Interesting to see overseas players going so well this season with the bat. Suggests that maybe the problem isn’t English conditions but more to do with poor coaching in academies?

Shame Mulder’s gifted his wicket away after getting 50 after Evans got shafted with a dodgy lbw decision earlier.

Mike backing up his bowling by batting well too.

Yeh Mike really going for his shots, lovely to see. There is a good player in there if he can pull everything together consistently. Nicko said he was getting on well with Alfonso Thomas, so maybe it is having an effect.

Agreed. Looked our best player this match I'd say.

243-7 so at least making them bat again and showing a bit of fit and Mike has hit his best 1st class score

Hopefully he sees it through to the 100.

So, so gutted for Mike. Batted so well and really deserved a ton.

Went at a good clip and certainly has made a case to bat higher though, especially when almost everyone else is falling over themselves to suggest they need to go lower.

Gutted for Mike.

When Mike is making the rest of them look bad you know we are in for an embarrassing season

Time for a change.

Two lucky draw escapes, sh@t on at home to Derby and now over and out in two and a half days.

I’ve had enough.

I'm inclined to agree. Just can't see any signs of progress.

I always tend to compare us with Derbyshire due to what I assume would be similar budgets. Last season we both struggled but I think we had several players who'd have got into their side quite easily - Hill, Harris, Swindells, Parkinson, Wright. This year I don't think they'd take anyone and most of their XI look like they would walk into ours.

Ignoring the overseas players the rest are the same so the difference is Arthur vs Nixon. They've obviously pulled off a fair old coup getting a world class coach so fair play but the comparison has become grim.

Playing squad needs a proper reset, issue is it would take a number of years and should have started a few years back. Instead we've just taken on more dross.

Nixon probably needs to go as well and I'm going to keep suggesting Griffith like it'll happen if I do.

Derbyshire also lost their top run scorer and all-rounder last season (Critchley) to Essex.

And Finn Hudson-Prentice to Sussex and their keeper Harvey Hosein, who had to retire.

Their previously unheralded keeper Guest did well against Glamorgan with two tons at first drop. Seems to have put his hand up and said "I'll bat 3" and showing now he can do the job.

Anyone in our squad who could do the same? We've two gritty but slow scoring openers so going to be tough to get the balance in the top 3 right. I wonder again if when fit Hill could open perhaps offering a better blend and changing the dynamic for whomever goes in at 3.

The theory used to be that your best batter went in at 3. Despite his poor recent form Ackers is our best batter and should bat at 3. Hill, when fit, at 4, then we have a look at Patel at 5, Mulder 6 and Swindells 7. Parky and Barnes are decent at 8 and 9.

Would probably agree with that. Although no room for Super Ben Mike!?

Good point. And Rehan of course comes into the reckoning now he’s fit. Mike at 8, Parky at 9, Barnes 10, Wright 11. Mulder the fifth bowler at 6. Drop Hendricks.
