. I'm not suggesting any of those specifically were obtainable for us (Neto in particular only ever had Wolves all over him) but the point is the same. We fumbled absolutely massively, 30m was an ungodly amount for us and we splurged it away on someone we didn't need or understand at a time when we absolutely needed to kick on and had otherwise built the beginnings of a superb squad. It's not that Perez was one of our worst ever players, he wasn't, just as Skipp isn't. Both were hard done to by their fee. But as a waste of potential and momentum they're both right up with Slimani as some of our worst ever deals. 6

I think though if we'd played to Perez's strengths (or if we'd continued to be a mid-table Premier League club as we expected) then we'd look back on his time here as a success. We signed him because our Director of Football is useless and there's never continuity between him the manager. For the record, Perez is better than at least half of that list you gave and the others weren't as Premier League proven/ready as Perez was.

The opportunity cost was huge, sign a 6.5/10 winger and we'd have finished in the top 4 at least once. He's another people start to talk up more the worse we get but let's not forget he hosted the party during covid and missed more games through illness then I've ever noticed for a professional. Most of his goals were in games that were already won too like against Southampton and Sheffield United. 2
