I think at the start of this season, i would of happily took most of those players, but after this season i feel we probs could attract a bit of a higher calibre of player. Few more bigger clubs might be willing to loan us players and we might be able to prize a few more other players after this seasons work.

Darren Abrose is probably the only standout from that list I'd take.

Not Danny Graham who's banged them in for Watford? Charlie Austin who's been a revlation at Swindon? Nicky Maynard who's scored some complete wonder goals this season?

Go bed.

I'd say they're all decent players and realistic too, perhaps with the exception of the Southampton players, aren't they loaded now? can't see them selling tbh.

I think we need a few players to be honest with you. Downside of the loan system is the constant need to bring new players in if the loanees don't come back.

RB

LB

One CB, possibly even 2

Energetic CM

A couple of STs

Would be great if Waghorn was one of the strikers.

I'd look out for a winger or two as well, both sides.

Maynard? ya having a larf!

Prem teams have been looking at him, 4/5 mil tops...BC signed him for 2.25!

Quite right. The loan system will mean that we lose 5 players, 3 or 4 of whom are probably starters in a full strength XI. This plus the likely departure of Oakley, Howard and Brown and the fact that Neilson, Adams, N'Guessan, Kernorgant and perhaps even Dyer are not good enough to be regular starters means that we have to bring in quite a lot of players.

We need to keep the 'spine' of Weale, Morrison, Hobbs, Berner, Wellens, King and Fryatt intact if we can, though I can see us having to fight to keep Hobbs, King and Fryatt in particular.

For me, this shows where our priorities should lie;

Weale

?????--Morrison--Hobbs--Berner/?????

?????

King--------------Gallagher

?????--Fryatt--?????

I reckon that there will only be a few permanent signings in the summer. We have a good nucleus, so i don't see the need to go mental and sign loads.

Posted

why the fook are people worrying about players?? it's not even the end of May. It needs assessment in june once we know who has been released, when tunchev will be fit? Wil DJ be coming back? there are loads of variables.

the only thing that matters is the signing on NP into a new contract and some people forget that. we will have countless threads of speculation on this site on new players and it's already getting boring.

Some people think it's like football manager!!

This is my opinion on the situation:

Out

Neilson- Free or nominal fee to SPL

McGivern

Solano (might be tempted to keep him)

Oakley- 200k Derby

DJ- 500k if Blackpool do not get promoted, 1mil + if they do.

Wesolowski

Powell- retired

Brown- can't see him staying if Bruce is signed and Tunch hopefully to make a full recovery

Then the usual lot of crap including Verma etc

In

RB- is desperately required, like the look of Seamus Coleman but I don't think Everton will sell.

LB- cover required, Tommy Spurr?

Bruce- has shown enough to be better than Brown

AM/CM- Pratley, Ambrose would be preffered but they are probably out of our price range. Spearing would be welcome back on loan or perm.

ST- Someone like Hooper, Diomansi Kamara, Steven Fletcher (Burnley not Bournemouth lol )

Possibly a winger as well, Cleverly return maybe?

The players mentioned (well some), in your opinions may be completely unrealistic but these are the types of players that are required to improve this very solid backbone.

If there's one thing that the last two seasons under Pearson should have taught us, it's that he will use the loan market through the season to improve the team and there's no way we'll sign everyone we "need" in the summer. A bit boring, perhaps, but the truth.

Aside from the permanent signings of Hobbs and Brown, Pearson obviously identified a few key areas that needed strengthening last summer with the big signings (goalkeeper, right-back, central midfielder and versatile attacker) to varying degrees of effect.

I would say the spine of our side is something like: Weale, Morrison, Hobbs, Tunchev (will be back), Berner, Wellens, King, Gallagher, Fryatt.

Whether Brown, Oakley and Howard will all stay I'm not sure. The young players, along with Berner and Wellens, have been the ones to finish the season strongly. Dyer is a bit too inconsistent at this level to be a permanent fixture. N'Guessan may play more of a role next season possibly.

We've recruited a lot in recent years and needed a lot of investment last summer to fill out a squad that could aim for (and reach) the top six. As long as we keep hold of those important names above, I don't think there will be an awful lot of activity this summer despite people saying we "need" 9 or 10. We have quite a big squad and I'm sure we'll get more loanees in next season.

Loanees like McGivern, Spearing and Vaughan have largely just supplemented what we've already got. The big miss will be Waghorn, regardless of what happened on Wednesday and the goals that he's scored, purely because he has played a huge amount of football this season and that's now a proper gap to fill. If there's any sort of chance at all that we can get him, then fingers crossed. Otherwise, time to move on pretty quickly. The Simon Cox saga last summer was quite damaging I think and, whether it was a masterstroke or a lucky break to get Waghorn in on loan just before the first game, ideally we don't want to have to rely on that sort of move again.

Jason Puncheon - Southampton - Looked keen for Franchise when we were in League One and could be worth a punt.

Elliott Bennett - Brighton - Haven't seen him play so can't comment.

Lee Barnard - Southampton - Ditto.

Charlie Austin - Swindon - Has been excellent for Swindon this season and may have higher ambitions than them if their play-off bid fails.

Derek Riordan - Hibernian - Were linked with him when Martin Allen was here and felt we missed an opportunity by not signing him. Great in the SPL, but so was Robbie Neilson. Mixed feelings.

Kevin Thomson - Rangers - Surely would consider leaving the Old Firm for the Championship a backward step.

Adam Lallana - Southampton - Decent player, worth a punt if they don't want silly money.

Nicky Maynard - Bristol City (???) - Would absolutely love him here but I think we'd only go for such a big signing if an equally big name left us. Let's hope it's DJ and not Fryatt.

Danny Graham - Watford - Superb in the early season for Watford but went off the boil a bit. This may be more down to how poor Watford are than anything else though and they are skint, so room for negotiation is there.

Darren Ambrose - Palace - Palace are pretty much bust so a fire sale is all but certain. Within our price range but there'll be plenty sniffing round him for the same reason. Big achievement if we get him.

Ross Wallace - Preston - Unimpressed by him at Deepdale.

Brett Pitman - Bournemouth - Excellent for Bournemouth this season and there have been other players able to make the step up from League Two to Championship this season.

Adam Le Fondre - Rotherham - Not too sure about this signing. Would have expected to go for a club in a higher division when he left Rochdale two years ago. The fact he hasn't is a concern.

Astonishingly I pretty much agree... Though we could need more than you think if some of our 'senior' players move on and none of this years 5 loanees return.

Money will be tight so we will probably have to mix permanent signings with loans and until Pearson sees what is available and on what terms it is difficult to pick realistic targets.

To mount a serious promotion push we need 15-16 outfield players all capable of being regular starters and as you point out we have about 8. Perhaps 1 or 2 of our fringe players might step up but there is no guarantee that they will, so I still see us needing 7 or 8 outfield players plus a keeper.

My one great hope is that if Howard moves on, as is expected, we make the effort to get away from the longball game that has been the norm for the last couple of seasons.

Considering one of the few games this season where we were definitely second best was PNE beating us in September (NP Quote - "Basically we were beaten by a better side), the news that both their goalscorers that day, Neil Mellor and Richard Chaplow have been transfer listed by Darren Fergy, is interesting.

Obviously PNE have slumped and presumably their form is not what it was, but Chaplow in particular impressed me on that day - energetic, creative but not averse to putting a foot in when it was called for and often when it wasn't (Wellens got a tasty clout in the first minute I remember).

Well, I am not the manager and have no idea how to be. But if Pearson kept Howard on for another year I really wouldnt be too disappointed if he put in the effort he has done at the end of this year. I have been one of Howards biggest critics (I just cannot stand his uninterested look and the way he complains so much) but the last few games of the season and before his silly, silly red card (which cost us dearly) he was fantastic. Arguably a shout for our MotM against Cardiff too. Very impressive.

Oakley has to go surely? And it is so frustrating to see the kind of effort and commitment DJ Campbell will put in for Blackpool, yet wont for us. Hopefully we can finally lose him in the summer.

Darren Ambrose would be a great signing, but can you really see that happening?

What would the chances of getting someone like Ebanks-Blake that hasnt hit it of at all in the PL? Maybe on loan to start to get him first team matches? How about james Beattie? :crylaugh:

Another name that springs to mind is Billy Paynter from swindon

It's pretty pointless picking out specific targets because so very few of them ever materialise. Realistically we're going to be looking at another year of relatively low budget signings (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) and the loan market. I'd probably expect one decent money signing (such as Wellens last summer), probably a striker to replace Waghorn who is almost guaranteed not to be with us next year.
