Xiaomi are very good for what you want. I have the Mi 10 and it's the best phone I've ever had. 90hz AMOLED screen with HDR, 5G, brilliant battery life, 4K/8K video, great 108MP camera. And I bought a lovely looking 55W wireless charger from China which charges it in less than an hour.

Under £300 on Amazon.

EE have a fantastic deal for S23 atm.  Shame I just can't justify it.

I've always found EE to be quite good, from long term customer discounts to great upgrade prices (after calling).

I've always been on contract and the other half has had my phone when I've upgraded. Wasn't due an upgrade til july this year but she broke her phone and to buy one similar outright was still silly money. So I called EE, saying I want to upgrade early (pay off old contract) but the prices were bad. Told them a price I'd seen elsewhere and asked them to match it. They did and bettered my current contract. Now have more data and pay considerably less a month than before, plus I claimed the free chromebook they were offering. Missus payed off my remaining contract as it was a lot cheaper than buying that phone outright, even in used state. So I get a new phone (s22), she gets a great phone (s20) cheaper than anyone else, and I'm paying less to get more with a free chomebook I can now sell. Having used said chromebook I absolutely don't see the point in them, it seems a complete waste of time, but I'll have it for free.

Nobody has posted here since February?

With Black Friday fast approaching I'm eyeing up a replacement for my 3 year old Xiaomi. To get 3 years out of a £250 phone seems pretty good to me and I'm only looking to replace it as the battery is starting to get a bit tired (it's probably 2 years old as the first one went haywire and was replaced under warranty).

As the Chinese secret service have hardly tried to blackmail me AT ALL, I'd consider another Xiaomi or one of their offshoots.

I'd also be prepared to pay a bit more - my wife has got a Samsung A54 which is very good but I'm not enthusiastic about because I'm a luddite and would rather have a phone with a headphone jack.

Any ideas? There's a 'rugged' Nokia that has some appeal (and a headphone socket) but seems a bit expensive given the specs

Wow it's like I've posted in some kind of Black Mirror version of FT.

Exactly the same situation as you. Mines coming up to 3 years old in Feb. It's a Xiaomi Mi 10 5G phone where the battery is starting to drop like a stone when it goes below 30% and dies soon after 15%. It doesn't get that low very often but if I'm out and about and it does I have to find a charger sharpish.

I haven't looked around yet but always use www.gsmarena.com as you get comprehensive reviews and full specs there.

I did look at replacement batteries which are only £20-25 on Amazon with the toolkit, and there's plenty of videos on how to do it on YouTube. Might be a cheaper option unless you just fancy a different phone.

Having forked out the equivalent of £17 a month over the three years including the cost of the SIM I think I'll stretch to a new one! Also want to keep the current one as a spare, as there's still a bit of life left in it

The 13T looks good but it's a range or two above what I want - upper midrange/lower flagship territory where I think pretty much all phones have done away with the jack.

The Redmi Note 12 Pro Plus seems to be about the best phone you can get with a jack on it, but although there's a bit of money off it at the minute I'm wondering whether it might get a bit cheaper come Black Friday proper as it's still a bit more than I want to spend ideally

I've seen reviews, they look crazy but pretty cool.  What have you needed to get used to?

Nothing huge, and I'm dreadful at dealing with change, but the layout is different. The main thing is that after all the system updates, you're offered the new layout or stick to what you have. This decision is not something you can reverse!

Well you're not alone there.

I think it's probably a good idea to accept a bit of something different every now and then just to keep the old brain cells ticking over. I don't want to be like my old folks who's world is turned upside down whenever there's a Windows update on their laptop.

The Redmi Note 12 Pro Plus is looking favourite for me at the minute. It was a bit overpriced when it came out but is already down to £350 on Amazon and that's before their Black Friday has started. They normally do pretty heavy discounts on Xiaomi stuff so I reckon I could get that for 300ish.

120w charging! Bonkers

Well I'm not sure what happened there, but they cut the price to £319 in the Black Friday sale, which I was happy with (no deal on Amazon yet), then when I tried to apply all the discount codes at checkout that were supposedly on offer, I somehow got it down to £254.

There must be a Chinese secret agent that REALLY thinks I'm a cool guy!!!

I got myself an absolute deal on a Galaxy Z Fold 5 a couple of weeks ago.

Paying less than I was for my Galaxy 22, got more data, upgraded for free over 6 months early.

They gave me £250 up front contribution.

Also got a load of free add ons, claimed from Samsung that'll be here before Xmas, worth about £300

And the phone is fvcking incredible.

Hear me out in this...

Get divorced, have whatever phone case you like.

Get remarried.

The friend who bought you a wedding Tunnocks gift set will do the same again.

To be honest, I don't see any downside whatsoever.

Does she buy what she wants? If so, bin her off or just buy it. Be a man.

Pornhub.com will have you sorted on that sofa for the next week.

Ultimately she's just trying to protect me from myself, one of the things that make her a good wife (other things include excellent roast potatoes and being a confident driver).

So I go off and marry my friend that bought me the Tunnocks? The solution has been staring me in the face* all along!

*metaphorically, she lives in Glasgow so this would be impractical

I mean, just look at it. A fourteen year loving relationship is one thing, but this is quite another:

Not just a wolf, but a wolf dreamcatcher.

What do you mean you're taking my wife's side now??
