Milky Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 Agreed. It would be good for Britain if we had a tennis player who won tournaments, and Murray is by far and away the best hope of doing that. If Murray won the US open half the country probably wouldn't even know about it. Annoyingly people seem to think tennis is just wimbledon.
StanSP Posted 4 July 2009 Author Posted 4 July 2009 Raining at SW19. Could have first ever final under a roof.
dandannieldanok Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 If Murray won the US open half the country probably wouldn't even know about it. Annoyingly people seem to think tennis is just wimbledon. The BBC are partly to blame, the way they eulogise Wimbledon and constantly say how it is more prestigious than the other majors.
BoneDog Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 More than half the country wouldn't know about it. And that's cos they don't give a sh*t ! It's tennis. Not many people actually like tennis. Probably 10% or something like that.
Jimmy Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 The BBC are partly to blame, the way they eulogise Wimbledon and constantly say how it is more prestigious than the other majors. to be fair to the BBC most of the players say that too, as its the only Grass tournament a lot of them will play, the US and Aussie opens are hard courts and French is on Clay, which a lot of them played on growing up, so Wimbledon (with all its traditions, including having to wear all white) is something special to them. some of the most iconic tennis matches in history occurred at Wimbledon
BoneDog Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 You are. Well everytime I see him he acts like that. Not just now and then, but almost everytime he misses a shot or hits one out. You don't see other players acting like that. Maybe once in a while but hardly. It's constant with Murray
Joe. Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 Serena wins the women's singles. Venus just fell apart in that second set, and looked demoralised from the time that she was broken until she finally lost. Credit to Serena though, the better player on the day. Brilliant serving throughout the whole match (and tournament by the looks of it).

Bert Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 I only thought about doing it after Sea the stars won, but I knew Serena was going to win, and really fancy Federer tomorrow, I wonder what I'd have got for that treble.

But once she and Venus met again in the final, I suspected it would be her turn to win this year, and so it proved.
Bert Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 If Murray won the US open half the country probably wouldn't even know about it. Annoyingly people seem to think tennis is just wimbledon. Tow weeks ago, some guy emailed Sky Sports news and said "The majority of people only pay attention to tennis for two weeks a year, that's one of the main reasons for the state of British tennis " Serena could well have lost the semi. But once she and Venus met again in the final, I suspected it would be her turn to win this year, and so it proved. Especially after the result was vice versa last year.
purpleronnie Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 Really enjoyed watching Wimbledon, even listening to Henman, but McEnroe was brilliant. Although some might not agree:- Tim Henman is so dull he makes Alan Shearer look like Prince. (Brian Reade 2009) Highlight for me was The Roddick v Hewitt match. (Despite the annoying Ausssie fans - soccer taking off over there has a lot to answer for). I hope the final is as good.

They follow all Australian Sportsmen/women and teams around the world, they've got the ashes to go too as well. It's not just football.

So do I, but I suspect Roddick won't have much left after his matches with Hewitt and Murray. I'll be pleasantly surprised if he takes a set off Federer.
Father Ted Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 what was Chico doing in the players box? He's a Zimonjic and Nestor fan GET IN! 2 SERBS ARE CHAMPIONS AT WIMBLEDON
BoneDog Posted 5 July 2009 Posted 5 July 2009 10%? 13 million watched the 4th round match for starters. You do the math. Ok 20% watched a fourth round match. Only cos it's Wimbledon. That's the only time they watch. Fact Not all of them are tennis fans. Only about 10% of country are tennis fans. I'm not havin a go at tennis fans just sayin that it isn't a massive sport. Sorry if anyones offended by that
Father Ted Posted 5 July 2009 Posted 5 July 2009 shame nobody gives a shit about Doubles The quality of tennis was outstanding.

Sorry if anyones offended by that This, For example, I was watching, I don't like tennis but there was nothing else on and abit of me wanted to see Murray under pressure, struggling, having his mardy and hopefully get knocked out. Let the abuse commence.
filbertway Posted 5 July 2009 Posted 5 July 2009 Roddick is the white version of Micah Richards! What an absolute beast. Murray needs to hit the steroids if he wants to compete with that.
Jimmy Posted 5 July 2009 Posted 5 July 2009 The quality of tennis was outstanding. I don't doubt that, but nobody actually cares about doubles tennis, is was said in commentary in 1 of the Jamie Murray matches (I think) that Wimbledon is the only Slam event that doesn't shunt the doubles to the outer courts, Doubles, as far as prestige goes, is a only a step above from the junior event. and before you say it, Laura Robson only got so much coverage because the state of women's tennis in Britain is shocking and she has a lot of potential, although Andy Murray aside I think the women have a higher average ranking, were it not for Henman and Rusedski and now Murray we'd never get anywhere near a quarter final let alone semis and finals. Roddick is the white version of Micah Richards! What an absolute beast. Murray needs to hit the steroids if he wants to compete with that. he holds a 6-3 record over Roddick
