Top Clubs Consider Playing Overseas

Recommended Posts

It would completely backfire on us, because empty stadiums would give the Premier League and chairmen the ammunition to take our game abroad to full grounds.

There is nothing we can do, if the Premier League want to do it, it will happen. Simple as. We are an annoying hindrance on the game to them.

The best way to protest would be for everyone to cancel their Sky Sports contract unfortunately that wont happen because many of the subscibers don't go to see live matches anyway and are probably salivating at the thought of these games.

Don't read them then, numbnuts.

While you read of others, there's a world out there. Have you ever thought of looking for it ?

I really didn't expect anyone to think this was a good idea and thats understandable Its your league and a great league and why should you have to share it. But what people need to remember is that the fans aren't loesing any home or away games it is an extra fixture played on a neutral venue if clubs are going to get relegated or win the league they can't blame one game.

On the other side of the coin and this sums up what all the fans of the big clubs, and the media, e.t.c, their big question is what if Man Utd need a point to take the league of Chelsea but the additional game is against Arsenal?

Fair enough luck of the draw some might say but no, The proposal or an idea for the proposals are the top 4 teams would be seeded, giving them special, some might say "easier" treatment.

Yet hang on why should teams such as Derby/Sunderland/Wigan/Birmingham e.t.c risk having to play Man Utd/Arsenal/Chelsea/Liverpool? What if one of the relegation fighting teams needed a point to stay up? Wheres their special treatments of being seeded?

But fuk the struggling teams with "proper" fans, lets just worry about who'll win the Premiership instead, brush everything else under the carpet!

I'm not saying you can blame winning the Premiership or getting relegated from the Premiership on one game but the point i'm trying to make is special loopholes...

It might just have been acceptable if the idiots in charge were doing it for altruistic or philanthropic reasons but they are doing it for one reason and one reason only to line THEIR pockets with more money. Whatever bullshit passing as justification that emanates from their greedy mouths nothing else comes into the equation for them just

Its not about numbers, it would be as wrong if it was one game out of eighty as if it was one game out of eight! Its about percentages - 100% should be played at the clubs' home grounds, end of!

If there's one point in it, then yes, they can quite easily blame getting relegated on one game!

If you want to see a premiership game then get on a plane, don't try and steal it, destroying it in the process - its really as simple as that.

DavieG, you're forgetting what the modern game is all about, its not just about ££££. Its about ££££££££££££££££££$$$$$$$$$££££££££££££. Get it right! :P

That's not the point. The whole point in a league is for symmetry. The move is born out of pure greed and that's all there is to it. There are no positives from and English fans point of view, just the clubs will get more money. The countries that want to host such events should put the millions of pounds they're looking to splash out into their own leagues and academies instead to make more and more people watch them.

I guess that is a lose interpretation of who gets the money - more specifically the people running the clubs will get their greedy mitts on more because I can't really see player wages going up significantly and neither can I see the price of admission falling.

...But what people need to remember is that the fans aren't loesing any home or away games it is an extra fixture played on a neutral venue if clubs are going to get relegated or win the league they can't blame one game.

At no time does a match in England involve a team having to travel for 8-12 hours on a flight there and then the same back, to play in atmospheric conditions of extreme temperature or humidity. Not only that, but if one team travels to such a place to play a match then surely it is right that all teams do likewise?

To state that fans are not losing out (the comment presumably directed at season ticket holders) is tosh - if your team loses out on promotion or relegation by two points then this one fixture has had a direct impact on the outcome of a season. Not only that, but the latest 'briefs' eminating from those that be indicate that this move would come in conjunction with a mid-season break and an end to relegation from the Premiership. Explain to me how the later fail to impact on fans?

As a kid I pawed over stat books, drinking in irrelevant information about clubs the length and breadth of the country - my son is starting to do the same...but to what end? What do these stats mean if football ceases to exist in the traditional league format? One can point to the restructuring of the leagues pre-war and post-war but they did not carry the fundamental shift in emphasis that these proposals do, that effectively state that 'fans' no longer count in the equation, that the Americanisation of the national sport is now complete.

You, or anyone else, can colour this any which way you want to try to Soccyfox...but the simple fact is that this proposal rips the last vestiges of respect from the soul of football. The game is about regional affiliation - the minute that this crucial aspect of it is removed you are left with nothing other than hollow allegiance based on colour or nickname...something devoid of emotion, which just happens to be the mindset of the person who only wants to watch one game a year.

Taking terracing away from the nation was barely tollerable.

This action would be unforgivable.

This idea makes me feel sick. Its endemic of everything that's wrong with English football. The FA is so pathetic, they done absolutely nothing to restrain the Premier League since it broke away from the rest of English football. Policies like this are driven by purely by a shameless lust for money by the suits than run the Premiership. The managers that support this idea should be ashamed of themselves. What are you supposed to do if you're a fan that goes to every game your club plays-sorry mate, the next match is in Shanghai.

An even better way would be to take banners proclaiming "No To Gam£ 39" to EVERY televised fixture and display them in prominent sites.

May be too late to organise this for tonight's fixture, but if done regularly I'm sure Sky viewers would get the message.

Whats Game 39???

Do they only play 38 in the Premier so this foreign game is the extra one??

But i thought they were playing more than one??/

So shouldnt it be Game 39,40,41 etc...??

I am actually NOT taking the piss for a change. :)

How do you think the fans who travel home and away feel about this? You know, the ones who stand on temporary stand on a freezing cold and windy day at Blackpool, or take time off work to travel to Plymouth on a Tuesday night not once, but twice in the space of a couple of weeks? To try and justify this shenanigan in this way is insulting at the very least. If this game doesn't matter that much, then stick to pre-season friendlies/tours, and stop treating the real fans like twats.

I can't answer this but it is an important game 3 points is three points and it doesn't take away from the fan they doesn't lose games

It depends how you look at it. In terms of fixtures, no, fans wouldn't be losing a game. But thay would, in essence, be losing their club. It would no longer exist as a local source of pride, but a tool for those who wish to further their own financial interest. I have no issue with games being played abroad in some format, but not during the season, and certainly not for points. The idea of a league season is to prove who the best and worst sides are over the course of a symetrical season, on a level playing field, every side having played the same sides in the same places. It simply would not to be fair to be relegated on the basis that you have lost 3 times to Manchester United when your nearest rivals have gained 1 point out of 9 from 3 games against Middlesbrough and survived by that point, which may have been gained in Japan. It skews the league table and that should not be allowed.

This is going to happen and I don't think theres much we can do, although that shouldn't stop us from trying.

So how about this as a proposal?

Premier League teams no longer enter the League Cup. The Auto Windscreen (not called that now I know but thats how I know it!) is scrapped, and the Football League sides fight it out for a place in Europe, thus giving something back to lower league sides. This results in less games for everybody, as the competition would be shorter without Premiership sides, and for the lower league clubs without the Auto Windscreens. The premier League clubs play a small tournament involving only the sides which finish in the top 8 in the league in pre season every season, which is hoted by the preferred non-European bidder every summer. This way, the best clubs will compete in a tournament which over time may become relevant to them, perhaps giving players who don't normally achieve the feat of playing the international tournaments a small taste of the experience, albeit at a much reduced level. And more importantly for the Premier League money men, their "product" is being advertised by the best clubs in the country, at little cost because of the small number of games being played, and allowing fans abroad to see decent football.

Now I personally would prefer that things remain as they are, but if a compromise has to be made, I think something along these lines is something I could stomach. Despite the joy that the League Cup had given me personally, my personal view for a long time has been that it should be scrapped, the Premeir League reduced to 18 teams and promotion/relegation achieved based on the Italian example, where the top 3 go up automatically, unless the gap between 3rd and 4th is less than 10 points, in which case there are play offs like we have here. This would mean less games, less complaint from teams who feel hard done by, by the play off system, and mayve as a result more achievemant on the international stage. I don't think two national cup competitions are necessary.

The protest that seems most popular at the moment seems to be a protest outside FA Headquarters or PL's. Something will definitely happen.

FA would be no good though, the Premier League are independent. Having said that, a protest outside Lancaster Gate may encourage the FA to lean on the Premier League. Could the FA refuse call up players to the England squad? I know this could have a disastrous effect on the naional side, but it may encourage the players to revolt. ishful thinking I know. But whatever it takes should be done to prevent this from happening.

The FA have still gave their blessing though. Despite preaching about how much they care about the England team.
