United v Barca

Interesting thought. I think personally his biggest mistake was believing that his midfield three were strong enough to cope with Xavi and Iniesta. The reason Chelsea coped so well was because of Essien, Lampard and Ballack. Manchester United can't match that. Having said that, he's got to have confidence that his team are good enough to deal with that without adjusting. The bottom line is that Manchester United are significantly weakened if Ronaldo has no impact. Genuinely can't say the same of Barcelona with any of their front three because the real strength is their midfield.

In the pre-match press conference Fergie said Park would be involved, because leaving him out of last years squad was the hardest thing he's had to do in a long time.

Barca's weakest point tonight was their defence, everyone knew that. So why not have the same 3 man midfield that he thought could handle the best central midfield pairing in the world, but have a better, more lethal attacking option, who's work-rate is simply awesome, with Park on the bench?

Anyone else in the loaded dog tonight? Was packed, mental utd fans, i loved being one of the very few barca fans in there, great night.

Soar point was similar few genuines in there who Bert knew but mostly Asian retards in shirts and scarfs who have no idea about English football.

Celebrated the goals well enough but was in the vast minority and didn't fancy a full on hiding

Very good point there.

It amazes me how Barcelona's weakest part was allowed to become one of their strongest tonight. It was all wrong. I am not one to question Sir Alex though, I am just a nobody compared to that guy.

As has been said, think Fergie made the mistake of getting nostalgic with team selection in the case of Park, and perhaps O'Shea. Neither did too much wrong, but it would have created a different shape to their team if they had been left out.

Barca were far and away deserved winners and the way they kept the ball at times was brilliant.

Messi's balance from his low centre of gravity gives him so so much and I have never seen two midfield ball players as good as Xavi and Iniesta - two playmakers in one midfield and my goodness it works.

Xavi and Iniesta were outstanding for Barca tonight, as impressive as they were last summer for Spain at Euro 2008.

In contrast, United, apart from the first 10 minutes, never showed up. Not one of their 14 players on the field tonight can be satisfied with their performance. It looked like a game too far for them.

Credit to Barca, though. Despite the absence of Dani Alves, Abidal and Marquez, they saw the chance of making history tonight and they took it. None of the great Real Madrid sides of the past ever won a Spanish treble. This team has, and can now be considered as a contender for the best Spanish club side of all time.

I can imagine the parties in Catalonia going on for days!

Felt sorry for my mate really, because like Tom said, he's proper United fan - Watched United in Europe when they played Roma and got battered by the Police, other away games, and season tickets, sadly, having to go on his own, the cost started to take it's toll. This one guy in front of us near the end, had his scarf, and even in the 88th minute, kept saying "believe, remember 99"

Very good point there.

Pretty much what i said too.

Outclassed and outplayed. Simple as.

United were a no show in midfield. Without Flethcher in the centre they seemed relunctant to make a tackle and against such players as Xavi and Iniesta that is absolutely criminal. They were allowed the space to pass in their desired triangles and throughout the match they made United look like a pub team.

It wasn't until Scholes was finally introduced that United looked like they had any urgency. Carrick couldn't seem to pass to save his life and Park may as well have had his eyes closed for the entire match as it was like watching Iain Hume run around for no reason.

I think Fergie's heart got the better of him with his team selection. The midfield was all wrong. Park, Giggs and Anderson were never going to dominate anything. The likes of Scholes, Rooney and Ronaldo were nullified by Fergie's approach.

Rooney had nothing all match, it seemed clear to me that Ronaldo would have done more of a job against Puyol and Slyvinho's lack of pace. Rooney would have been better served dropping into the whole where the inexperience of Barca would have been exposed.

I was shocked to see a Manchester United team outplayed like that.

And to top it all off, I lose a pound because Rustu the **** had a one year, 4 game spell with those Spanish bastards to interrupt a perfectly decent time at Fenerbahce.

Oh you knows it Benjamin.

ABIDAL IS SHITE

Abidal's a hero. That win was for him.

He can barely see anyway.:ph34r:

Some good points raised there though Simon, pretty much similar to mine.

Carrick was poor tonight. What makes him the player he is, let him down the most tonight.

hahaha oh bert, casual racism at its best.

Don't expect to see Carrick in an England shirt any time soon.

It'll be interesting to see who Ferguson picks in midfield next season, if/when Owen Hargreaves is fit again.

Hope I've not offended anyone by that actually.

Perfect end to a perfect season.

Newcastle relegated, Leeds ****ing up in the play-offs, my beloved Leicester City marching to the league title and now this. Amazing.

I really hate Manchester United, always have done. Arrogant fans, arrogant manager, no class. At the moment they are a big squad of hard-working players with an average midfield in world-class terms. So sweet to see the likes of Anderson and Carrick get absolutely schooled by genuine all-time world-class footballers. KNOW. YOUR. PLACE. Manchester United have a big squad capable of seeing through the vast majority of the smaller games but they've been completely done at home by Liverpool and now by Barcelona.

Have seen virtually every Barcelona game this season and they've been an absolute joy to watch, with none of the arrogance attached to the likes of Ronaldo. They genuinely just want to play beautiful football and score goals. 157 now in all competitions this season? Breathtaking.

Vidic too good for the Barca attack? Messi no good in the air? Love it.

Fantastic night for football.

:D

Agree with everything in bold.

United being systematically destroyed and being taught a footballing lesson is something I'll saviour for a long time. At least this defeat will stop a few more glory hunting 8 year olds from jumping on the Yanited bandwagon. And thank God that they didn't win back to back titles - we would never have heard the end of it by their arrogant fans.

Fergie made big mistakes with his team selection, but even still Barca weren't at full strength yet they battered United in every department. Xavi and Iniesta put on a masterclass show tonight and even though Messi wasn't as spectacular as some people hoped, he still had a massive impact on the game. Messi's touch and control and movement caused United all sorts of problems, and his goal was a textbook header. Barca deserve massive credit - they played United off the park and showed how football should be played.

People complaining about the quality of the match really ought to appreciate the tactical and technical side of the game - it wasn't end to end with goals galore but it was as perfect a footballing performance as you're likely to ever see in a final. Barca destroyed United and made them look like schoolboys - something you'll never see watching the Premiership.

Barca were the better side and fully deserved to win, but to say Man Utd were taught a footballing lesson is really unfair. That wasn't the case at all.

From ye ol' Twitter:

"alandavies1: Job vacancy for a welder to put a roof back on a double decker bus. Apply at Old Trafford."

Carrick's best at doing the simple things well, and he couldn't even do that tonight. He'll never be a regular for England when there are three, in my opinion, better central midfielders ahead of him. I still think he's a little overrated by some in terms of his overall abilities.

Very true.

I remember in the semi's people moaning about the tactics that Chelsea used. Some people fail to realise there's an art to defending, and many other aspects of the game too.

As brought up before, if there's an effective way to stop something or cure it, it's going to be used, and not ignored due it it not being the right way.
