Corky Posted 3 April 2010 Posted 3 April 2010 Oakley has struggled this season, but worst captain ever? Tiatto, Clemence?
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 3 April 2010 Posted 3 April 2010 Though I dont think Oakley has had a great season, he should have scored a few and had a few better all round performance, but you cant argue that he captained us to the title and now to the last playoff spot (so far). I dont think he is always vocal enough but not all captains are. He probably has peaked, but there are much worse players than him and much worse captains that we have had before.
Halfsy Posted 3 April 2010 Posted 3 April 2010 I've been saying this for months, i completely agree with you. Someone on here tell me what he does that is constructive for the side? He's miscellaneous in every game, for a central midfielder his passing is poor, he doesn't tackle and he hasn't chipped in with any goals. Jack Hobbs is out stand our performer every game and for me is a natural captain. In fairness to Oakley, playing in a three-man central midfield doesn't help, his best games have been in a 4-4-2. Unfortunately, Pearson keeps persisting with this 4-5-1, which has been found out lately incidentally, but if you're playing a lone-striker you have to possess a goal-scoring threat from midfield and we don't. And on that note, Steve Howard is absolute garbage and i can't understand how Paul Gallagher, technically our most creative player and Dany N'Guessan for that matter are sat on the bench. **** Oakley off, play 4-4-2 with Kingy and Richo in the middle and get two out-and-out wingers in the side.
Kilworthfox Posted 3 April 2010 Posted 3 April 2010 Whilst i don't believe Oakley to be the best captain possible currently at the club, I can not see how it would have a positive effect on our playoff hopes to change the captaincy with 5 games to go. Thinking about it we managed to stay unbeaten with him as captain & with him playing quite poorly so I think this is a non issue. Oakley never seems to give any bolockings or advice whilst on the pitch, unlike Wellens, who IMO appears to be the captain but without the armband?!!!!!!!!! My captain would be Tunch or Wellens, but Hobbs is a decent shout.
maddog Posted 3 April 2010 Posted 3 April 2010 He's played fooking shit all season, any other players wouldn't get away with it. I would say he's been consistently awful, and put him on par if not slightly worse than Neilson and McGivern. And he's not a scapegoat he's simply been shit for the entire season, it's not like he's just been shit for these 4 defeats, it's the whole season.
C.J Posted 3 April 2010 Posted 3 April 2010 He has got to be the worst. I cant think off many as bad as him and I've been watching city since the 80's. What does he give to the team to inspire the lads? He doesnt score enough any goals He cant tackle Passing is hit and miss I dont see him geeing up the players much when we start losing a game How he gets in the team is beyond me let alone skipper the side. I can count the number of good games hes had in on one hand finger (in the championship) since he arrived form Derby. Pearson takes him off most games. Which other clubs do that? Rafa doesn't take Stevie G off ever, or Fergie takes off Rio. Time for a change Jack Hobbs is the natural choice for me.

SamL Posted 3 April 2010 Posted 3 April 2010 As a team with promotion aspirations, we cannot afford to be carrying a certain player within the team. By this, I mean every single player needs to pull their weight and we cannot afford to become a player light. However if this was the case, we simply wouldn't be in the position we find ourselves in now. Over the past few matches, Oakley has constantly been played out of position and this has had a detrimental effect on his performances, yet when he's been moved into the centre he's been as effective as both Wellens and King. As others have said, I really don't see how it is going to be beneficial to our play off hopes by calling for the Captain's head? . We all know that Oakley isn't going to set the world alight in the wide role, but it does the job. If you're going to blame anybody for Oakley's poor performances, it should perhaps be Pearson for constantly playing him out of position.
somebum Posted 3 April 2010 Posted 3 April 2010 He's just going through a bad patch. All the great players have them
somebum Posted 3 April 2010 Posted 3 April 2010 As a team with promotion aspirations, Make that 'promotion delusions'
samjohnson Posted 3 April 2010 Posted 3 April 2010 Oakley has struggled this season, but worst captain ever? Tiatto, Clemence? I would agree with Twato but i wouldnt really like to comment on Clemence... Yes hes been injured and we havent seen alot from him over the past god-knows-how-long. He's played fooking shit all season, any other players wouldn't get away with it. I would say he's been consistently awful, and put him on par if not slightly worse than Neilson and McGivern. And he's not a scapegoat he's simply been shit for the entire season, it's not like he's just been shit for these 4 defeats, it's the whole season. For the first time ever... I agree with Maddog... Wouldnt quite put him on level terms with Neilson and McGivern just yet... But he cant be far off...

Whilst he's not played well every game, he's not been as bad as you think. I'm happy if Pearson wants to keep selecting him, he knows a hell of a lot more than us, and sees Oakley in training every day. One thing you can't question him on his that he always gives 100%. Anyone who says differently needs to have a word with themselves.
caz05 Posted 3 April 2010 Posted 3 April 2010 Derby. On, and leaving, the pitch. And this is where i think all this hate has come from, yes he used to get moaned at before but not to the point where his own fans booed him and called him a willy puller when he gives them applause, rather sad really

jockkkk Posted 10 April 2010 Posted 10 April 2010 I have to confess I've noticed the increasingly wayward passes this season and his regular substitutions have been telling. I'm still a fan though, I think he has a lot to give.
body102 Posted 13 April 2010 Posted 13 April 2010 City to make Wembley , beat F****t 2 nil with Oakley and Wellens scoring their first goals of the season . That would put him up there as a captain who took us from league one to the premier . Keep the faith Oakley still has a massive part to play this season
orod Posted 13 April 2010 Posted 13 April 2010 Very impressed. You must be genius hahahaha yeh maybe just play pearson himself in central midfield and make him captain
The Doctor Posted 13 April 2010 Posted 13 April 2010 hahahaha yeh maybe just play pearson himself in central midfield and make him captain no. Pearson was a defender so play pearson in defence and stick bruno in midfield.
eaststandtom Posted 18 April 2010 Posted 18 April 2010 very disappointed in oakley. have always been a fan of his. his influence last year i felt was crucial to our romotion but his form this seasons has been poor on the whole and he is out of the team on merit. however, guys with 200 premiership games under their belts should not be out of the team to loanees. the team needs guys of his experience taking big games by the cruff od the neck. spearing has been really good and as someone who has backed oakley this season he really needs to look at how he has allowed that too happen to the point where he isnt even onthe bench. i know oakley has been a little unpopular this season just wondering what everyone else thinks. i think he is letting the team down at a stage when we need guys like him firing on all cylinders
Bellend Sebastian Posted 18 April 2010 Posted 18 April 2010 I think he's an intelligent and able player BUT too often this season he's fallen a bit short in some of the basics. It's very frustrating when you see someone pick out the right pass but either play it too short or just behind or infront of its intended recipient, or go in for a challenge where you think they've done all the hard work and then they somehow don't end up coming away with the ball. For me, he's rarely seemed to be firing on all cylinders this season, but why that might be I haven't got a clue
leicesterseddon Posted 18 April 2010 Posted 18 April 2010 Obviously Pearson has finally lost confidence in him, as shown by the fact that a loanee took his place in the team yesterday despite the fact that he was fully fit. I think it can be clearly seen he's only captain in title at the minute, every minute he isn't on the pitch is a dent to his authority in the dressing-room, and others are now sharing out the leadership in his absence. Shame because he did a good job for us last season. The manager has obviously just decided that his performances don't merit a place in the starting line-up, and I have to say I agree with him.
