Bert Posted 1 July 2009 Posted 1 July 2009 rubbish Murray nearly beat Fed at the US open final the other year perhaps the worst comeback, ever. Nearly isn't good enough and it never will be.
Flynny Posted 1 July 2009 Posted 1 July 2009 Both times Murray's lost to Federer he's had bad games. Sure playing the best player in the world (second now I guess) will do that to an extent, but we'll see. Murray is better right now than he's ever been, as well. Federer doesn't exactly lose focus just because it's not a grand-slam, either. Whilst the record doesn't mean Murray will win it's also silly just to dismiss it. In fact I've just found out that one of Murray's losses was 4 years ago when he was just starting out, so since he's actually been any good he's only lost in the final at the US. Once is not a pattern.

(Has to be odds on, surely) Fair play to Murray if he does win it, and if he does, there'll be no question that he'll have deserved it. He's come on leaps and bounds in under a year, partly down to a massive attitude change, I think. I can pretty much guarantee that if he does win it, the cynics will be out in force claiming that he only won it because Nadal didn't enter. Don't currently have a favourite male tennis player, so as long as we get a good final I'll be happy.
Jimmy Posted 1 July 2009 Posted 1 July 2009 my point was bert, Murray is a far better player and is much fitter then he was when he lost to Fed, who is about the same as he was then, if Fed is on top form he is almost unbeatable, but he'll have to be close to beat Murray (assuming he beats Roddick)
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 1 July 2009 Posted 1 July 2009 Aren't you all forgetting that Murray has to play Roddick yet to play either Fed or Hass. I'm confident they will play each other in the final but it's not a formality

I'm confident they will play each other in the final but it's not a formality I'd expect Murray to win but yeah you're right, Roddick's playing pretty well at the minute, better than he has for a while. Murray's very good at using pace generated by the other player though, so someone as one-dimensional as him is always going to struggle.
Jimmy Posted 1 July 2009 Posted 1 July 2009 Totally agree with that post mate, but I think Fed will still be the slight favourite if this final happens. as he should, Federer has more Slam titles (14) then the rest of the tour (including Nadal) combined (13)

Hewitt is no slouch when it comes to returning serve and Roddick still managed 20 aces in the first 2 sets. Also Roddick was playing the best i have ever seen him play and i have seen him plenty of times and rate him highly. Roddicks low grounds shots were unbeliably the way he picked them up and put it on the baseline time and time again with a kick to hewitts forehand side every time. But the 4 hour game may have had it's toll......only time will tell.
dandannieldanok Posted 2 July 2009 Posted 2 July 2009 I fear a bit for Murray against Roddick although I still think he'll ultimately win the match. We saw how Murray was taken aback by Wawrinka's raw power and Roddick's main weapons are his rocket serves and thumping forehands. Could be another epic 5 setter. In the other semi, I can't see past a straight sets win for Fed, he's looking supreme.
purpleronnie Posted 2 July 2009 Posted 2 July 2009 Aren't you all forgetting that Murray has to play Roddick yet to play either Fed or Hass. I know we always celebrate victories before we actually win, we'll never learn.
Uncle Albert Posted 2 July 2009 Posted 2 July 2009 I think it was McEnroe who said yesterday that Fed has made 21 consecutive Slam semi-finals! Now thats impressive. I think Murray will beat Roddick tomorrow, Roddick's five setter yesterday won't help him and Murray winning in an 1 hour 45 will be a big advantage. Murray has got just a good a return as Hewitt and I think Murray has more shot selections than Hewitt so Murray will trouble Roddick tomorrow. Murray's speed will benefit him alot aswell. So hope Tommy Haas can do something spectacular tomorrow.
James. Posted 2 July 2009 Posted 2 July 2009 Serena is getting bullied by Dementieva. Good, can't stand the fucking Williams sisters.

How great would that be? murray to win and haas beating Fed, I understand a lot of fans want a fed v murray final but I just want murrayto win it, and playing haas in the final would increase his chances I think.
FilboFox Posted 2 July 2009 Posted 2 July 2009 YES! Serena through to the final where she will no doubt be joined by her sister!

But if Murray played Haas, you'd be completely wrong on the finalists. The world would implode surely.
Joe. Posted 2 July 2009 Posted 2 July 2009 Think Venus will win the women's singles, just totally embarassed Safina. Never understood how Safina managed to work her way up to number one in the first place without a grand slam win, ridiculous.
Ultra Posted 2 July 2009 Posted 2 July 2009 But maybe it's Serena's turn this year. None of the previous finals between the sisters have lingered long in the memory.
Anish Posted 2 July 2009 Posted 2 July 2009 The women's rankings have been a joke for a while. Both Jankovic and Safina have come into Wimbledon in the last 2 years as number 1 yet neither of them has a Grand Slam between them. The Williams sisters, and particularly Venus, are literally on another level when it comes to Wimbledon. They are simply better than the rest of the tour, although Dementieva gave Serena a run for her money today. The Williams sisters are two of the best women tennis players of all time, but one of the reasons people (including me) dislike them is their attitude and arrogance and their lack of grace. However, you can't question their ability when they are focused.
Darkzzz_ Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Yeah the rankings system is a joke, A little like the Fifa world rankings. I prefer Venus out of the two sisters although Serena has one of those massive backsides that you just can't help but admire. But that is nothing to do with the tennis of course, I just think Venus is the better of the two and she comes across as a nice woman of the court. As for Murray, I have to give him so much respect for the way he has sailed through this year, he has certainly won me over with his game as I have always been critical of him, he has improved so much and he can certainly go on and win this now, but only because Nadal isn't there!
