United v Barca

Barca were the better side and fully deserved to win, but to say Man Utd were taught a footballing lesson is really unfair. That wasn't the case at all.

Not in that they got absolutely battered, but they were under pressure every time Barcelona had the ball and never looked like having the slightest chance of winning after they went behind, and on the ball they were so completely uninspired by comparison. It wasn't like Premiership vs. non league, but certainly top4 vs. Newcastle.

Oh, and as much as I'd like to join the deserved love-in on Barca's midfield, the best man on the pitch tonight was the ref - got everything spot on, in my eyes.

Just need to hope that Ronaldo comes out of Yaya Toures pocket in time to sign for Madrid and fook off out of England before August now.

United were under pressure every time they had the ball too. High up the pitch there was always someone closing down the defenders, and as United progressed down the field of play, it was then two players putting pressure on, in the last 30 yards of the pitch, Barca had 3 players around the man in possession. Everything about the way Barca went about their business tonight was excellent.

Ugly bugger, mind.

I think I would take looking like that and being that good though. May just beat my beauty.

At least this defeat will stop a few more glory hunting 8 year olds from jumping on the Yanited bandwagon.

They'll just jump on the Barca one instead. I don't see why that's any better.

It deters folk from following their local teams in places like Leicester.

Did anyone hear Tony Gale say that if Barca could nab Carrick then they would have the perfect midfield?

lol

Anyway yeah, Man u were totally outclassed. The fact they didnt put any pressure on Xavi and Iniesta when they got the ball is suicidal. They never EVER put a hard tackle into Xavi or Iniesta to let them know they are their. I mean, if you look back to the Chelsea and Barcelona match, Chelsea didnt take any crap and got right in their faces at the nou camp and Barca couldnt score. If man u did that, and were on their game and were able to counter attack more they could of won. But yeah, this was a total different Man u performance we normally see. Kinda glad they didnt win it though. :)

If Ronaldo got a crack at Sylvinho, He'd of been running rings round him

Iniesta.. One of the best midfielders for sure

Yes, here in Voj we were cheering for Barca. We have this cruel joke about English players: they come in two boxes. The ones in box A want to run with the ball up a very dark blind alley, the ones in box B want to kick the ball into outer space.

English players do not want to 'share' the ball with their team mates, they only give it to them when there is absolutely nothing else they can do with it. Because an English player knows he will not be willingly given the ball by his team mates he stands as far away from them as he possibly can hoping that he can stop one of the launches intended for the earth's outer atmosphere.

Continental players on the other hand have a (Catholic) guilt complex about the ball - they believe it is a sin to have it so as soon as they receive it they give it back first time. So, in order to stop a team mate feeling guilty a colleague will always be close by to help relieve him of his burden. As all this happens in the blink of an eye the opposition must remain a passive congregation at this strange religious ritual.

One touch play, first time passing, that was what undid Manchester United today (and undoes your national team ALL THE TIME). And they were completely blind to it. Sir Alex Ferguson thought they could win with their predictable 'Monty Python' tactic ('knees bent runing about advancing behaviour' - The Holy Grail) and I doubt he really understands why it failed.

So I can hardly blame you lot for not mentioning the one touch game either (and no, 'bossing the midfield', 'short passing' and 'push and go' are not the same thing).

Best team won. I don't think anyone can now argue that utd are better than Barcelona. Barca just destroyed them! Utd couldn't handle the Barca attacking 5 who must be one of the best front 5's the world has ever seen.

The game also answered the question of who is the best player in the world. Ronaldo was pretty much non-existent. Messi was 100 times better and more influential. Ronaldo isn't even in the top 2 players in the world now in my opinion, Iniesta was magnificent as well. I think Iniesta is Messi's only equal in world football at the moment.

Haven't read any of the thread so I might just be repeating others here.

Firstly, congratulations to FC Barcelona. They were terrific. After the first 10 minutes before the goal, they looked nervous and really quite shy. But once Van der Sar and Vidic had combined to make Eto'o look like the best finisher in the world, they were simply amazing.

I was stunned at the way they held the ball for minutes at a time, with Messi dropping into midfield, which gave United all sorts of problems all night, and the way that they made United chase shadows all night. There persistence with keeping the ball for long periods meant that when United actually won the ball, they hurriedly misplaced passes with what can only be excused by lack of concentration.

Xavi and Iniesta were a credit to Spanish football. They kept the game simple, moved it quickly when it needed to be, and slowed the game down when they needed to. They were also immense at winning the ball back quickly, along with Busquets.

Messi, after a very slow start to the game, eventually found his feet against English opposition and showed the whole of Europe why people consider him to be better than Ronaldo. Of course, its hard to judge over 90 minutes who is the better player, but it was clear to see who didn't care about the 'best player in the world' tag last night, and it wasn't the Portuguese winger. I got the feeling Ronaldo tried to do everything himself; countless times he failed to play in Rooney or Park, deciding to go on his own, where in comparison, the diminutive Argentinian didn't try anything special, if nothing was on he'd simply give the ball to Xavi, Iniesta, Henry or Eto'o and work space again. He was a delight to watch.

As for the 'Mancs' I was watching the game with. I have never met such whining little bitches in my life. Groaning here, there and everywhere. For god sake, its the European Cup Final, no matter who you're playing it's going to be tough.

And finally, the referee was absolutely outstanding.

Kids might get their parents to buy a Barca shirt but they're not going to support them as their main team over any English team. They're still going to pick an English team to support

The more I think about the result the happier I get. Whoever it was that said Utd are all about the big squad of good players rather than the world class had it right.

Messi scored but wasn't great
Going back to Barca, disappointed with Messi. Fantastic header, brilliant, but his overall play wasnt great. I thought Iniesta was probably Barcas best player.

Iniesta was fantastic, but Messi was right up there. Man U never found a way to stop him (without fouling him) and he was the only player who was always a threat. He was everywhere, always available, finding his teammates and running rings around the Man U players. Can't see what wasn't great about his performance.

As Finners said though, I've seen him perform even better, but take nothing away from his performance yesterday. Messi > Ronaldo, Barca > Man U

I agree with all of that, especially about the referee. It's often said that if you don't notice the ref, he's done well and that was most definitely the case last night.

For sure Iniesta and Xavi were the key to victory but Messi played well last night, some of his off the ball movement is amazing at times and he started to find his feet as the game went on.

I think it is something like 9 goals from 14 shots on target for Messi in this season's CL. Which is incredible.

Some of the articles I have read and the interviews I have listened to has warmed me a lot more to United, I like them anyway but even more so now in a strange way. There is no doubt that these two are the best two in the world and as fans we should be glad that we can witness some wonderful footballing talent. Whoever is your cup of tea, Ronaldo or Messi, Iniesta or Rooney, they are all fantastic footballers, all players we would pay to watch and all players who entertain us.

Wouldn't be surprised if they met again this time next year.

Surely Messi for WPOTY now??

Performed on the biggest occasions now and helped his team to win the treble for the first time ever.

I think he deserves it more than any other player right now.

I don't like how that always goes to forwards (with the exception of Cannavaro and Lothar Matthäus). I'd say Iniesta and Xavi have been more important than Messi for Barcelona this season. Anyway, we've still got over 7 months until they pick a winner!
