Geo V Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 So Milan says it was his idea?! I thought it was the Trusts idea? Anyway, thankfully we won after the gesture but Im sure some prats like the Florist fans will find reason to make it as a negative thing. I havent bought a paper today yet but heres hoping we are giving some good press for once.
Guest Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 I wondered if something like this would happen. A good gesture by the club and one that makes me proud to be a City fan, but I don't think it will be setting any precedents, to be fair.
Kent Fox Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 I think we should do it EVERY week it if it means we attack for last 20 minutes instead of defending our arses off and conceding. (That was a joke, by the way, in case some tw@t doesn't realise it)
Fez of Mahrez Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 LONDON (AP) -Leicester is being praised for its sportsmanship after allowing Nottingham Forest to score a goal in a League Cup match being replayed because a player collapsed with a heart failure during the original game. The Leicester players stood aside to let Forest goalkeeper Paul Smith walk up the field with the ball and kick it into an open net after 23 seconds of Tuesday night's second-round game. Leicester manager Gary Megson said the gesture was in reaction to Nottingham leading 1-0 in the initial match on Aug. 28 when it was abandoned at halftime after Leicester defender Clive Clarke collapsed in the dressing room. Clarke is now recovering. Leicester, which plays in the League Championship, still won the game 3-2 with a 90th-minute goal from Stephen Clemence. "We felt it was morally right for us to come here and start 1-0 behind in reacting to what went on three weeks ago,'' Megson said. "As a football club we felt it was the right way to behave and it was a gesture meant in the spirit of the game.'' Forest manager Colin Calderwood hailed the decision. "Leicester felt it was the correct thing to do and I must admit it took us back a little bit to start with,'' Calderwood said. "But it was an honorable gesture and I would like to think that football in general has come out ... the winner.'' British media were also full of praise Wednesday. "Proof there is still some decency in football,'' read the back page of The Sun newspaper. A Daily Telegraph headline said: "Generous Leicester get their reward.'' Megson said he told Calderwood of the plan 20 minutes before the kickoff. "Obviously, it turned out right for us because we have made the gesture and ended up winning the game and going through to a very attractive tie against Aston Villa next week,'' Megson said. I'm beaming.
Joe. Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 Obviously to start with I was unhappy we'd let them have the goal. But after what's happened it was definitely the right thing to do. I'm glad it's getting the credit it deserves.
Daggers Posted 19 September 2007 Author Posted 19 September 2007 http://www.bettingzone.co.uk/story_get.cgi...ual_103214.html Decency seems to be contagious
Fez of Mahrez Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 Can someone quote that bettingzone story.
The People's Hero Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 Can someone quote that bettingzone story. Certainly... BETTING HEADLINES Megson - great gesture from the Foxes. BOOKIES MATCH SPORTING GESTURE Bookmakers William Hill have announced that they will be paying out on both the official result of the Carling Cup game between Nottingham Forest and Leicester on Tuesday night - which ended 2-3 to the Foxes - and also as though the opening goal had not been scored. The first goal of the game was scored when the the two teams allowed Forest keeper Paul Smith to walk through to score the goal - as Forest had been a goal ahead when the first match was abandoned after Leicester defender Clive Clarke collapsed in the dressing room at half-time with heart failure. "As the official result in the record books will be a 3-2 win for Leicester with Smith scoring the first goal and the game being level at half time with Leicester winning at the end, we have no choice but to pay out on those outcomes," said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe. "However, on this occasion and given the nature of the incident, we are quite happy also to pay out as though the first goal hadn't happened - making Leicester's Alan Sheehan scorer of the 'first' goal, the game result 1-3, with Leicester leading at both half and full time." After the game Leicester boss Gary Megson explained: "It was something that the chairman, chief executive and myself decided two or three days ago. "We felt it was morally right for us to come here and start 1-0 behind in reacting to what went on three weeks ago. "As a football club we felt it was the right way to behave and it was a gesture meant in the spirit of the game. "I had a chat with Forest manager Colin Calderwood 20 minutes before the kick-off to explain what we had in mind but it was kept very quiet until just before the start."
tbf Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 i was finishing my pint at the first kick off, came onto the terraces for us to kick off again and had no idea why we were one nil down, i had to ask someone behind me what had happened!! Daggers Posted 19 September 2007 Author Posted 19 September 2007 League Hail City's Act Of SportsmanshipPosted on: Wed 19 Sep 2007 The Football League has praised Leicester City following events at The City Ground last night (Tuesday). After the initial Carling Cup second round tie had been dramatically abandoned three weeks ago, the Foxes gifted their local rivals an opening goal within 15 seconds. They allowed Paul Smith to walk the ball unaided into the back of their net but the visitors hit back to win 3-2 thanks to goals from Alan Sheehan, Richard Stearman and Stephen Clemence. City will now meet Aston Villa in the third round next Wednesday at Villa Park (7.45). Football League Head of Communications John Nagle said: "Football League Chairman Lord Mawhinney contacted Leicester City Chief Executive Tim Davies this morning to offer his congratulations to the club on last night's act of sportsmanship. "Leicester's actions are a demonstration of football at its very best. "Previously Lord Mawhinney had also contacted Nottingham Forest following the original match to congratulate them on their good sportsmanship in agreeing to the abandonment of the game. "The sporting attitudes shown by Nottingham Forest and Leicester City across these two matches reflect extremely well on the game of football."
Kent Fox Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 How cool are we? Everyone should be a Leicester suppoerter. I am currently extremely proud to be a life long fan of this club.
Raj Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 My initial opinion was i'm glad City did let Forest have that goal. After sleeping on it,i'm sure it was the best thing that they could have done. Not only were we winners last night, but so was football! Well Done City! And im glad WillHill are paying out to both bets...Well done willhill And well done to anyone who deserves a well done... WELL DONE!
Lovejoy Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 Good gesture. Best all round though that we won
Trav Le Bleu Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 Superb example of sportsmanship that was obviously agreed between the managers/chairmen before the match (You wouldn't let your goalie up front for the kick-off on the "off-chance" that the other team "might" do the right thing) Have to say though, nearly back-fired BIG TIME! Sticks and Clem get my Egg-on-face Savers Award 2007
Wycombe Fox Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 My 10 year-old lad, a keen City supporter, just came home from school and rushed upstairs to tell me about his school assembly today. The Headmaster told the school the story about how, in today's success and money-driven world, Leicester City made the gesture they did in the name of fair-play and sportsmanship. He usually has to face a bit of a barrage from the Pompey and Saints fans but today my little chap is so proud to be a City supporter bless 'im. Well done Leicester City Football Club
Simi Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 A very good thing to do definitely, a great gesture, also an example to the rest of the teams out there. I thought if it was going to happen we would know about it, but thinking about it, it probably did save a lot of trouble.

James. Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 This is all very pleasant. I even got a little tingle going through me after reading some of this. I love you Leicester.
Webbo Posted 19 September 2007 Posted 19 September 2007 Very proud about this. Bet it'll be around the world in a day or 2. And we won as well. All good stuff.
