Samilktray Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 This will be fantastic! No better way to shut all your doubters up than signing for the best club in the world, and then bagging 15+ goals in your first season. Come on Mickey!
Darkzzz_ Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Yeah... Go Mickey... Go ! I quite liked this: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/gallery...cture=349612170 The Auto Trader was the best one.
Tommeh Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Can't see this as anything other than an inspired signing by SAF, he rarely gets it wrong and on a free after banking £80m from Ronaldo, great business. Still think there's another wide man to come in but Owen will be their 1st natural finisher since RVN left, and don't give me this Berbatov bollocks.
Tommy G Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 If he stays fit then this could be one of the best signings Ferguie has made, and for FREE!
J.Lisemore Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Good signing. Owen has been unimpressive in recent seasons but I think that Fergie can get the best out of him. Bareing in mind he was on something like £125,000 a week at Newcastle i doubt Fergie would give him that much, but hey if someone asked me to take a reasonable pay cut to play for Man Utd i wouldn't say no.

J.Lisemore Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 he's supposed to have been offered £50,000 a week to play but heavy goal bonus' I believe Decent offer. But it depends whether hes more into the money or the football. Then again i can't see any other team that has been linked offer him any more than that.
Simi Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Some of the Plastic Manc's reactions have been strange. Some ranging from "I can't beleive we've signed this no hoper, we can no longer compete with the big boys" to "Signing of the summer! Go on Fergie my son!" Most of the United fans that have been on SSN have really lost track of what it's like to not be the powerhouse in world football. Their expectations are outrageous, this summer has shown them that they aren't the be all and end all and with Fergie not going to be around forever, I reckon they need to firm the squad up very soon. As for next season, I think United will be fine. The same panic was around when Beckham left. Yes, Owen is not going to get any better like Ronaldo did. However, Ferguson knows exactly what he's doing and I still expect them to retain the league.

Then again i can't see any other team that has been linked offer him any more than that. he's gonna be f**cking minted anyway, I'm sure he has his eye on breaking the goalscoring record for england, and if he can show Capello what he can do then he could get back in the side. He wouldn't have a chance do do that with Hull for example.
breadandcheese Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 I love the reaction to this. One week ago, Owen was sh*t, he was being mocked, he was past it, etc. Today, he's a brilliant player, a masterstroke be Fergie. Personally, I think Owen's past it as he's lost his pace and struggled to adapt to this. He'll score goals, but against lower league teams, rather than on the European stage. I can only assume this signing, rather than say Huntelaar for £12-15m, is down to the faith Fergie has in Macheda and Wellbeck to step up next season. If I was Fergie though, I'd have bought Huntelaar.
ACF Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Go for it, he's got nothing to lose. If he succeeds at Yanited, he will be back in the frame for WC2010, and if he doesnt, he's playing for a team playing Europe. SAF you genius!

I can only guess this is on a pay as you play deal which I suppose wouldn't be too bad as there's no risk but still don't think he's world class anymore.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 He'll get them some goals, but if I was a United fan I'd want them to sign someone a bit less injury prone as well.

Fooking armchair fans nothing worse. They all come out of the rotting woodwork like cockroaches dont they. Does anyone else hate that phrase "ive always supported them even when they were crap" or "they are my second team". I was asked a few months ago who my second team was, or who my premier team is, by some 19 year old wannabe scouse fan from Leicester whose never been to any live game. I nearly blew a fuse. My 1st 2nd and third team is city. As for Owen, never rated him even when he was scoring for fun. One dimensional player.
Jon the Hat Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 This. Shocking signing for united. I can only guess this is on a pay as you play deal which I suppose wouldn't be too bad as there's no risk but still don't think he's world class anymore. Crap. This is a win win situation for United. 1) Costs sod all in terms of thier budget. 2) Great role model for the young strikers. 3) He might just stay fit and bang in some key goals. 4) Annoys Liverpool fans 5) Fills a gap until some young players come through. 6) Saves some cash for next year when lots of big players want to leave Real Madrid cos they played 13 minutes of football all season. 6) Makes an old man happy. (He has wanted Owen for years).

You need the best of the best. Yes he will be a good role model etc etc but im talking about world class firepower which he is not. I wish him all the best and hope he proves everyone wrong and im eating my words come next summer as it can only benefit the national team but I just can't see it. Momo Sylla mkII Darren Anderton mkII
Samilktray Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Michael Owen is a first class goal scorer, you dont lose the instinct in and around the box to score goals because of a few injuries.
Edmund Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Michael Owen is a first class goal scorer, you dont lose the instinct in and around the box to score goals because of a few injuries. Kieron Dyer, Harry Kewell

Momo Sylla mkII Darren Anderton mkII He got 10 goals playing for Newcastle. To say it is a fact he will not score 20 for United is bold. World class firepower does come for £50k a week on a free transfer. You also need backup, becuase world class firepower is not happy on the bench.
Edmund Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 But they're midfielders... Yep but the point is that injury can have an effect on ability.
Joe. Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Yep but the point is that injury can have an effect on ability. Sam was talking about instinct not ability.

My 1st 2nd and third team is city. As for Owen, never rated him even when he was scoring for fun. One dimensional player. its ridiculous. all this achieves is taking money away from the smaller clubs forcing them into terrible finacial situations (luton, southampton) despite "supporting these teams" they don't feel any sort of pride when "their team" wins a trophy. the don't get that feeling that we got after we won the title or even cardiff fans got from reaching the FA cup final a couple of years back. Personally i like goading these "Fans" when "their team" loses out on trophies.
Edmund Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Sam was talking about instinct not ability. Ok, but surely to be able to conduct your instinct you need ability. Anyway ive obviously ruffled a few feathers in this Michael Owen love in. Only time will tell and like ive said I wish him all the best but IN MY OPINION I just don't think he will cut it. Thats all I have o say on the matter. Im out of here.

Only time will tell and like ive said I wish him all the best but IN MY OPINION I just don't think he will cut it. The thing is, the phrase we always hear in Michael Owen's defence is "if he stays fit...". That's not only a big If, that's a monumental If. This is a bloke who has been utterly shit, ridiculous injury-prone and out of his depth for 4 [four] years and he is still regarded very highly. It baffles me. I have never seen a player who live so much on past glory as Michael Owen.
