Bert Posted 27 July 2008 Posted 27 July 2008 If you can be bothered, take 5 minutes or so to read these threads from the past. 2 of the players that have took a lot stick, sometimes justified, sometimes unjust. I find it very interesting that, with the space of 12 months, how people change, and how much hatred they now have for certain players. Clem Signs. Oakley Signs. Both players, i think are exceptional footballers, and given a chance, (god forbid) under a stable regime they will do well for us.
syston_fox Posted 27 July 2008 Posted 27 July 2008 I was over the moon when both signed and feel that Oakley will turn out to be a good player for us but for whatever reason, it just wasn't working for him last season. As for Clemence, I don't hate him and felt better with him in the team than out of it but he was so frustrating at times - he was either really good or really bad and there were too many games when he just didn't perform but to be fair the same could be said of near enough every player. I think the main reason that people get on the backs of these two (and Howard to some extent) is simply because we were all so excited when they signed and we heaped so much expectation on them tearing the championship up.

Hit the nail on the head mate I still reckon they'll turn out good if they end up staying like ..
Bert Posted 27 July 2008 Author Posted 27 July 2008 Hit the nail on the head mate I still reckon they'll turn out good if they end up staying like .. He did indeed hot that nail. I also agree with you mate.
Corky Posted 27 July 2008 Posted 27 July 2008 He did indeed hot that nail. I also agree with you mate. My main problem with the two players is that I was delighted when we signed them, and they haven't lived up to my expectations. If they are included this season they will have my full support though.
Daggers Posted 27 July 2008 Posted 27 July 2008 Brilliant! I love it when old threads get dredged up. To be fair - most of the Clem thread has either sensible views (of either hue) or a bunch of spanners cocking off. It is in the Oakley thread where we all thought we'd finally found a solution to the club's problems. Oh how we were misguided - but it is so easy to wrap up your hope for success in an unknown package...are whole raft of us are doing it now: whether it be the 'young ones', the 'new ones' or 'the boss can re-invigorate the old guard', so many of our current threads revolve around those three focal points. On the other hand - looking at stuff like this really makes me upset over how positive I felt at the beginning of last season and my blinkered belief that we'd turn it around in January. God damn you Martin Allen! God damn you Ian Holloway! Grr. And, as ever, I bloody wish Barton Fox would return.
C-man Posted 27 July 2008 Posted 27 July 2008 I was delighted with both signings and although both have been very disappointing at times, I wouldn't mind either staying but I would only like one of them to play regularly. Don't think they could play together and I'd like to see Weso play a bigger part this season.

If they are included this season they will have my full support though. To be fair they signed with reputations from being key players in promotion seasons with Derby and Birmingham same with Howard .From what people had seen of them they looked quallity players but obviously not as is the case with alot of players here .

Don't think they could play together and I'd like to see Weso play a bigger part this season. I'm happy for them to stay - but I'd not shed a tear if either left. Out of the pair I feel Clemence has been the most disappointing but that is simply because I held greater hopes for him. That said, when Clem has played well and been liberated to push forward he has been outstanding (albeit infrequently) in a manner that Oakley simply hasn't. Neither has impressed my with any captaincy credentials.
Stevosevic Posted 27 July 2008 Posted 27 July 2008 Alot of bum love for Allen in that thread as well... Even thought he acted like a prat.
Thracian Posted 27 July 2008 Posted 27 July 2008 With the added passing options that wingers give I'd not be surprised if Oakley, Clemence, Fryatt, Weso and Campbell all found it easier to play well for City this season. I certain don't "hate" Oakley and Clemence, I've just never seen why they shouldn't have to justify their place like everyone else which has too often not been the case so far. But I'm not blind to the extenuating circumstances at Leicester in the recent past which made it so hard for any footballer to flourish. Who but the brilliant could shine in a team with so many dead spots and so little pace? This season our central midfielders will have passing options all around them and my main concern is whether the likes of Clemence and Oakley remain good enough to compliment their new colleagues and whether they have the drive to provide sustained backing to what ought to be a much faster attack and one with far more movement to go with their pace.
ASH17LCFC Posted 27 July 2008 Posted 27 July 2008 Clemence was the only signing this season i got excited about. Thought finally we've found a decent midfielder ... I was proved wrong.

I don't disagree with the jist of your post Bert, but I think you're playing it a little fast and loose with the word "exceptional" there.

You're right there. Maybe a bit of an ex-aggeration, let's say on their day, they are both quality footballers.
Flynny Posted 27 July 2008 Posted 27 July 2008 That said, when Clem has played well and been liberated to push forward he has been outstanding (albeit infrequently) in a manner that Oakley simply hasn't. Neither has impressed my with any captaincy credentials. Thats it pretty much exactly. When Clemence is playing badly, at least you know he's still there, unlike Oakley who just disappears altogether. Clemence was forever trying things, and when he played badly it was because they weren't coming off, not because he wasn't trying anything. In a team much less static than last season I'd expect him to come back strongly.
lcfc81 Posted 27 July 2008 Posted 27 July 2008 I am not sure about anyone else but in recent history I have been desperate for a signing to turn the club around I think sometimes we pin too much expectations on some of these signings and when they don't change our fortunes instantly we get on their backs. They then preform even worse and eventually we buy someone else. It then all starts again!! I think that we have some decent players, and given a bit of stability we might have a decent team. All the signs are there for a good season. I just hope its not the usual misplaced optimism (the type I get before every season or any international tournament). Come on you blues!!!!!
SamL Posted 28 July 2008 Posted 28 July 2008 I was excited when Oakley and Clemence signed but like many other players, they failed to live up to expectations. This meant they were a prime target for being made a scapegoat for our downfall. Lets face it, not many players actually had good seasons last season did they?
The People's Hero Posted 28 July 2008 Posted 28 July 2008 They are both good players. Something wasn't right at LCFC last year though. Remains to be seen whether that has been sorted for this season.
Ric Flair Posted 28 July 2008 Posted 28 July 2008 They are both good players. Something wasn't right at LCFC last year though. Remains to be seen whether that has been sorted for this season. A very valid point, and in recent years, being talented hasn't made much difference at Leicester. All players struggled to make any sort of impact and were given dogs abuse because of it, some warranted, perhaps some not. I hold my hands up to dishing some of that out, probably unfairly. Fact is, if we do now have the basis of a decent managerial set up, as long as the likes of Clemence and Oakley have the right attitude to want to be at Leicester then their ability should shine through, and that can only be a good thing for us poor fans!
Ric Flair Posted 28 July 2008 Posted 28 July 2008 I was delighted with both signings. I had the proverbial internet wank when both signed.
