purpleronnie Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 He supports Paraguay v England, i'll support whoever he plays.I can honestly say no-one I know actually likes him. So you dislike him because he said (tongue in cheek btw) he wanted paraquay to win, don't you think thats a little hypocritical? Pretty sure most england fans would have wanted the scotland team to lose too. I guess when you read an edited interview and believe everything you read theres no help for you.

I guess when you read an edited interview and believe everything you read theres no help for you. Tit for tat, as I said I just don't like the bloke along with many others, and as i've already said certainly no-one I know likes him. And don't give me the "he's British you should support him" shit, if you look through the Boxing thread certain people don't like Hatton or Calzaghe and have wanted the opposition to win.
martyn Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Why is it important to mention that he is unpopular amongst your peers?
Milky Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Murray identifies himself as "Scottish, but also British".[90][91] Prior to Wimbledon 2006, Murray caused some public debate[92] when he was quoted as saying he would "support anyone but England" at the 2006 World Cup. He received large amounts of hate mail on his website as a result.[93] It was also reported (incorrectly, it turned out) that Murray had worn a Paraguay shirt on the day of England's World Cup match with the South American team.[94] Murray explained that his comments were said in jest during a light-hearted interview with sports columnist Des Kelly,[95] who asked him if he would be supporting Scotland in the World Cup, in the knowledge that Scotland had failed to qualify for the tournament.[96] Kelly stated another tabloid had later "lifted a couple of them [comments] into a 'story' that took on a life of its own and from there the truth was lost" and that he despaired over the "nonsensical criticism".[97] Murray protested that he is "not anti-English and never was"[90] and he expressed disappointment over England's subsequent elimination by Portugal.[98] In an interview with Nicky Campbell on BBC Radio 5 Live, Tim Henman confirmed that the remarks had been made in jest and were only in response to Murray being teased by Kelly[95] and Henman.[99] He also stated that the rumour that Murray had worn a Paraguay shirt was untrue.[99] In an interview with Gabby Logan for the BBC's Inside Sport programme, Andy said that he was both Scottish and British and was comfortable and happy with his British identity.[100] He said he saw no conflict between the two and was equally proud of them. He has also pointed out that he is quarter English with some of his family originating from Newcastle, his coach is Scottish and that his girlfriend, Kim Sears, is English.[101]
Father Ted Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 I honestly thought Murray was going to make it to the final but I'm quite glad now as he doesn't gain many WR points of Djokovic now Anyway, the Serbs have still got Nenad Zimonjic and Danijel Nestorovic in the mens doubles final tomorrow.
Samilktray Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Tit for tat, as I said I just don't like the bloke along with many others, and as i've already said certainly no-one I know likes him.And don't give me the "he's British you should support him" shit, if you look through the Boxing thread certain people don't like Hatton or Calzaghe and have wanted the opposition to win. Boxings different Im afraid.
Father Ted Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Boxings different Im afraid. I'm afraid that in the context that Matt used it, it is not.

FilboFox Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Fan-****ing-tastic! All I need now is for Roddick to win the men's and Serena to win the women's and it'll be the perfect Wimbledon! Well played Murray, he certainly quashed a lot of the negative things I had said about him in the past, this tournament... but f**k me I'm glad he's out!
Ultra Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Now that Murray has lost, there are plenty of fcukwits rubbing their hands (among other things) with glee. They're no better than the celts who crow whenever England are knocked out of the World Cup. When England produces a male tennis player who can reach the standards of the Williams sisters, let alone Federer & Co, then its followers may be entitled to have a pop.

I'm genuinely interested Filbo, what on earth has Murray displayed this tournament to make you revise your opinions/soften your attitude? I'm glad you are looking at things from a less partizan persepctive but truth told, he didn't produce anything above what we know he can do already.
BoneDog Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 He supports Paraguay v England, i'll support whoever he plays.I can honestly say no-one I know actually likes him. Same here on both counts. The lads a bit of a nobhead. He uses a third of his energy on no need aggression when he loses a point by screaming and punching thin air or his racket! People might say he's being passionate but I say he's acting like a 13 year old bad loser on the football field at dinner-time at school. We all know a few. I might be wrong cos I haven't seen too much of him tbh. Perhaps if he focused a bit more on controlling his emotions he might improve 10%
BoneDog Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 From what I've seen of tennis on grass Federer is as near to perfection as you can get.

C-man Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 He supports Paraguay v England, i'll support whoever he plays.I can honestly say no-one I know actually likes him. Seriously that's the worst argument for disliking him. In tennis they play under GBR not ENG or SCO. Did anyone else think he shouted 'Cunt' (or Caaant) after 'Come on' when he claimed he shouted 'Pass'?

breadandcheese Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 You are. I don't like it when he celebrates unforced errors with large shouts. It's a bit ungracious to an opponent who's just hit a bad shot and I agree with El Empty, it's like a 13 yr old. The one you played who cheered every time you hit the ball into the net. Murray's a great player, but I'd like to see him cheering himself when he hits his winners and being more sporting on opponents' unforced errors.

So, albeit different sport but same principle, if a player scores an own goal in football, should the opponents not celebrate getting a goal on behalf of the player's error? What do you expect Murray to do?

What do you expect Murray to do? I don't think it is a fair comparison to make between the sports. In football, it is acceptable to put your opponent off through a variety of means by both you or the crowd. This is not so in tennis.

breadandcheese Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 yes it is, otherwise why would the grunting, in the women's game especially, have gotten to such a ridiculous level there is talk of banning it? You're wrong. It is illegal to grunt and put your opponent off. It is up to the umpire to stamp all over it. At the moment, the debate is over whether a player grunts to gain an unfair advantage, or whether they are grunting to help their game. Personally, I take the view of Navratilova and think the grunts should be stopped.
Jimmy Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 but the point is the grunts have become an accepted part of the game done for no other reason then to put your opponent off, its not even on the same issue as shouting "come on!" after the other player misses a shot, which can't possible put them off as there is a break in play anyway

It would be good for Britain if we had a tennis player who won tournaments, and Murray is by far and away the best hope of doing that.
