davieG Posted 27 April 2010 Posted 27 April 2010 From the Merc Matty Fryatt has been cleared for a return to first-team action. The star striker will be available for Sunday's final league game at home to Middlesbrough and the play-offs after being given the green light yesterday. The 24-year-old has not played since breaking his jaw in two places following a collision with Doncaster Rovers captain Brian Stock on February 9. Following surgery, Fryatt was unable to eat solid food for a month and lost 19lb in weight. But he has built himself back up with the help of City's medical staff and is ready to make his comeback. City's promotion challenge was given a further boost with the news that influential midfielder Richie Wellens will also be fit for the play-offs after suffering a hamstring strain. However, defender Michael Morrison's ankle injury will be assessed over the next couple of days to determine its severity. City assistant manager Craig Shakespeare said having Fryatt back for the play-offs would be like having a new player in the ranks. "Matty has looked sharp in training," he said. "He has looked eager to please and what a great addition that will be for the play-offs. "He has been one of our regular goalscorers over the past 18 months and it was an unfortunate injury to pick up just when he was on top form. "It will be like having a new player back. He has been missed and it is great he can see the light at the end of the tunnel. "That will be just the spur he needs that he could be back for the play-offs. He had the scan a fortnight ago and they wanted to give it another two weeks. He doesn't need another scan, it is all clear now." Wellens' hamstring injury is not as severe as first feared and manager Nigel Pearson said he was left out as a precaution for last Saturday's crucial 1-0 win at Preston North End, which booked City's place in the play-offs. "He didn't feel confident enough in the hamstring," said Pearson. "It is not a pull but I would rather miss him for just one game. Now we have four games left potentially. If he had played and pulled it, then we could be missing him for a longer period. "I think it was a case of making a rational decision on what was the best action. "If we had asked him to play he would have put himself in there, but there was always the risk he could damage it even more. "As for Michael, he has suffered a twisted ankle so we will see how it pans out over the next few days. Hopefully, it is not too bad."
MikeyT Posted 27 April 2010 Posted 27 April 2010 Great news about Fryatt, be good to see him back especially for the last league game of the season. Hopefully Wellens and Morrisson should be ok too.
Guest Bilo Posted 27 April 2010 Posted 27 April 2010 Good news and a further boost to an already confident squad. Let's hope he's given some match time on Sunday to prepare for the play-offs, as Fryatt really could be the difference for us in those games.
Corky Posted 27 April 2010 Posted 27 April 2010 Good news that, with Howard out for the next two we have another option.
Head Honcho Posted 27 April 2010 Posted 27 April 2010 Great news He should be given a start to see how long his fitness can keep him out there for as opposed to coming on at some point during the game and not really getting anything out of it.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 27 April 2010 Posted 27 April 2010 Awesome he will need at least a full 90mins before play off so fingers crossed he gets thru it.
StanSP Posted 27 April 2010 Posted 27 April 2010 Don't think he'll play the whole game. Actually, don't think he'll start. Waghorn and Vaughan to start upfront. And Fryatt to come on in second half.
Guest parky0607 Posted 27 April 2010 Posted 27 April 2010 WOOOOHHOOOOOOO!!! Agree with the above .... super sub!
Ford Super Sunday Posted 27 April 2010 Posted 27 April 2010 All we need now is for him to not be listed in the play-off final matchday programme, and us to play an East Midlands team at wembley We also need to go one goal down. So, so close
flanimal Posted 27 April 2010 Posted 27 April 2010 Before he got injured Fryatt scored 12 goals in 29 games. That's a strike rate almost at 1 goal in 2 games. If he is back and match fit, it's not unlikely he could score another 2 goals.

wakeyfox01 Posted 27 April 2010 Posted 27 April 2010 Apart from Gallagher and maybe Waggy, Matty's the one player we've got who can score a goal from nothing or do something special, ala that run against Newcastle. With him Waggy and Vaughan we've probably got best strikeforce of all the play-off teams!
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 27 April 2010 Posted 27 April 2010 Like to see him against Boro, would get a great reception which would only help him.
Ozwin Posted 27 April 2010 Posted 27 April 2010 He is adorded by most Leicester fans, can't wait to welcome him back on Sunday, assuming he'll come on at some point.

King also has the ability to do something special or socre vital goals, ala the run against Preston, which actually resulted in a goal.
dogadug Posted 27 April 2010 Posted 27 April 2010 Spoke to him before and he seems like such a nice chap. So please that he's back, and will be able to help us win the play-offs
ScouseFox Posted 27 April 2010 Posted 27 April 2010 Brillaint news about Matty. Get some match time, and a great ovation from the city fans, (and maybe a goal ), giving his brilliant confidence for the play offs, and us another good striking option. And great news Wellens isn't too bad either. Fingers crossed on Morro.

Yeah forgot about King He can score the odd screamer and has come up trumps with a number of winners lately and is probably one of the best finishers in the team even though he's a midfielder. I was just trying to say with Fryatt back we've got an even better chance of promotion
Trav Le Bleu Posted 27 April 2010 Posted 27 April 2010 Great news and great that we've got a fairly unimportant game to give him a partial (I certainly woudn't start him) run out before the play-offs. 30 mins v Boro, again for 1st semi and starting for 2nd semi, assuming all goes well.

This. Let him slowly get back into match action. And then he sinks F*4%st with a late strike at Wembley.
Jimmy Posted 27 April 2010 Posted 27 April 2010 didn't we actually play that after he scored in 1 game a couple seasons ago
BoneDog Posted 27 April 2010 Posted 27 April 2010 Glorious news about Fryatt The squad have done us proud since Fryatt's been out but it is a real boost to have him back.
iancognito Posted 28 April 2010 Posted 28 April 2010 About 18 months ago, most people's reaction to this news would have been "meh!", it's great to have some proper heroes again, not just matty but most of the first team squad.
