Soar Fox Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 Watched on the TV - was distracted by the constant complaints that a certain someone was missing eastenders. (BBC Three mother!)Weale 8 - Clean tidy performance - good saves, both when it counted and it didn't Neilson 7 - decent performance, just not very exciting Hobbs 7 - decent performance, just not very excitingBrown 7.5 - decent performance, mildly exciting McGivern 4 - Why he decided that a starting position of four yards in front of the back three, (with winger + pace to burn stood behind ready to run onto the ball) was where he needed to be I don't know. Amateur defending - and shit throws too. Oakley 7 - decent performance, just not very exciting King 7 - decent performance, just not very exciting Wellens 7 - decent performance, just not very exciting Note - from the TV high shot, it't not very easy to tell these three apart! Gallagher 7.5 - slight more than decent performance, a few exciting touches. Nice to see he backs both of his feet. Fryatt 7 - got into the right places, just didn't get the ball into the right places. (Matty if you're reading - I suggest toe punt next time!) Waghorn 7.5 - decent performance, just not very exciting, except for the goal. He has no neck? subs: Howard 7 - decent performance, just not very exciting Campbell 6 - standing up and staying on-side are not his strong points are they Berner 7 - decent performance, just not very exciting Post match interviewer; 9 - Leicester Shity Shirt indeed! He, he Why would you want your defence to be "exciting"?! What are you expecting a 40 yard mazy run, beating 8 men, only to lose the ball and be out of position?
Ultra Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 TV Weale 8* - some vital saves tonight. Neilson 6 - improvement on recent performances but still not great. Hobbs 6 - looked very uncertain at times against mobile strikers. Brown 6 - excellent in the air, not so great on the ground though. McGivern 5 - roasted at times by McAnuff and Kebe, needs some time out of the firing line. Oakley 6 - struggled badly at times but redeemed himself with assist. Wellens 6 - not at his best but showed signs of form in closing stages. King 5 - off the pace again, only came into game in last 10 minutes. Gallagher 7 - the only City outfield player who looked comfortable with the ball. Fryatt 6 - held ball up well at times, still needs to work on 1-on-1s though. Waghorn 6 - quiet game, but made the most of only real chance. Howard 7 - best performance for some time, unlucky not to score late on. Campbell 6 - plenty of effort but still match-rusty. Berner - n/a Pearson 5 - not his best team selection, especially at left-back and in midfield. Just as well Reading couldn't finish.
Bert Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 Weale 8 - Composed, makes his decision and sticks with it, excellent kicking. Neilson 6 - Played his part in a clean sheet, didn't do much, but didn't do anything wrong. McGivern 6 - Looked a bit shaky tonight, Jimmy Kebe ripped him to bits. Brown 7 - Perhaps our best outfield player, threw himself at everything and come out on top. Hobbs 6 - Got done a few times but was generally solid. Oakley 5 - Very poor passing, looked very tired towards the end, could well have made a goal for DJ, but shot instead. King 5 - Aside from nearly costing us a goal with a bad interception and one shot, I seen very little from King. Wellens 6 - Adds that extra bite to the midfield for us and makes space and time for himself very well. Gallagher 7 - Started off very well and is technically very good. Would like to see him up front. Fryatt 6 - Should've scored, chased things down and gets into some fabulous positions. Waghorn 7 - For a small guy, uses his body very well and shows that if you're determined to win a ball, you'll more than likely do so. Howard 6 - Looked really good, gave us a different option, it's just a shame he won't be able to do that regularly for 90 minutes. Unlucky not to score. DJ 6 - Offside a few times, but 2 of them were dodgy, gets into some good positions and scares the hell out of defenders with his pace. Armchair view.
multipack Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 Robbie Neilson had a great game tonight. Offers more than Morrison can who was IMO not that effective v derby People are being bit picky on here. McGriven was awful and why is Berner being kept out.
fox123 Posted 26 October 2009 Posted 26 October 2009 Whilst not the best Left Back in the World, I feel Mcgivern's ratings have been pretty harsh!? 4 for a defender that contributed in a clean sheet is harsh... Brown was immense and Hobbs had a decent couple of challenges, but that's it. Midfield not brilliant, helped out where needed. Lucky, that is all, and it's about time we had that luck.
Guest Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 At the Game Weale 8 MOM Neilson 7 Hobbs 7 Brown 7 McGivern 5.5 - Got beaten quite a bit tonight, think Bruno should be there instead against QPR Oakley 6.5 King 5 Wellens 7 Gallagher 6 Fryatt 6 Waghorn 7 subs: Howard 7 Campbell 5.5 Reading were fooking awful, reminded me of us a couple of years ago, played some half decent stuff (mostly cos we gave them loads of space to) but couldn't score for love nor money. Think they'll be VERY lucky to stay in this division this season on that showing
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 Why would you want your defence to be "exciting"?!What are you expecting a 40 yard mazy run, beating 8 men, only to lose the ball and be out of position? Defending can be exciting! Purhapse a few more heroic challenges and dominating Rasiac and Church rather than banking on them missing would have done the trick?
Finnegan Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 How could anyone mark DJ higher than Waghorn? Weird.
Sampson Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 Robbie Neilson had a great game tonight.Offers more than Morrison can who was IMO not that effective v derby Really?! I thought Morrison was easily our best player vs Derby. Oakley went missing on the right, and he had to both defend and attack the wing single-handedly. His positioning and defending was spot on all game, and he got forward and got a couple of dangerous crosses in too.
Thracian Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 How could anyone mark DJ higher than Waghorn? Weird. Because Waghorn hardly had a kick - and that included his goal! Yes, the goal was vital and I'd forgive him everything else in the circumstances, but he didn't look much of a threat generally whereas DJ put considerable pressure on the home defenders.
lildave3 Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 At the game... Weale - 8 Neilson - 6 Hobbs - 6 Brown - 7 McGivern - 5 Oakley - 6 Wellens - 7 King - 7 Gallagher - 7 Fryatt - 5 Waghorn - 7 Howard - 7 DJ - 7.
Russell352 Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 TV:King 8 - His best game this season I felt. Covered well, won a lot of tackles and made some really excellent interceptions in the second half. MOTM. ??? I forgot he was even playing. TBH I came away from that game (watched on TV) thinking 'how the hell did we win this.' 3 points anyhow. If we play like that against QPR tho.....
Ozwin Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 QPR can finish. I do like to think we can beat anyone in this league though, even if it's not the pretty way.
clazkel Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 At the game: Weale 9 - Flipping brilliant Nielson - 6.5 Done what he needed to do but please bring Morrison back, he always gets dropped and doesnt seem to do anything wrong Hobbs - 7 got through us afew times, but pretty solid Brown - 7.5 solid McGivern - 6 got caught out afew times, but the player against him did have pace Berner needs to start Oakley - 7 didnt notice him too much King - 6.5 afew decent tackles but went missing for alot of the game Wellens - 7.5 got stuck in, decent performance Gallagher - 7 nice movement and linked up play Fryatt - 7 got in some decent positions, not sure why he was taken off Waghorn - 7 nice goal, looked dangerous at times Howard - 6.5 DJ - 6.5 would've liked to see Fryatt or Waghorn stay on when Howard come on, rather than subbing both of them, but it all worked out and DJ made some decent runs. All well that ends well
J.Lisemore Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 TV Weale - 8 Nielson - 7 Hobbs - 6 Brown - 7 McGivern - 4 Oakley - 6 King - 5 Wellens - 7 Gallagher - 6 Fryatt - 6 Waghorn - 7 Subs Howard - 6 Campbell - 5 Berner - N/A
Guest ttfn Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 ??? I forgot he was even playing. TBH I came away from that game (watched on TV) thinking 'how the hell did we win this.' 3 points anyhow. If we play like that against QPR tho..... Ordinarily I don't rate King at all (to illustrate this, I even gave him an n/a against Coventry due to his utterly negligible contribution). However last night after a poor first half, he was terrific in the second period. Some nice passing and touches in midfield and some really important clearances near the end.
SamL Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 From the game: - Weale (8) Nielsen (6) Brown (7) Hobbs (7) McGivern (6) Oakley (6) King (6) Wellens (7) Gallagher (7) Fryatt (6) Waghorn (7) Subs: Howard (6) DJ (6) Berner (6)
James. Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 At the game: Weale 8 - love him. Neilson 5 - just doesn't look comfortable. Hobbs 6 - too many openings down the middle for Reading. Brown 7 - solid but guilty of above with Hobbs. McGivern 5 - bit shaky but not as bad as everyone making out. Oakley 5 - probably not entirely comfortable on the right. Wellens 6 - in and out, some decent passing and tackling. King 5 - still not sure if he's doing lots or doing nothing. Gallagher 6 - looked like he could cause problems but needs to be in the middle. Fryatt 6 - needs a goal to get soem confidence back. Waghorn 6 - scored a goal, not loads else to talk about. Subs: Howard 6 - put himself about, standard. Campbell 6 - couple of dangerous runs. Berner 6 - impressed, get him back in the side.
eastendfox Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 TV and absolutely baffled by the high marks given so far for what seemed to me an atrocious performance that against a side who could shoot would have seen us lose by several... Weale 8 - No complaints here, looked confident and in charge of the 6 yard box Neilson 6 - Hardly noticed him, then again given all their attacks went down the other side that's a compliment Brown 6.5 - Far too often allowed their forwards space in the box, set against that a couple of excellent defensive headers Hobbs 5.5 - Didn't look convincing to me at all, surprised by an apparent lack of understanding with Brown McGivern 4 - Absolutely terrible. The only reason I can think of for his place in the side is pressure from the club he's loaned from to start some games Oakley 5 - Good corner, but generally didn't seem to be an influence on the game Wellens 5 - The ease with which Reading sliced through our midfield time and again was worrying. One or two great passes, but really not enough King 6 - Playing as a 5th defender in the second half I thought he did well, but nothing in the first half Gallagher 5 - Looked to have lots of confidence at the start, but soonstarted to struggle in position Fryatt 7 - Some of his hold up play and flick ons were as good as Howard, and great positioning for his runs on goal. But never seems at his best when he's one on one bearing down on the keeper Waghorn 5 - 5 for the goal, 0 for the rest of his play. For much of the first half it felt like we were playing with 10 men, such was his inability to get anything out of the defenders, get onto any flicks, offer anything. I've now seen him half a dozen times and not seen anything to suggest he's got enough quality at this level. Great header though! Howard 6 - Showed his ability to actually hold the ball when he got it, shame his shot at the end just missed, he needs a goal for his confidence Campbell 5 - Still offside far too much Feeling very good that we won, but that is the worst performance I've seen from a Nigel Pearson side, and we'll need to play a lot better on Friday.
evs_the_fox Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 TV: Weale 8 - Did everything that was asked of him Neilson 7 - Better than he has been Hobbs 6 - Caught out of position more than once Brown 6 - Likewise. We looked poor against a side that likes to play along the ground. McGivern 6 - Solid enough. Some unfair criticism on here. Oakley 5.5 - One good delivery. Wasted on the right. King 4 - Was he actually on the pitch? Wellens 6.5 - Did all he could but midfield was over-ran throughout. Gallagher 6 - Nice touches. Wasted on the left. Fryatt 6 - Should have scored one of his one-on-ones. Was disappointed to see him come off; he needs another goal. Waghorn 7 - Getting better all the time. Excellent header. Held the ball up well. Campbell 4 - Offside. Howard 5 - Average. Generally we just looked slow. 2nd to everything. Couldn't retain possession. A great result but a poor performance (sign of a good side?)... Play like that on Friday and we'll get murdered...
Simo86 Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 Weale 9 Neilson 6 McGivern 5 Hobbs 6 Brown 6 Oakley 5 Gallagher 6 King 5 Wellens 7 Fryatt 6 Waghorn 6 Subs- Howard 6, Campbell 5, Berner (not on long enough)
norfolkfox222 Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 Weale 8 Solid, great buy! nielson 7 Not his worse game still caught out once or twice Hobbs 6.5 Sloppy at times Brown 7 Similar to Hobbs but won every header Mcgivern 3 Joke, Too slow, sloppy weak and just hoofs it! Get Berner Back now!! ( only got the 3 cos of the lucky block!) Oakley 6 Passing is shocking at times Wellens 6.5 Not a great performance whole of midfield looked lost at times King 5 Did not notice him in first half! Improved second! Gallagher 7 Best player of night Fryatt 5.5 Two great chances missed and looked very weak! Knocked off ball to easily Waghorn 7 Held up ball well, good header looked lively Subs Howard 7 Great impact sub! Won every header! Felt sorry for him with his chance!! Campbell 6.5 Looked quick offside couple of times AGAIN though! Berner N/a Needs to start against QPR Fans sounded good on TV compared to Reading! Gutted it was a Monday night really wanted to go!

I thought Fryatt held the ball up quite well
TrickyTrev Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 I love the idea that King was 'quietly mopping things up' last night. There was a huge great big bloody hole in between our midfield and defence where Matejovski was playing and usually looking dangerous, we didn't have anyone on the cover. King was playing flat with Wellens and simply didn't get involved. I thought that Fryatt, Waghorn and Hobbs all deserved 6's and Gallagher and Weale something in excess. Everyone else was shit.
Cat Burger Posted 27 October 2009 Posted 27 October 2009 Mc Givern - 0 don't see how he can ever recover from that performance, it's one of the worst I've ever seen in a City shirt. He looked and played like one of Blackburn's swine flu victims with added aids Everything good about his play linked back to balls ups he made in the first place. I feel like I watched a professional suicide last night. Maybe he's a lucky charm because by some miracle we haven't conceded when he's played.
