Cult heroes of the noughties.

Bloody hell we've had some incredibly shit players throughout that decade haven't we? lol. Elvis Hammond? Luigi Glombard? DJ Campbell? I'm actually struggling to figure out if these posts are actually jokes or not! Might aswell say Rufus Brevett or Shaun bloody Newton ffs.

The sad thing is that since I started supporting City in late 2003, I can't think of many players who I would consider a hero. I did have a few favourite players but nobody who did enough for the club or stayed around for long enough to be considered a hero. Having said that though, my personal favourite players for the decade are:

Ferdinand - First season I supported Leicester he scored some great headers and a few rocket free kicks. Plus I was able to say we've got Les Ferdinand :).

Gudjonsson - Probably one of our key players in the 2005/6 season. Scored a few absolute screamers and got a couple of great assists in games I watched (Crewe at home in 2005 and Spurs at home in 2006 for THAT last minute goal from MDV). When he played, I always felt we could win a game, when he didn't play I didn't. (Thats more down to the fact that we were fooking shit but still). I remember he was injured for a few games and during that time we had a goal drought where we hadn't scored in something stupid like 5 games, he then came back against Watford and got us 2 goals. Was gutted when he left us at the end of the season!

Hume - Not the best player but he always gave his all, often won headers which he had no right to get anywhere near considering his height. Scored a few cracking goals too.

Fryatt - Always rated him, even during the 2007/8 season. I know he had a poor couple of years but whenever I saw him play I could always see that he had quality. This showed during our time under Pearson as he really thrived under his leadership, hopefully he can regain the sort of form he showed in the previous 2 seasons under Sven's leadership.

Dyer - Again, not the best player, but whenever I've seen him he gives his all and can often make something happen. Scored a few goals in our League one season too.

Berner - Such a solid player for us. Whenever I saw him play he game me alot more confidence in the team, last year whenever he wasn't playing, I think our defence looked alot more shaky. Saying that though this season he doesn't look nearly as solid, maybe things will change now that Sven is in charge

King - This isn't because of how well he has done in 2010. (Though I do love Kingy for what he's done so far this season  ) but he really grew as a player towards the end of the noughties and chipped in with a few key goals during our league one season when we went up as champions.

As I said, I wouldn't consider any of these players to be heroes. They weren't/haven't been around for long enough to thought of as a hero in my opinion. Also I'm sure that quite a few people may disagree with some of my choices but I have made these judging from my time as a City fan. I haven't been able to get to too many games but I always go when I can and so these choices will probably have been made from the few games I've been to during those seasons. I think that the one player currently at the club who could become a hero for me if he stays at the club for long enough is King. He has enormous potential and really seems to love the club. I think if he stays with us for a few years and continues to be as impressive as he has been then he will become a hero. I thiink the problem is that generally speaking, there just isn't enough loyalty in football these days and players aren't usually around for long enough to be considered a hero.

Billy McKinlay- Arrived at the club after relegation in 2002, agreed to play for nothing (or everything as he stated) and proved a vital part of the team, linking up with the superb Muzzy Izzet. Scored a cracking goal at Coventry too.

Not the best in terms of skill, but attitude and application was first-class.

Definitely agree - McKinlay deserved max respect for his attitude

Im still not convinced he is real.

he was on the bench for the reading game. Or was it milan wearing a false mustache, shades, a hat and a knee length overcoat?

john curtis

alan rogers

Saw John Curtis playing for Gold Coast recently. He came on as a sub, stuck an elbow in someones face and got sent off.

He'd been on the pitch less than a minute lol

Alan Maybury anyone? Was so shit he made every other player look like a hero.

He was so close to becoming THE cult player. Chelsea cup game 4-3 down in the last minute, he hits if I remember correctly a half volley from 20-25 yards. I thought being behind the goal and the flight of the ball, it was going into the top corner, keeper not moving. However that lazy bastard Alex was way out of position and so was in the right place at the right time to head it away from 6 yards out.

And he did put 100% effort so kudos to the ginge for that (what is it with ginger right backs?)

I'm pretty sure nobody has mentioned Lilian Nalis :scarf:

I was just about to do exactly that, word for word almost.

Amazed it took four pages. THAT GOAL was more than most of these shitbags did!

3 players from the Adams promotion season

McKinlay and Summerbee - been said already but those guys turned up and trained for weeks for nothing, and both of them played their parts in our success that season

and Tommy Wright II - The goal against Forest almost guranteed us promotion, was absolutely made up for the kid, goal against local rivals which all but saw us up...such a shame he didn't kick on from there

And a couple of non-playing cult heroes, the guy on Sky Sports Fanzone for the Leeds 4-0 game - pure class...And the guy i was sat next to in our end during Reading away 3-1 who turned to me after about 70 minutes and asked why we were singing a song about somebody called 'Leaky Adams' and his army

The memories of the Nalis goal had clouded how good those Dickov goals were. The first one was a brilliant take on the chest and finish.

Growing up in the Martin O'Neill/Brian Little era with so many shrewd signings and quality players at the club in that time, its amazing to look at some of the awful, awful players who have come through the doors of the walker stadium in the last 10 years.

I feel genuinely sorry for someone that has only supported City since 2003.

lol

Much appreciated. At least there has been the odd decent game down the years. I just stick to away games. Though during the 07-08 seasson I went to 10 games, first one we drew 2-2 with Palace having led 2-1 in the 87th minute. The other 9 games we lost. :(
