Virginia Blue Posted 17 January 2009 Posted 17 January 2009 I've just read an article on "Bluekipper" on our Everton FC webpage on the tribute garden set-up in Leicester. Mr. Murphy tragically died enroute to the Everton vs. Leicester match in March of 2004. I didn't know Bernard and did not attend the match but I must say how good it is to hear of a football club and its fans who have done something to honor a fellow fan regardless of what team he supports. Too often football fans make the news for the wrong reasons but it says a lot about the fans of Leicester City FC and the work that went into this tribute. I have always had a few teams over the years that I've wished well for some silly reason (Tranmere, Blackpool, Exeter, and others) and I will surely add Leicester City FC to the list. Your support of your team is to be commended and I wish you the best of luck in your fight to get back to the Premiership were you belong. All the best from an Evertonian out in Virginia USA!!!

Welcome ...I remember this and was at the game, i was quite young at the time and can vaguelly remember watching something about this on Central News. Tragic death. R.I.P Bernard.
Rocky Dennis Posted 18 January 2009 Posted 18 January 2009 I remeber this too, so tragic. This club has had plenty of criticism over the years but should rightly be commended for this. Anyone remember when we had Liverpool at home later that season and their fans unveiled a huge Everton Flag in honour of Bernard? Im sure I didnt imagine this....

Hi and Welcome, Thanks for your best wishes I think it's only fair to say, although I'm sure all of us on here share their sentiments all the work put in by LCFC fans on this came from here: http://fansonline.net/leicestercity/mb/view.php?id=92343. Best of luck to Everton in their attempt to break into the top four - maybe next season now.
Candidcamera Posted 18 January 2009 Posted 18 January 2009 Good post - Bentleys Roofers - credit due.
Stig the Lawnmower Posted 18 January 2009 Posted 18 January 2009 I remember it well. He was hit by an advertising hoarding, or similar, on the upperton road bridge that had been blown by strong winds. it happened just before I walked past, he was being attended to by a fellow supporter before the ambulance arrived. Didn't realise it was so serious at the time. Bad day.

The next opponents at home were Liverpool and we had a minutes silence, which they respected well, for him. But there was no flag
CosbehFox Posted 18 January 2009 Posted 18 January 2009 There was a banner tho carried by Liverpool fans. It got me thinking with new alterations near Upperton Road whether they took the plaque of remeberance off the bridge. Anyways, the bench appears a worthy replacement.
Phube Posted 18 January 2009 Posted 18 January 2009 They didn't announce it until we'd left the ground... can't even remember the score everyone just kinda shuffled numbly back home... such a tragic accident...
Libertine Posted 18 January 2009 Posted 18 January 2009 They didn't announce it until we'd left the ground... can't even remember the score everyone just kinda shuffled numbly back home... such a tragic accident... 1-1 I think. Marcus Bent equalised in the last minute.
Jimmy Posted 18 January 2009 Posted 18 January 2009 The next opponents at home were Liverpool and we had a minutes silence, which they respected well, for him. But there was no flag they may have a massive rivalry but Liverpool and Everton fans have a lot of respect for each other when the worst happens as shown by the tribute to Rhys Jones at anfield
DB11 Posted 18 January 2009 Posted 18 January 2009 1-1 I think. Marcus Bent equalised in the last minute. Yes. A header from a corner in front of the Kop. The corner was taken from the left hand side of the goal (looking at it from the Kop) and I was well happy Ben Thatacher also crunched Wayne Rooney  :w00t:
Craig Posted 18 January 2009 Posted 18 January 2009 1-1 I think. Marcus Bent equalised in the last minute. Yeah, i remember the stadium was rocking at the end, literally. Then the news came over the PA system and suddenly football didn't really matter.

The plague is on the bench I believe if not it's in the memorial area, the guys on the Bentleys site organised it with the Club

DB11 Posted 18 January 2009 Posted 18 January 2009 The plague is on the bench I believe if not it's in the memorial area, the guys on the Bentleys site organised it with the Club Plague? I'm not going near that bench...
Rich Fox Posted 18 January 2009 Posted 18 January 2009 Yes I remember this and Bernard will not be forgotten, Leicester are a good friendly club and we will never forget what happened it was so sad.
Finnegan Posted 18 January 2009 Posted 18 January 2009 Welcome to the forum and I'm sure the sentiment will be appreciated all round. You're not the only ex-pat Virginian on here, either!
broughtonblue Posted 9 August 2014 Posted 9 August 2014 So 10 years on, wondering if the club will do anything on Saturday to show their respect for this tragic accident. I think they send flowers every year to his immediate family but a gesture would be nice. If the club don't perhaps us fans could do something? Edit: quite a few old threads on here regarding this, just put Bernard Murphy into the search function
broughtonblue Posted 9 August 2014 Posted 9 August 2014 Just revived this post from another thread, will have to hold him to it! Everton Blue 30 Apr 2005 Hi guys. I’ve been an Everton supporter for many years and I’ve registered here to place a single post. Not much in football surprises me any more, but the response of Leicester City Football Club and its supporters to the sad death of Bernard Murphy has been astonishing. I know many Evertonians will join me in saying a heartfelt thanks to everybody connected with L.C.F.C. – not least, you guys, the genuine supporters, who have proved that football really is the people’s game. When your team is back where they belong in the Premiership, make sure you turn up at Goodison Park for your away game – there’s 37,000 of us waiting to buy you a drink…
Babylon Posted 9 August 2014 Posted 9 August 2014 Been to Goodison before, definitely going again if I get a free beer :-)
StanSP Posted 9 August 2014 Posted 9 August 2014 Hope something is done. And I hope that the personnel at the club is aware of what happened so it's not too late if they're only finding out now.
