SamL Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 Hang on a minute here.Didn't this guy take on Southampton with only a few games to go in the season? A bloke called Nigel Worthington did pretty much the same at the end of last season and managed a win percentage of 20%? Mmmmm, ...thought so. Perhaps we shouldn't read too much into this. After all, he did take on a difficult job, and his hands were tied somewhat as to what exactly he could achieve. 3 wins out of 14. In all fairness to him, it wasn't his squad and he took on a pretty difficult job but did what he had to do. Being a statistician, I don't think he sounds too promising.
Legend_in_blue Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 Not to mention the manner in which they played and the fact that the new(old) owners wanted him back in-situ. Would you be happy with his appointment? I'm of the opinion that options are severely limited, and that Pearson may well be a solid, although a little risky, appointment.
Milky Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 "As manager of Carlisle United, he helped to keep the club in the Football League at the end of the 1998–99 season. Pearson signed on-loan goalkeeper Jimmy Glass, who scored an injury-time goal against Plymouth Argyle, saving the club from relegation to the Football Conference at the expense of Scarborough" WOW WHAT A MANAGER!
iancognito Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 My biggest thing with that is that, if after all the searching and applications, he's picked someone with so little experience and none at this level, he'd have been better keeping Holloway. We've been rudderless for a month (well for about 5 years actually) and at the end of it we get Nigel Pearson If you want a flip side, Tony Mowbray - a similar character and player - got a similar reception at Hibs and got them into the top four and won an award or two there. What he's done at West Brom is well-known. Everyone has to start somewhere, let's hope that we're the first success story on Pearson managerial CV.
filbertway Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 I really hope its not Pearson. Win percentage or no win percentage bleurgh. I;'d rather have Rob "Smashing bunch of lads" Kelly back.
Daggers Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 Would you be happy with his appointment?I'm of the opinion that options are severely limited, and that Pearson may well be a solid, although a little risky, appointment. I'm happy with his appointment. I'm happy with any appointment. I just want to get this League 1 party started.
filbertway Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 Well before Roy Keane joined Sunderland, he had a 0% win ratio. Stats don't show everything.Pearson hasn't had ten years failed experience like others. Not my first choice, but would do. He also had never lost a game before? What's your point?
Lillehamring Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 of course the interesting thing to consider, is how the players will react to this, are they less likely to leave for example. also what is his policy on playing younger players?
RowlattsFox Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 3 wins out of 14.In all fairness to him, it wasn't his squad and he took on a pretty difficult job but did what he had to do. Being a statistician, I don't think he sounds too promising. You could look at it as 4 defeats in 14 as well, you can swing the stats whatever way you want. Think the stats in Pearson's case are pretty meaningless, this is a different situation to what he has done before.
filbertway Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 As long as Jamie "psycho" Treadwell is playing for Coalville town next season I will be happy.
Sparky Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 of course the interesting thing to consider, is how the players will react to this, are they less likely to leave for example. also what is his policy on playing younger players? Stearman and Mattock will have both trained under him whilst he was in charge/assistant of the under 21s i would think
Milky Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 He's got a Corner ratio of 17% mmm, not sure what to make of that Risky appointment on that maybe.
Lillehamring Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 Stearman and Mattock will have both trained under him whilst he was in charge/assistant of the under 21s i would think well, it's a start
RowlattsFox Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 He's got a Corner ratio of 17%mmm, not sure what to make of that Risky appointment on that maybe. I think we had the lowest amount of corners last season, I remember seeing that stat in the papaers most weeks
Fez of Mahrez Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 There appear to be around 30 Nigel Pearsons on Facebook. I think we should all add the guy with the hat.
fox123 Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 Is it me or, if he is appointed does this have BORING written all over it!?
Matt Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 Is it me or, if he is appointed does this have BORING written all over it!? One of the things that I fear about this appointment.
ohmy6od2 Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 Well well well that'l teach me won't it. It looks like Mr Mandaric has decided that he can not continue to deal with John Gregory any longer. I can assure you, that on THREE seperate occasions a deal was agreed with John Gregory, only for him to decide he wanted to think about it abit longer. So all eyes will be on the press conference tomorrow morning. 11am from what I know at the minute. This may change as things have changed very late in the day, will try and keep you posted. I apologise for my little rant on another thread, but I stand by what I posted. At that time a deal was agreed and a press conference had been scheduled for 2pm that afternoon. However John Gregory needed more time, and it looks like this has cost him the chance to be our manager.
Lillehamring Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 no so, do we know what sort of footy he favours, what was he like as a player, anyone know ote about him?
Sparky Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 Is it me or, if he is appointed does this have BORING written all over it!? It certainly is not something to get excited about but lets hope for the best and give the fella a chance

dave_the_fox Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 I just want a manager in I just wanna get this big league 1 rave-a-thon started !!!!!!!!!!!
fox123 Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 no Obviously I disagree, he hardly set the championship alight at Southampton!
Thracian Posted 19 June 2008 Posted 19 June 2008 ...and so the Wikipedia win-ratio stats come out.Whatever happened to actually watching football? My middle son's a Southampton fan and I doubt his opinion would pass the censors on here, despite the Saints staying up. But, just like Levein, Kelly, Allen, Megson and Holloway, we'll see. Later if not sooner. All and sundry would be quoting the stats if Pearson had a 75% win ratio which supported his appointment but seeing as he doesn't, on go the blinkers. Reading through his 10-year managerial/coaching record I don't get the impression of club's being desperate to hold onto him or of any great achievements it might be worth mentioning. Enlighten me by all means. But thus far I'm not impressed.
