Ultra - Leicester's Lord Mayor

Because we know more we can make our own decisions, we don't need to follow an old wives tale (or youtube clip in your case) for some kind of answer.

And Rooney lol Do you know the kind of knowledge that was found in the Pyramids?! It's far more advanced than stuff the average college student in the UK knows. And they are a bit older than you think.

For gods sake, I'm doubting you're even the level of a gcse student as your missing the point by so much. The average student learns about gravity, mathematics, the solar system, the body etc etc etc. A collection of information greater than anything people back then knew, end of. I'm not saying there weren't smart bloody people in the past, put a Newton or a Da Vinci into todays society and they would still be one of the greatest minds. We we have access to information others didn't.

Yeah cus they were built by little green men in their flying ships. :frusty:

Why would I trust or watch the Discovery Channel? Many of their programmes are full of rubbish and have been proved to show false info many times.

Coming from the youtube clip king that's pretty funny.

Educated countries? Are you talking about the UK and the USA for example? There are far more dumbasses over here than in most or all poor countries (if poor countries are what you mean by 'uneducated').

Countries where people have the freedom and the knowledge to decide for themselves, without some nut job ramming stories of miracles down their throat 24/7. "There are far more dumbasses over here than in most or all poor countries" fantastic, would love to see the stats on that.

Actually agree with Ultra on the banning of the prayers - there must be people of all faiths sitting in those council meetings so why on earth do they need to say a Christian prayer (or any other)for that matter before meetings?

Praying for forgiveness by any chance?

I really don't think other religious groups mind. Most other religious people I've met from different faiths would sit respectfully, whilst not recognising the prayer. So they may not say amen at the end, but they won't kick up a fuss or storm out the room or anything like that.

i hate to agree with the principal of what uøtra has done, but i agree with him on this one...

and as for: 'This is just another example of Christian traditions and values being eroded.' - 13 years is hardly a tradition....

mind you, it is just like ultra to have a childish dig at the same time, smuggly declaring his 'delight', unnecessary and inflamatory

Yes I agree that the average student learns about those things, but I doubt Rooney could talk about them! When he was a youth Football and Boxing were his interests. Probably milfs too. That's why I laughed at that one. But I think you're wrong when you say people thousands of years ago didn't know about them. I've seen ancient models of our solar system (funnily enough I think they were from Babylon!) that show the planets in the correct order and even scaled to the correct size. The Pyramids also have alot of information encoded about our solar system. High level mathematics were also used to build them.

Yeah cus they were built by little green men in their flying ships. :frusty:

Not sure why you mention this! I don't believe in little green men, they were built by humans. Precision engineering and better (or at least as good) tools as we use today. One day the text-books will not lie about this, the truth is slowly coming out :D

Coming from the youtube clip king that's pretty funny.

What's wrong with watching Youtube for a bit of entertainment? But yes I do get some info off there when someone posts a Chomsky video or similar. Youtube is a place for people to share all kinds of videos and it's not just videos of people dancing around and acting like prats you know!

I read books by some of the greatest authors/speakers and their info is based in pure fact and they are very careful about that. Chomsky for instance.

Countries where people have the freedom and the knowledge to decide for themselves, without some nut job ramming stories of miracles down their throat 24/7. "There are far more dumbasses over here than in most or all poor countries" fantastic, would love to see the stats on that.

You don't need to see the stats on that surely? Just watch Jeremy Kyle or take a look around you and listen when you are out and about. Do you not think people read books in other countries? In Iraq for example book markets were always very, very busy until the last few years when the country has been smashed to bits again. the people there (and everywhere else) are thirsty for knowledge and they do not get forced to believe in God. I think you listen to too much propaganda. Perhaps you are a fan of The God Delusion? That book has been shown up to be the un-scientific rant it is. It's good to see Dawkins is passionate about his faith though and rants just like a fundamentalist Christian. Fair play to him, but he doesn't convince any rational person with that book.

You have your reply but I'll leave it there because this is going off-topic! :D

Decision to abolish prayers is 'respected'

1640795.jpg

"outdated, unnecessary" You were saying Colin tongue.png

The Bishop of Leicester says he will "continue to pray" for the Lord Mayor of Leicester after the latter abolished prayers at council meetings.

Writing in the Leicester Mercury today, the Rt Rev Tim Stevens says that while he does not agree with CouncillorColin Hall's decision, it is one he "respects and understands".

Coun Hall has abolished the saying of prayers at the start of council meetings because he believes the practice is "outdated, unnecessary and intrusive".

A short prayer has been said at meetings since 1997, with only a one-year gap between 2005-06. In some of the years, the prayer at the monthly meeting has been rotated between different faiths.

1x1.GIFIn his article today, the Bishop says: "He's absolutely right to make the point that the public proceedings of the council should not be seen to favour those of any particular faith persuasion, nor should they assume an adherence to a faith where none exists.

"Very large numbers of people who commit their time and energy to some of the most important causes in our city do so motivated by their faith.

"Over 400 faith-based voluntary groups serve the needs of some of the most hard to reach communities in Leicester.

"They work with asylum seekers, the homeless, the unemployed, young people, single parents, victims of domestic violence, the list is almost endless. The deep convictions of those who work in these areas are often rooted in the faith which they hold."

The Bishop said he respected and valued those whose outlook was secular as well as those whose outlook was religious.

He said he and "other people of faith" would continue to pray for Coun Hall, "whether prayers continue in the council chamber or not".

Writing for the Leicester Secularist group's monthly publication, Coun Hall said: "I am delighted to confirm I will be exercising my discretion as Lord Mayor to abolish the outdated, unnecessary and intrusive practice.

"I consider religion, in whatever shape or form, has no role to play in the conduct of council business.

"This particularly applies in Leicester where the majority of council members, myself included, do not regularly attend any particular faith service."

Fvckin brilliant.

Can't post it on my phone - but look what Britain's Funniest Mayor is apologising for today. Do it. Do it now.

I have hurting sides and tears.

It was, of course, an accident and not done as a desperate cry for help and attention.

Im in tears.

A collegue was actually at this event, apparently it took him ages to notice his Pantloons had escaped his waiste lol

Oh well mate, at least it's evidence all that walking to meetings and diet changing is working. :crylaugh:

Coun Hall recently hit the headlines after choosing to stop the tradition of saying prayers before full council meetings, and choosing not to attend a civic service at the city's cathedral.

the lord moves in mysterious ways Colin

( that's the "lord god" , not the lord mayor )
