MC Prussian Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 I have the slight feeling you're all sponsored by Warwick. Either that or you're all brainwashed.

potter3 Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 Hallam, but live closer to Uni of. Oh. Is Hallam good?
Unabomber Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 Oh. Is Hallam good? Yeah it's amazing, great fun and Sheffield is a great city to live in. Many many good bars pubs and clubs.
Flynny Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 My loan, grant and accomodation papers for Bristol have all just come through on the same day. It doesn't seem real.
James. Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 My loan, grant and accomodation papers for Bristol have all just come through on the same day. It doesn't seem real. From my experience of Bristol (I have a good group of friends living out there) I reckon it'll be a fantastic place for a student. There's a real community feel to it, whenever I go out there my mates constantly bump into people they know. Really good music scene as well. As you'll probably know Portishead, Massive Attack, Roni Size and loads others come from there. You'll find loads of cool little nights being put on. Great place to go university. Be prepared to be branded a northerner though. Much of the population of Cornwall, Devon and Somerset end up there.

I'd probably quite like to be regarded as an uncouth northerner. I'd much rather have gone north if Bristol wasn't so damned charming. Is it as expensive as people have mentioned or just relatively very slightly more pricey?
Katy Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 My loan, grant and accomodation papers for Bristol have all just come through on the same day. It doesn't seem real. I know what you mean. I had my reading list through today and it's extensive to say the least and that is only for the first year!
AoWW Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 I know what you mean. I had my reading list through today and it's extensive to say the least and that is only for the first year! Hmm, be a bit wary about buying too many books from the reading list. When I went back to Uni (to do my PGCE - realise it's a different type of course) I bought quite a lot of books (admittedly off e-Bay or second-hand from Amazon) only for them to say during the first week that most of the books weren't necessary, before suggesting a few 'key' texts. It serves as a word of warning to anyone starting a new course, tbh. I know much of the time you're keen to get ahead, get sorted beforehand, etc, etc, but a little restraint on the book-buying front is probably wise.

We had a massive reading list sent to us before we even started and then the lecturers told us the one key text to buy in the first lectures. Best plan as well is to try and find someone to sell them onto at the end of the year because at £40 a book, it seems a waste to just put them on a shelf to gather dust after you're done with them.
The People's Hero Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 Don't buy any books, just get them from the library or not at all. Don't do any work either. I guarantee you'll still get a 2:1.

I sold all my textbooks on Amazon when I'd finished and made a fortune(ish!). If you're going to sell you're books try and do it at the time most universities send out their reading lists - you'll catch all those mega-keen people.
Katy Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 What are you doing and where? Lincoln uni and I'm doing a degree in Health and Social care. What are you doing? Don't worry I'm not planning on buying any books until I really have to, this is actually my second venture into Uni so am a bit more laid back about it than last time although I'm not going to have a baby and finish it this time. I have already added all the books listed on the sheet to my wish list on Amazon and will monitor the new and used prices on there. I think the only one I may definitely need is the study skills one but we'll see. I'm skint at the moment anyway so I'm saving what money I do have for vodka and red bull.
The People's Hero Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 Katy, don't bother, just cruise through. Easy.

Back in student mode already.
Katy Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 Katy, don't bother, just cruise through.Easy. Jim, I'm technically not brainy enough to cruise through. I got shit GCSE results, didn't do A levels and just did Btecs. It's my life and work experience that has got me through. Unfortunately there are no placements on this course like Nursing so I can't blag my way through like I did before Back in student mode already. Haha I don't think I've ever got out of student mode to be honest

Still sounds like you're quite motivated - hopefully that will remain the case. What are you studying this time round and what's the course length?

I know it's my last chance so too right I'm motivated luckily it's a subject I'm quite experienced and knowledgeable in so I might be alright. I'm doing a BSc (Hons) in Health and Social care so it will be three years. Aggghhhh just over 3 weeks until I go, I've known since January that I was in and it's dragged but the last week or so it seems to have flown by.
