Not really…. Waterloo is one place, with lots of other places named after the battle…. But I doubt that a cabby would make the mistake of popping over to Belgium!

Waterloo is a district in London (also Liverpool, Poole and Huddersfield.)

 

Within London's Waterloo there is a Waterloo Hospital, Waterloo bridge and Waterloo Place.

 

There's also a hamlet named Waterloo in both Scotland and Wales.

 

So defining that the person meant Waterloo Station makes perfect sense and isn't humorous.

I have grabbed a taxi and said "Waterloo please mate" countless times, and never has the taxi driver asked for clarification.

Exactly, lovely place Poole.  Pop on the Ferry over to Studland Bay!  Admittedly it was unfortunate to have to do a runner from the taxi due to the 700 quid fare but still.
