I went to Nene when it was Nene College. It's a college. Me, a bloke who wrote a book about his diary and the seminal Goth band Bauhaus all went to Nene College. Did Business and Marketing, me. Wish I'd done 'being in a goth band' as I'd probably not have to work anymore. Ever.

Rankings are pretty much what you make of them, does the course itself offer you what you want to take from it? Do you want to go to a small and familiar ex-college University or would you prefer a large, old school red-brick establishment with a bit of kudos to its name?

I remember when the whole Moulton Park campus was nothing but fields. It reminds me of Worcester Uni in the way the halls of residence are conveniently next to the student bar. Cosy.

I like Northampton, we may live there again one day.

I'm just sceptic of school/university rankings overall. I can't tell what the actual difference is between institutions (in terms of teaching quality and costs, mostly), but I know that Cambridge and Oxford have always been and will probably always be the two most famous universities in the world, setting a really high standard. But a high reputation can also be deceiving, since I believe that it's also what you make out of the course you're in. You can go to a well-known place and still end up unhappy or frustrated (but that's rather an issue with not really knowing what you want).

But as for my field of interest, there's not that many Universities left with a rather practical approach to filmmaking and I'd fancy a stay in the UK for several reasons. Ideally, it'd be a place close enough to go and see some Leicester matches on a rather regular basis. Warwick, Nottingham and Lincoln offer (theoretical) Film Studies, as are Leicester Uni and DeMontfort. Bedford is already a bit far off. Same goes Leeds Met and especially Bournemouth and Falmouth. Brum City focuses on Post Production.

I'd also prefer a "smaller" U with a familiar feel, because I've made the unfortunate mistake to study law at the University of Zurich and it was a disaster, as I could never really got used to the size of it (largest uni in Switzerland) and the anonymity was killing any group sense. Could never really relate to the course and needless to say, I quit after a while.

Northampton seems to be a nice place to study. :dunno:

Warwick FTW!!

My sister went there and I went to Coventry Poly (I think its called Uni now). I am very proud to say I am banned from Warwick Student Union. They really didn't like us Poly-Boys visiting. Add a Crazyhead gig and it was all too much for those precious Uni kids.

Its a good Uni. They have done lots of new / reconstruction work their recently.

Its just a f**ker to get to in the morning with all the traffic

Warwick is based in Coventry and it's a bit annoying getting to Leicester by public transport even though they're so close. I don't know anyone who did film studies there (I studied at Warwick), but I'll ask my girlfriend if any of her hall mates do it and what they think. Warwick is good though for the "smaller" Uni feel. It's Campus based, and all first years are guarenteed a place on Campus. Plus in your 2nd and 3rd years you can live in Leamington, which is quite a nice place, rather than Coventry. Because it's Campus based the Student Union isn't your typical 20p a pint place, but it's a lot bigger and a lot more happens there (including gigs). It's also getting totally rebuilt over the next year so should be exceptional. The library's also being revamped at the moment, and what they've done so far is pretty sweet.

That bit sounds like Lincoln Uni.

Good luck with it (A)Lexei anyway

Bedford is one of the biggest shitholes in the country. I hate Bedford.

So your choices seem to revolve around how easy it would be to get to see football? lol

The only downside to a three-year stint at a British University are the costs - as a EU member, I can study for the same fees as my UK counterparts, but three years add up to a nice total in the end - £9500+living expenses of another £15000. I'd rather cut this for two years and £6300 and £10000, respectively. After all, £8000 are £8000.

Btw, is the "study now - pay later!" thingy for UK students solely?

EDIT: Just noticed

To a certain extent, yes. lol I wouldn't want to be too far off Leicester, honestly. Imagine doing regular matchday trips coming down from Bournemouth. Or Leeds. :D But it also boils down to which uni offers the course I'm looking for - and there are only a few. Among them, Northampton. And money is another factor - can't afford to go to all these expensive Film Schools in the London area. The tuition fee alone is outrageous - American standard!

Go to Loughborough, its a good uni.

:D

Go to Loughborough!

Yeah but guys, if Loughborough doesn't offer the course he wants to do then there's no point

Yeah, if you like your course served with a side of sweaty sportsmen. We all know Warwick is better. I have Phube on my side, I'll get him to bore you to death with his Wii talk if you're not careful

BOOYAH

(I love your Wii talk really Phube)

Too right I will!! lol:P

Warwick is by far the best! Biggest Union in the country.

Oh and If you like films (obviously), The lecture theatre L3 (which doubles as the Student cinema) is one of only 5 cinemas in the Country which can play 70mm films... :o

I even watched Apocalype Now (Redux) 70mm...

You know you want it!

Probably the best Student Film society... in the world!

It's a lot cheaper than a normal cinema too!

Pffft. Who cares about the lads there when there are plenty of very attractive girls to distract you from your course / revision (not speaking from experience, clearly )?! A much better way to look at it, I think. :D

Though most of the lads there seem to be slightly on the overweight and greasy side, not sporty, funnily enough.

Reading campus is probably the best in the country. It has a lake and all sorts. It's practically like going on safari when you walk around the campus.

I can vouch for this, I go running there. It's lovely stuff. And they have an entire building dedicated to Soil Science. AN ENTIRE BUILDING!

lol Were you attacked whilst sunbathing... ?

I lived in Heronbank during my Postgrad. I like to sleep with a window open. EVERY SINGLE MORNING they'd start squawking at stupid o'clock. And walking to the Scarman Road Business School for lectures every day and having to dance around the colossal amount of shit they managed to produce. Wankers, the lot of them!
