ozleicester Posted 22 May 2009 Posted 22 May 2009 Gday folks, after nearly 40 years in exile, I am considering a return "home". Now most of the family no longer exists in the UK and it would just be the 2 of us...so, where should i be looking to live? keep in mind the aussie $ versus the almighty pound sterling I guess the first question is...where should i definitly rule out...where am i going to be stabbed raped shot or killed. This is a relatively serious question...though to be honest ive posted it here..so, i dont expect all the answers to be entirley useful. maybe if just a few are that would be great. edit: Oh and whats with this 50% shared ownership business?
Super Arj Posted 22 May 2009 Posted 22 May 2009 in terms of stabling your finances, I obviously wouldn't suggest you move straight to London, to be quite honest, i think places like Nottingham, and certain parts of manchester should be avioded, for your own safety.. however in saying that, its all about your own precaution, (eg, no matter where you are, walking through a dark alleyway at night is never a good idea ) This may sound bias, but i think Leicester is a really great place, one open to development, and rich in culture. The cost of living here isn't too high in comparison with other cities, however crime rates are rising (but name me a city where it isn't) hope it helps
Monk Posted 22 May 2009 Posted 22 May 2009 No idea what the 50% ownership thing is that you mention. Move to Scotland. England is finished. If William Wallace was alive today he'd walk all over us.
ozleicester Posted 22 May 2009 Author Posted 22 May 2009 Thanks Super...exactly the info im hoping to find out..(esp the nottingham etc)..the London pricing is prob out of my range and anyway im looking at being around Leicester...so are there good bad bits around there? edit spell
ozleicester Posted 22 May 2009 Author Posted 22 May 2009 thanks Monk...but ..convincing the missus that it aint that cold in Leicester is one thing...completley bulshitting about the weather in Scot is another thing altogether..not to mention..the scots
davieG Posted 22 May 2009 Posted 22 May 2009 Depends on whether you want to live within the City or in the County, House or Apartment If it's in the City, the West End, Knighton, Stonygate are fairly decent areas there's also lots of new empty apartments in the centre itself. As for the County there's plenty of decent Hamlets if you want a Market Town type place then Market Harboro' is good. If you want access to the Motorways /Commuter routes there's places like Rothley on the A46/M1/M69 stretch. Where ever you pick, it'll be like buying a car someone will have something bad to say about it.
ozleicester Posted 22 May 2009 Author Posted 22 May 2009 Brilliant, thanks Davie G, reasonable flexible on where, we currently live in an apartment in the city..so that fine..but a nice little vilage soundds nice to I am looking on findaproperty.com is that the leading real estate website over there? Also over here we have "first Home owner grants" etc, anything like that that i can take advantage of (bloody immigrants)

If you're going to be working in the City commuting is a nightmare. I think we were voted one of the worst / slowest in the country with traffic lights seemingly every 500 yards findaproperty is the Leicester Mercury site, they have a 'pullout' once a week with all the Agents and their houses for sale in it. I know nothing about mortgages as my redundancy helped me pay mine off
Sir Fynwy Posted 22 May 2009 Posted 22 May 2009 Unless there's no work there I'd just stay put, the UK is a mess and isn't going to get much better anytime soon. I was offered jobs in Sydney and Melbourne yesterday and would be there like a shot if LCFC would move along with me,
Wycombe Fox Posted 22 May 2009 Posted 22 May 2009 Come to the Isle of Wight! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isle_of_Wight Warmer climate, hardly any frost, snowed once in 9 years, different types of beaches to suit your mood, amazing scenery, safer nightlife, kids can play outside safely etc The only downsides are distance from The Walkers and the job market isn't exactly bouyant (but then where is?).
Alexikokopops Posted 22 May 2009 Posted 22 May 2009 Move to rural Lincolnshire and live a relaxed lifestyle.
Matt Posted 22 May 2009 Posted 22 May 2009 Question - Why come and live back in this shithole of a country? Places to rule out? The whole island? Although as I said in my Working Holiday/Travelling thread I suppose it's a case of 'The grass is always greener on the other side', No matter where you live after a while it would get annoying, something would go wrong and would be as perfect as you thought from just visiting the places in the past.

Webbo Posted 22 May 2009 Posted 22 May 2009 If your want to study property prices this is a good place to start. As for the share equity schemes you mentioned, you need to contact a housing association. You can buy any percentage you can afford within reason I think. You have to pay rent on the part you don't own though. I don't know whether it's available to non-residents though.

New houses going up in Harborough all the time, but no one to buy them what with the economic downturn an' all.

Jon the Hat Posted 22 May 2009 Posted 22 May 2009 You spent 40 years in Adelaide and Perth and you want to come back to UK? Don;t. Seriously. It is not the same place you left.
Babylon Posted 22 May 2009 Posted 22 May 2009 Don't buy... just rent for a few months because you'll want to do a runner back to Oz.
Zingari Posted 22 May 2009 Posted 22 May 2009 You spent 40 years in Adelaide and Perth and you want to come back to UK? Don;t. Seriously. It is not the same place you left. you seem to be implying that the UK was a lot better 40 years ago , in what ways ?
