Jon the Hat Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 The thing is, the phrase we always hear in Michael Owen's defence is "if he stays fit...". That's not only a big If, that's a monumental If. This is a bloke who has been utterly shit, ridiculous injury-prone and out of his depth for 4 [four] years and he is still regarded very highly. It baffles me. I have never seen a player who live so much on past glory as Michael Owen. I will say it again. 10 goals last season for Newcastle. Who were appalling. He also played in about 40 games. Newcastle rushed him back from injuries a few times because they were desperate. This is what causes recurrance of injuries.

Sorry, I just don't see how you can lay all the blame at the door of Newcastle's medical staff. Owen is equally responsible for his health. Everyone have been collectively shit for Newcastle, and I find it strange that you think Owen is immune from criticism for Newcastle's downfall. He was part of the problem. Newcastle fans have no time for him and have complained about his attitude on the pitch and lack of respect for the club.
Daggers Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Sam was talking about instinct not ability. My dog had his bollocks cut off - he continues to have the instinct to shag but no longer possesses the ability. Owen has lost his goal-scoring bollocks.
breadandcheese Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 I will say it again. 10 goals last season for Newcastle. Who were appalling. He also played in about 40 games. Newcastle rushed him back from injuries a few times because they were desperate. This is what causes recurrance of injuries. Ricardo Fuller, Carlton Cole, Benni McCarthy all scored more goals than Owen last season. James Beattie and Jason Roberts had a comparable goals per game ratio to Owen last season. Owen is not able to play at the highest level. He'll get goals against the lesser teams in the league, but that will be more to do with the gulf in class between the whole Man U team and the opposition. If Wellbeck and Macheda are able to step up, then he is not a bad squad player to have around. If the youngsters are not good enough, then this is a mistake as Berbatov and Rooney fight for the same space on the pitch and are not a good combo up front, particularly without Ronaldo to play higher up the pitch.
Fox92 Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 He will be a great signing. At last, playing in a winning side again. Confidence will be back. Fergi will get him back on track. He'll score goals, goals and goals and become the striker that he once was (or still is in some cases because remember he scored some goals for a relegated club) Enough said.
C-man Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Best transfer of the summer. Hugely excited to see him play for United.
Jodranadinho Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Owen is a lucky man. how many players do you know that get relegated and then sign for the league champions?
Jodranadinho Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Alan Smith?Or were they not Champions that year im not sure, one to look up
Radovan's Caravan Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Fascinating one this, fascinating. Superficially it looks like good business for that old gangster Ferguson (all those bent tips on the gee gees!) - no fee and a modest, short term, performance related contract. And a miracle move (at least it appears that way) for Owen. Personally I think he will rise to the challenge. So watch out Wolves, Birmingham and Burnley when Michael gambols on with 15 minutes to go! But what does this say about about Man U, the Glazers and that £600 million debt mountain? They've still got a £60 million + surplus on Ronaldo's fee - be interesting to see how much more of that they are going to dish out. Real & Barca look set to win the great Asian shirt war unless Old Trafford can respond with a loony bid for er..who exactly. So no Champions League win for Fergie next season methinks. And as Ancelotti does a very good impression of Guus Hiddink the league title could be Chelsea's.
Ultra Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 im not sure, one to look up No they weren't, it was the year Arsenal last won it.
Ultra Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Owen is a lucky man. how many players do you know that get relegated and then sign for the league champions? Roy Keane did it when he moved to Manyoo from Forest.
Daggers Posted 3 July 2009 Posted 3 July 2009 Genius signing! And the last season Ferguson will work as a manager.
Smudge Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 No idea why but I am really pleased for Owen, I think he has made some poor decisions and could have ended up a football pensioner. Cudos to Ferguson for taking a chance; I truly hope it works out for both parties. If so Fabio will have one more arrow up his sleeve. ( Yes I know it's a mixed metaphor)
Unabomber Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 Owen at Man U. Ronaldo gone Tevez gone Benzema won't sign Ribery won't sign Villa won't sign Pretty bad signing imo even if he is free.
Daggers Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 Owen at Man U. Ronaldo gone Tevez gone Benzema won't sign Ribery won't sign Villa won't sign Pretty bad signing imo even if he is free. Has anyone made the "...even the Man from Del Monte said NO" gag yet?
Ultra Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 Owen at Man U. Ronaldo gone Tevez gone Benzema won't sign Ribery won't sign Villa won't sign Pretty bad signing imo even if he is free. They'll just move on to other targets. Luis Fabiano may be available. Fergie will make at least three big-money buys before the start of the season.
Bert Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 I know many people are doubting the signing, but Alex Ferguson knows what he's doing. He wouldn't have signed him if he didn't think it was a risk.
lildave3 Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 The more I think about this, the more it makes sense. His new Solskjaer.
Radovan's Caravan Posted 8 August 2009 Posted 8 August 2009 As usual, Murdoch's rag seems to know things that the rest don't: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport...ello-again.html I have noticed that Owen loses confidence in one on ones and when he has time. I have never ever seen him round a keeper (unlike your Mr Fry Up against Valothingymyjig ). Another half finished product in the tarnished traditions of UK Academies Inc, Lilleshall PLC and Pithead Nurseries Ltd.
