Matt Posted 22 June 2009 Posted 22 June 2009 Hull manager Phil Brown is interested in bringing Newcastle striker Michael Owen to the KC Stadium. The former England forward, 29, whose deal at the relegated St James' Park club expires at the end of June, is keen to return to the Premier League. Brown told Hull's Daily Mail: "He has a proven track record as a goalscorer and that's an area we're keen to strengthen but it'd have to be on the right terms. "It's been sounded out as a possibility but there's been no offer put to him." Owen, who signed a four-year deal when he moved to Newcastle from Spanish side Real Madrid in August 2005 for a club record fee of £16m, is available on a free transfer. But his time on Tyneside has been plagued by problems, including breaking a metatarsal bone, suffering knee ligament damage at the 2006 World Cup, undergoing a double hernia operation and a thigh injury. Earlier in June, Owen's management company sent a brochure to potential buyers to remind them of the talent that saw him score 158 goals in about 300 games for Liverpool and 40 goals in 89 appearances for England. Last season Owen scored 10 goals in all competitions although an ankle injury and groin operation forced him to miss five games. The forward, who is widely reported to be earning more than £100,000-a-week at St James' Park, has made 79 appearances for the Magpies and scored 30 goals in four seasons. Owen has recently also been linked with a move to Aston Villa.
The Blur Posted 22 June 2009 Posted 22 June 2009 I'm stunned that he managed to score 10 goals last season!
Libertine Posted 22 June 2009 Posted 22 June 2009 He has to go to Villa. Would be perfect. He was always great with Bruno too.
dandannieldanok Posted 22 June 2009 Posted 22 June 2009 He has to go to Villa. Would be perfect. He was always great with Bruno too. Would have been decent 5 years ago maybe, would smell of desperation on Villa's part if they went for Owen.
Jon the Hat Posted 22 June 2009 Posted 22 June 2009 Would have been decent 5 years ago maybe, would smell of desperation on Villa's part if they went for Owen. If he can stay fit he will score goals. On a pay as you play deal he will go to the likes of Villa, Everton, Spurs.
The Blur Posted 22 June 2009 Posted 22 June 2009 If Villa signed Owen then where would Carew and Ablongahor would play?
Jon the Hat Posted 22 June 2009 Posted 22 June 2009 If Villa signed Owen then where would Carew and Ablongahor would play? Gabby has been inconsistent, and Carew had injuries. I would say that Carew, Heskey, Ablongahor and Owen would be a pretty tasty set of strikers to have at your disposal.
StanSP Posted 22 June 2009 Posted 22 June 2009 If Villa signed Owen then where would Carew and Ablongahor would play? Rotation system maybe?
The Blur Posted 22 June 2009 Posted 22 June 2009 Rotation system maybe? All of them would expext a starting place every week tbh Only Harewood and Delfunso would be happy to be bench warmers
Libertine Posted 22 June 2009 Posted 22 June 2009 Carew would be an impact sub. Owen and Gabby would rotate to play with Heskey I reckon. O'Neill could get him playing well again, he needs a season where he gets 12-15 goals and he should be alright. Villa would be perfect for him, a big club but not too big that there's heaps of expectation.
Kilworthfox Posted 22 June 2009 Posted 22 June 2009 Would have been decent 5 years ago maybe, would smell of desperation on Villa's part if they went for Owen. You have to be kidding! Michael Owen is still a great player! He has been plagued by injuries since he was injured against Sweden. He scored 10 goals last season in a poor team and he was not match fit was he. Don't believe the red top press who are quick to build up but even quicker to knock down. Owen is the most dangerous forward England have, and once he proves himself again he could be an extremely valuable asset to us in South Africa. Capello knows that from his time at Real when Owen has an awesome scoring record from the bench.

DB11 Posted 22 June 2009 Posted 22 June 2009 I don't think he'd be wise going to Villa, but Hull on the other hand would be a good move. See if he can cut it there and then get the big teams interested again.
Corky Posted 22 June 2009 Posted 22 June 2009 Really can't see him going to Hull. He's still, when fit and on form, a terrific goalscorer and would suit Spurs or Everton, as others have said.
Shrenchel Posted 22 June 2009 Posted 22 June 2009 Phil Brown is exactly the sort of mug that would be sold something by marketing this bad - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/...nd-striker.html Apologies if it's a repost, aint seen it.

Yeah, I'm sure signing Owen would help shift a few more Hull shirts in Shanghai.
Shrenchel Posted 22 June 2009 Posted 22 June 2009 Yeah, I'm sure signing Owen would help shift a few more Hull shirts in Shanghai. Mate he could shift Rochdale shirts in Burkina Faso. Look at all his brand values that he most definitely has
Samilktray Posted 22 June 2009 Posted 22 June 2009 I cant beleive people have wrote him off. I hope he shuts everyone up wherever he goes, great player and professional.
Koke Posted 22 June 2009 Posted 22 June 2009 What a waster. No serious top 8 club would touch him - and if Hull wants to break their wage cap on this sick note, then by all means do it, good luck. Just be prepared that he will spend 75% of the time on your treatment table, and not the actual pitch. 25-29 was the age Owen was supposed to be at his peak, but instead he has been too injury prone, lost his pace and has turned utterly shite. He's 30 later this year, so I don't know why people will think he will suddenly be the old Michael Owen again. He was good back in them days, but he's fucking wank now.

So the red top media would have you believe. Look at the stats though. Newcastle is not the place to be if you pick up an injury - they have a long record of making people worse.
leicesterseddon Posted 22 June 2009 Posted 22 June 2009 Of all the made-up speculative rubbish I've heard, this takes the biscuit. Hull will never be in a position to afford his wages, and Owen would never want to go there. They have spent 1 season in the First Division in their entire history. Never going to happen. Phil Brown is just a complete twonk.

Newcastle is not the place to be if you pick up an injury - they have a long record of making people worse. He's played less than 80 games in 4 years - that stat alone would scare the hell out of me if I was a Hull fan. You can't blame everything on Newcastle. Owen has to take most of responsibility - it's not like Newcastle have a shit medical staff, compared to other clubs. Owen used to heavily rely on his pace, that was his biggest asset, and now he has lost that.
