I don't even think it's much of a deterrent. If it was, then there wouldn't be any one on death row, would there? And there's over 3000 people in the States awaiting execution, according to Wikipedia, all of whom are presumably there for doing something dreadful, and the fact that they risked having their own life snuffed out by the state didn't stop them

i do believe not all states in the U.S has the death penality. If i could be bothered, i would be interested to find out what the difference is in % of murders between a state that did have it and a state that didnt have it per 1 thousand of their population

No, there were flaws with the death penalty.. I remember reading a true story on someone who hung around with a person when they shot at two policemen and the person who shot the two people got 5 years in prison because he was under 18 years of age however the person who hung around with him got the death penalty for saying "Let Him Have it", when the other person was aiming the gun at the policeman..as it was an ambiguous statement.

"Yes, innocent people die, but as it isn't an ideal world, I would take the small percent of innocent people dying over the lives ruined by criminals reoffending."

Not if it was your kid you wouldn't.

True story.

And while we are on the subject of true stories, I give you four words that some of you may be familiar with:

"LET HIM HAVE IT"

It's too late to go back once you've made this kind of decision.

I work in the courts.

Each court should be fair and equal in every way.

If I was up for any offence, I can tell you now I would like to pick my judge/bench, my prosecutor, my gender, my ethnicity, my timing (considering media input), my brief, and my area of the country the court hearing took place.

I would like to do this because I KNOW I could significantly have a better chance of swaying the outcome wether I was guilty or innocent.

On such a lottery I therefore do not think it right or just for the courts to have such a power.

It's a question of representation. Who is being represented, by whom and for what reasons?

It's labelling theory at its most simplistic level. who has the power to put the label on whom and for what reasons. (these are undoubtedly socio-political agenda's that are wide ranging but simply put its about the organisation of power and who's interests it serves.)

Mines a firm NO ladies and gentlemen.

The defence rests.

Derek Bentley had a mental age of about 12. his lawer was crap and did not even mention that he suffered from epolepsy. The conviction was made on a eyewitness a few hundred yards away who was not wearing their glasses at the time. All the lighting there was, was a street lamp. Craig the younger one had a fasination about guns and hero-worshipped his elder brother who was a small time crook but took it bad when he was sent down for robbery. It was his intention to cause trouble that night.

With the appeal it went to the houses of Parliment and the day before the execution they said they would give a decision after. Basically they wanted the execution to set an example for the youth of the day. Just after the war and life was hard for a lot of families.

I have the film and I wrote an essay on the case for a nightschool course. I even went to the library and read the old newspapers which is where I got the bit about the street lighting.

Craig served his time and since his release has been a model citizen with a family. If alive he would be about 70 and no doubt moaning about how soft we are on crimminals. At the time he was a reckless youth who took the wrong path in his early years. No doubt he regrets what happened and I bet those that knew him on his release never knew his history and regard/ed him as a top bloke.

Could be your neighbour or drinking buddy.

I say " Yes" to the death penalty!!

Altough i would usually say let these bastards rot in jail, we really know that they do not, prison is a luxury and people are virtually on a waiting list to get in to these prisons!!!!!

What happend to the old days, where prisoners didnt even see the light of day... Now you get Murderers, Rapists and Pedo's having consoles in there cells, TV's, days out, luxury food!!!

WHAT IS HAPPENING!!!

We are paying for all of this!!! They have ruined peoples lives and we are paying towards there keeping.... It is beyond a joke to say the least..... they must love it!!

So this is why i am saying there should be a death penalty, these guys love being in prison so why should we give them that luxury, i say a slow and painfull death is what they should get!!

Lets start being a ruthless nation again!!!

We are too soft, thats why there is scum on our streets doing these things!!

I'm sure I would not be happy at all if that happened, but you can't make a generalised decision on specific events.

I would prefer the "hard work chain gang" option over the death penalty, but there was no option for that, and it isn't going to happen!

A friend of mine went to jail for a year a while ago for dangerous driving. They had TVs (they used to watch prison break every week), pool tables, in his cell they had a TV, PS2 and a cd player. They played football on saturdays and had nice meals. They had all their washing done for them and brand new clothes issued to them on arrival. This was a place that had people serving 25 year sentences for murder - not the greatest deterent in the world is it!!!

There's no question that some become institutionalised, they actually feel more ableto cope in a prison situation than on the outside and will commit other crimes simply to get back.

Crime and punishment is a complex problem. All cases are different anyway and while guidelines are provided for sentencing I'm not at all sure they are broad enough.

But there are other issues apart from simple crime, detection, trial and sentence.

Just as disclosure....these statistics are prepared by an organization committeed to eliminating the death penalty. Stastics used deviously to prove a point? Unheard of.

No. Some people are total scum and will kill again.

Some murderers had issues and may have been at a state of disposition.

Some people deserve a second chance.

Surely then the solution is to toughen up jails rather than start killing people?

I fail to see how "Our jails are too soft" leads to "Lets kill them all!"

Aye Jails should just be A bed, toilet, table, chair and a stink. Nothing More.

I don't see why they get all these luxurys i really don't.

I agree mate!!

But to back my point up, the reason i am saying yes to the death penalty is infact in reference to the point you made!!

I too would rather our prisons be toughend up, but nothing seems to be done so that is why these inmates are living a fantastic life on the inside!!

So what i am saying is "would i rather see these people behind luxury bars" or "killed via the death penalty"

Easy choice to me, why let them enjoy there life inside for what they have done on the outside..

To be honest i think we are a long way off having a prison overhaul!!! But the uk wont implement the death penalty either!!!

So in the end.... whatever we say is pointless!!! lol
