I wonder if they will keep hold of Ahmed as it looks a pretty uninspiring squad if he leaves too!

If we do end up going down Budinger will do a good job at the top of the order and we will need Handscomb to come back and keep as don't rate Tattersall.

Batting or keeping?

Ben Cox leaving is now official! Nice one Thomas for not putting your ego to one side to allow us to keep one of the best wicket keepers in the country! 😡

A tragedy. Gutted.

I actually don't want all the points back there is no financial benefit to being in division 1 over 2 and I think it's better for the rebuild that will happen over the next two years to start in division 2 again.

Also from a supporter perspective games against sides with such obvious gulfs in class especially in the bowling ie Warwickshire are quite boring to watch.

A good result would be the suspended points and 5 grand back.

I would be fairly confident that we could mount a promotion bid again if we have Holland nipping out the top 3 or 4 every game, backed up by Davey and both Greens.

I've no idea, but I'm assuming that sponsorship and general income is a bit higher in div 1.

You'd hope that Tattersall will be good enough for Div 2.

Clearly not in the same league as Cox with bat or gloves though, he's going to be a huge loss.

Signed Josh Blake so he will keep. Not saying he us brilliant but seen him play a few times, tidy, decent bat

Ben Cox offered to take a pay cut to stay.

If that’s becuase of Thomas, Im starting to hate Thomas. The chaos is just not worth it.

But Henderson would not offer a new deal?

I bet Thomas was in his ear telling him not to offer him anything! 😡

It was flatly refused out of “principle”.

He’s gutted, didn’t want to leave.

Losing Hill and Cox in one go is big drop in experience. Cox's grit has been all that stood between us and humiliation at many points this season. Trevaskis is a loss as well I think.

More positively Handscomb would plug that hole, experience wise and the drop to D2 means we should be looking to younger and hungrier players more than 30+ players in my opinion.

My side for next season:

Gumbs

Budinger

Ahmed

Shaikh

Handscomb (c)

Blake/Tattersall (wk)

Scriven

Holland

B.Green

Davey

A.Green

Worryingly there is only Hull in reserve bowling wise and Eskinazi batting wise, plus whichever keeper misses out - none of whom I rate highly right now. Also no spinner if Ahmed is away, which seems less likely for next season to be honest at least. Letting Trevaskis go is poor as he could bat too.

I think Gumbs is the most obvious player where the remaining overseas slot could be used to find an upgrade but we'd need to find a couple more seamers somewhere for depth either way.

If looking nearer for an opening bat then Savin Perera could be an excellent pick up if available, a lot of runs for SACA and in second XI cricket as well as some decent knocks for Somerset in the ODC.

Perera is probably the biggest mystery in terns of why it took him so long to get a pro contract.

If Kent don't want him, I'd like to see us try to sign Bertie Foreman as a spinning allrounder. Doubt they'd go for him though as he's a standard offie.

I really don't get the Trevaskis love. He is only a white ball player and isn't good enough in either art in my opinion. A decent option for the 50 over comp but we need players effective in all formats. To me we need a frontline finger spinner and Rehan can compliment it when he is available.

I think that he was an excellent white ball bowler (sub 8 economy in t20) and whilst his bowling in red ball was never top drawer it was good enough to compliment a frontline spinner (which is what Rehan could be) on a spinning deck where 2 spinners would be warranted. Such a situation is rare in this country which is why he was again valuable with his batting average of 29.9 with 10 50s meaning he can more than hold a bat.

So for a county like us without the budget for a big squad he offers:

White ball bowling

Backup spinner

Batting depth

Great fielder

I think that's a useful and versatile skillset to have at our level.

And...if he'd have had the overs that Ajaz Patel had this season then I'm sure he'd have got a similar amount of wickets
