Manwell Pablo Posted 27 November 2007 Posted 27 November 2007 Really? that's why since Muzzy left, we have had shit delivery from all set pieces until this year, when Sheehan finally became a regular Actually one of the few times that Stephen Clemance has taken a couple of corners from the right hand side of the pitch it has resulted in goals two goals. People moan about how dreadfull out set piece delivery has been for years, yet Paddy notched 7 goals last season, McAuley four, McCarthy one, Stearman 3, Kenton 2, and Nills 1. Now, how many of those 18 goals do we think came from set pieces?
andyh1884 Posted 27 November 2007 Posted 27 November 2007 How has a thread about the quality of Sheehan's set pieces descended into a slanging match about his ability? Presumably because people just can't resist having a pop at our players. The topic is about his set piece delivery, I'm sure there's plenty of threads to slate his defending if you want to go and find them, but I suppose it's just much easier to hijack one that someone's started to praise this aspect of his game - it's not like it's a general thread on the pros & cons of Alan Sheehan. Last night his delivery, as it has been for much of the season, caused problems for their defence. Personally, I think there's a risk with putting balls that close to the keeper that refs will just blow up every time for a foul on him due to the number of bodies that will invariably be around him. Fortunately that didn't happen last night & as a result we were desperately unlucky not to score from a couple of those.
teblin Posted 27 November 2007 Posted 27 November 2007 Hume can take a decent free kick. As could Joey G too. hmmmm, corners are not good and wouldn't say he takes that many good free kicks.
Manwell Pablo Posted 27 November 2007 Posted 27 November 2007 hmmmm, corners are not good and wouldn't say he takes that many good free kicks. Hume seems to get his free kicks on target they're just never hard enough (shooting wise)
Daz.I Posted 27 November 2007 Posted 27 November 2007 Set pieces are very go od from sheehan but it doesn't justify him being in the team as he doesn't do much else apart from his set pieces.
David O'Leary Posted 27 November 2007 Posted 27 November 2007 That is a bit harsh don't you think, he's not the best left back we've ever had but he is far from poor Bet you'd have Kenton taking them
Jack Posted 27 November 2007 Posted 27 November 2007 Bet you'd have Kenton taking them Nah Kenton should be in the box scoring all the goals Mate
Foxhateram Posted 27 November 2007 Posted 27 November 2007 as he does Sheehans deliveris last night were brilliant, if we had, had someone like Les Ferdinand upfront lat night we would have scored a hat full. The reason sheehan doesnt cross as well from open play is because as son as he takes a freekick the opposition indentify him as a crossing threat and man mark him. Last night the defenders were staying very close to him most of the game and therfore preventing a decent ball to come into the box. TBH we needed to be more patiant last night and play the ball on the floor through the defence due to us having two small men upfront, however we failed to recognise this and carried on pumping high balls into the box. sheehan has a long way to go before becoming a good LB but he is on his way and hes only 21 he has plenty of time to improve and should reach his peak within the next 2-3 years good luck to him, and i hope he has the cahnce to shine rather than being shipped off on loan or being put in the reserves due to a january tranfer replacement. id rather us build our team and advance our team to become good players then buy our way to success! Money is to much of a matter in football these days and it discusts me.

From open play he tends to loft the crosses, it's something he needs to work on, he doesn't have enough in his locker to warrant a first team place as and when Holloway improves his squad!!!

Finally, now will everyone just agree with the above statement and we can close this bad boy of a thread down....

sam_lcfc Posted 27 November 2007 Posted 27 November 2007 Sheehan's set pieces have been class this season on the whole. Without his delivery Im sure we would be in serious trouble as otherwise we just don't look like scoring. Not sure if this has been mentioned or not but Im also very happy Mattock is now at Left Back and Sheehan left wing as his defending can be really poor at times. It will be interesting to see if the attack minded Holloway will stick with Mattock and Sheehan or include Hayes in the staring XI, as Sheehan was uninspired from open play. If Hayes plays its a difficult decision who plays at LB, the more solid defender or the dead ball specialist?! I would be inclined to pick the solid defender and let Clemence or even Hume take set pieces.
Fox92 Posted 27 November 2007 Posted 27 November 2007 His corners are brilliant and so are his free-kicks.
DB11 Posted 27 November 2007 Posted 27 November 2007 Well they are either very good or very crap Thankfully the majority were very good
Geo V Posted 27 November 2007 Posted 27 November 2007 I haven't seen any football for a month now so hopefully Sheehans all round game has improved but there is little doubt that he has a high quality left peg and can cause real problems from set pieces. Its strange really that last season with the likes of Tiatto taken corners and free-kicks we seemed to score more goals though although I may be wrong. I know Kissa was scoring plenty and has done OK again but I`d thought with Sheehans delivery, we should be getting more goals?
Wasyls Pec Deck Posted 27 November 2007 Posted 27 November 2007 I cannot believe ppl some ppl on here are criticising him!!! He has the best set piece deliveries since Guppy in my opinion and his overall game has come leaps and bounds over the last 18 months/2 years. Start him left back, as he linked up well with Hayes and Mattock as backup....tasty!! Rudkin and Beagle must have been proud last night...No one disgraced themselves and actually some of em made claims over current first teamers (ie. Chambers over Cort for me etc).... With Weso, Mattock, Sheehan, Chambers and others I read about on here, surely the futures more than bright for City!!!??

I think his problem is he isn't so good defending but I`d rather see him at left-mid as its in forward positions where he could cause harm with that left foot. It needn't be just from set-pieces.
Wezleylowski Posted 27 November 2007 Posted 27 November 2007 Steve beaglehole seems to have a knack for developing very good youngsters. A Leeds fan who has been a season ticket holder for 35 years told me Beags was at Leeds when a very good young crop came through the academy with the likes of Alan Smith, Harry Kewell and Jonathon Woodgate amonst them. He may have produced another with Sheehan, and Kingy too, oh and Wezo and Chambers.
Staf Posted 27 November 2007 Posted 27 November 2007 I actually get excited when we have set pieces now because i know that we have someone who can deliver a good ball in the box

Money is to much of a matter in football these days and it discusts me. Sheehan has aspects of his game that need improving but if you can find any left back/left midfield player who's likely to be involved in scoring/creating so many goal chances I'd like to know who he is.

I haven't seen any football for a month now so hopefully Sheehans all round game has improved but there is little doubt that he has a high quality left peg and can cause real problems from set pieces. Wezleylowski Posted 27 November 2007 Posted 27 November 2007 And Mattock and Gradel... Oh yeah i forgot about our Joey. The jury's still out on Gradel, because i havn't witnessed him first hand. He sounds very good aswell though

Can't emember ever disagreeing with you on anything so I suppose there's always a first time. His volleyed pass to Hume last night when he hit a post and his low cross which Weso failed to despatch from a couple of yards were hardly lofted. First team? I would think he's one of the first on the teamsheet these days because our team is hardly full of players who make things happen and neither is the rest of the League's teams.
Thracian Posted 27 November 2007 Posted 27 November 2007 Do you people actually like Thracian's stat attacks or something? Can't be bothered. The evidence is well enough known and there for anyone to see if they care to look.
