Never seen Nirvana mentioned on here really and I always thought they were quite good when I was 14-15years old.

Some people seem to hate them, but I thought their albums were much better than their singles that were released, althouh 'Come As You Are' is quality. Been listening to Nevermind and Unplugged in New York recently.. thinking they're brilliant.

I know they were heavily influenced by The Pixies, Sonic Youth and possibly Dinosaur Junior, but I think Kurt was a genius.

In Utero is a great album, but Kurt was nothing particularly amazing. Some decent riffs, good lyrics and an okay voice does not make someone a genius. Dave Grohl has more talent in his little finger than Kurt ever had.

Edit: Oh and you're right about the album tracks being way better.

And also, all those other bands mentioned > Nirvana.

I was never a fan of Nirvana and think they were vastly overrated I think there were better bands around at the time, before and after imo instead of starting a generation of music they were infact the nail in the coffin for a generation of music. They destroyed an era of music that had started with the likes of the Ramones through the likes of Black Flag, Minor threat, Circle Jerks, Bad Brains and Husker Du, The Pixies etc

Nirvana were the major label commercialisation and over exposure product that made a music scene implode on itself

I would also like to argue the fact that I would say many of the bands above have had and will have more of an impact and influence on the artists of today than Nirvana ever have

Hüsker Dü and Black Flag had folded by the time Nirvana came along so not sure how Nirvana were the nail in their coffin and The Pixies although not as commercially successful as Nirvana at the time have gone on to do well for themselves.

Whether you like it or not Nirvana admittedly with the help of MTV brought this genre of music to the masses and a lot of bands have them to thank for it.

As a song writer? Well yeah if you like boring, uninspiring radio friendly rock.

The post mortems that have been carried out on Kurt's lyrics reveal, whether intended by their writer or not, details of polarised mental states. These are perhaps symptomatic of the disillusioned youth or 'Generation X' segment of society in the late eighties and early nineties. Correct me if I'm wrong, but does Grohl ever deal with anything as complex? Even if he could (and he probably posesses the depth) he has always struck me as a complete money making machine.

Nirvana's singles are boring uninspiring radio friendly rock, and yes I agree FF's are too, but Nirvana's album tracks are brilliant and way better than any of their singles. As is the case with FF.

Nirvana were cool. Not genius by any stretch of the imagination, but for angst-ridden (i.e. emo-shite) rock, they did the job. Besides, if it wasn't for Nirvana we wouldn't have the Foo Fighters!

I think you are wrong there. What Nirvana did in the UK was put the nail in the coffin of rave music and brought rock music back from the dead. During the rave years not a lot happened on the live scene. People just did not go to gigs anymore. Nirvana changed that.

Yes they took a commercial direction when they moved from sub pop to griffen but that did not spell the death of rock music, in my view it made it more accessable than during the rave years and brought life into the rock scene.

I would agree that the other bands you listed have had a greater influence on todays bands than Nirvana but they were not the grim reaper of rock music that you make them out to be.

I think the emergence of Britpop had far more to do with the resurgence of live music than anything Nirvana did.

Besides, as Daggers says, they weren't that great a live band, at least when they toured over here.

i never really got into them, although i had the infinite pleasure of seeing sonic youth, dinosaur jr and (and why have they not been mentioned yet) mudhoney live, and all were fabulous experiences.

nirvana wouldn't have happened were it not for SY, who then kind of (depending on yr take) followed them down the road to commercial success signing to geffen and using a (very good) producer for dirty (which is like a grunge/punk pet sounds, if you ask me).

nirvana were iconic before coabain's death, even more so after it - as for genius, nah, just good at what they did.
