Alexikokopops Posted 3 June 2010 Posted 3 June 2010 If that £3million is correct then Liverpool have massively got away with it. He's got 4 years left on his contract hasn't he? Yeah, he signed a five year extension last July. I think the price of cancelling that was put at £17 million. Edit: Just had a look at the BBC article and it's £16 million
lou Posted 3 June 2010 Posted 3 June 2010 I wouldn't say he failed. Champions League Winners 04/05 FA Cup Winners 05/06 Champions League Finalists 06/07 League Runners Up 08/09 Plus a Super Cup and Community Shield. And he signed Torres. The board obviously think hes failed, personally I couldnt give a monkeys about Liverpool one way or another. Finishing 7th in the Premiership is hardly a roaring success for a team of that stature and with the amount of money being spent. Theyre only in Europe next season because of Pompey being skint and getting ousted arent they?
Guest Bilo Posted 3 June 2010 Posted 3 June 2010 Martin O'Neill to replace him perhaps? There have been rumours about him being unsettled at Villa Park and he may fancy going to Anfield.
Edmund Posted 3 June 2010 Posted 3 June 2010 If that £3million is correct then Liverpool have massively got away with it. He's got 4 years left on his contract hasn't he? It most probably has something to do with this http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1280517/UAE-try-lure-Rafa-Benitez-5m-offer-quit-Liverpool.html
AyewJoking Posted 3 June 2010 Posted 3 June 2010 Will be a miracle if Gerrard and Torres are there next season.
Fox92 Posted 3 June 2010 Posted 3 June 2010 I think it was time he left. He has spent so much money and gained so little. Players like Lucas and Ryan Babel have never been Liverpool players. The teams got to have more scousers in though. Gerrard has been carrying the club for so long now. Feel so sorry for Stevie Gerrard as well, for a sensational player he's not going to win the trophy he wants so bad to complete the collection.

Players like Babel and Lucas have been horribly mis-managed, more like. Neither are bad players, Benitez just didn't have a clue. Had Babel moved somewhere else from Ajax, he'd be the shit by now.
C-man Posted 3 June 2010 Posted 3 June 2010 So basically 2 major trophies in 6 and a bit years spending over 200 million quid, i cant doubt that his tactical nouse won Liverpool the champions league but his domestic record isn't the best. Of the squad he leaves only Gerrard, Torres, Reina and Mascarano look like top premiership players. If Hiddink comes in id expect him to get Liverpool a lot closer to the honours they demand. Ripped this from a Liverpool fan on SUSD. Here's the full list of players he's signed since he's been at the club (please read the summary below): 2004/05 £2m - Josemi: peanuts and was moved on in a swap for Kromkamp 18 months later £1.5m - Antonio Nunez: part of the Michael Owen deal and filled a gap for a while. Peanuts. £10.7m - Xabi Alonso: Massive success and sold for £30m+ in the summer when he wanted to leave £6m - Luis Garcia: Massive success and sold to Athletico Madrid for £4m Free - Pelligrino: Stop gap that allowed us to rest Sami for league games, benefitting us massively in Istanbul. Now on the coaching staff. £6.3m - Fernando Morientes: Pretty much everyone made up when we signed him, top class, but never settled. Sold for £3m to Valencia. £1m - Scott Carson: One the most highly rated young keepers around. Lost out through injury and signing of Reina when Dudek left the club. Sold for £3.25m. Total bought: £27.5m Free - Marcus Babbel: Released to Stuttgart at the end of his career. £2.5m - Danny Murphy: Xabi Alonso signed to fill the role Murphy had in the side £8.5m - Michael Owen: Wouldn't sign a new contract and sold before he left on a free. He's done nothing since that is a masterstroke with hindsight. Free - Stephane Henchoz: Released to Celtic at the end of his career Total sold: £11m A total of £16.5m net spend in his first year at the club, with the vast majority of that being spent on Xabi Alonso. 2004/05 net spend: £16.5m 2005/06 £240,000 - Antonio Barragan: Kid for the future. Sold for £675,000 to Deportivo a year later. Free - Boudewijn Zenden: Signed for nothing and released for nothing. Did a job for us. £6m - Pepe Reina: In the top 3 or 4 keepers in the world now and still young. One of Rafa's best signings. £5.6m - Momo Sissoko: Brilliant for a few years, had that eye injury and sold to Juventus when his form dipped for £8.2m. Replaced by Mascherano. £7m - Peter Crouch: One signing I did question but proved to be a great bit of business. Turned him from a laughing stock into an international. Sold for £11m. Unkown - Miki Roque: Kid bought for peanuts. Sold again for an unknown amount. £150,000 - Jack Hobbs: Highly rated 16yr old signed from Lincoln. Didn't progress as hoped and sold to Leicester for a reported £1.5m, although figure not confirmed. £190,000 Besian Idrizaj: No idea who he is £1.5m - Mark Gonzales: Cheap player to provide back up for the left wing. Sold for £3.5m to Real Betis. Exchange - Paul Anderson: Swapped for John Welsh. Sold for £250,000. Exchange - Jan Kromkamp: Swapped for Josemi. Later sold for £1.75m £5.8m - Daniel Agger: Blighted by injuries but potentially top class and great signing for the money. £250,000 - David Martin: Young reserve keeper Free - Robbie Fowler: Pay as you play deal and no risk involved. Scored a few goals. Released in the summer. Total bought: £26.73 Free - Vladimir Smicer: Out of contract and released. Played a small part in Istanbul. £3.5m - El Hadji Diouf: The best £3.5m Rafa has ever recieved. Free - Pellegrino: Filled the gap in the last 5 months of the previous season, not good enough and released. £2m - Alou Diarra: Sold for £2m. One of Houllier's buys. £2m - Antonio Nunez: Bought for £1.5m and now sold for £2m when didn't work out. £6.5m - Milan Baros: A Houllier signing sold at a profit. He's done nothing since. Exchange - John Welsh: Swapped for Paul Anderson Exchange - Josemi: Swapped for Kronkamp. Total sold: £14m 2005/06 net spend: £12.73m 2006/07 £6m - Craig Bellamy: Good signing and later sold for £7.5m to fund Torres deal. £2m - Gabriel Palletta: Played a few league cup games, not good enough and sold for £1.2m Free - Fabio Aurelio: Very injury prone but a good player when fit. Great signing for nothing. £6.7m - Jermaine Pennant: Second choice after missing out on Alves. Ran his contract down and released. Attitude stank. £9m - Dirk Kuyt: Has his critics, but has been brilliant for the money. 15 goals last season from wide and vital to the way we play. Ultimate pro. Great signing. £200,000 - Nabil El Zhar: Few cameos last season and improving. Injured now. Promising still. Peanuts. £750,000 - Astrit Ajdarevic: No idea who he is, and released on a free to Leicester. Loan - Daniele Padelli: Reserve keeper, made one appearance and never seen again. Undisclosed - Jordy Brouwer: Young reserve. £2.5m - Alvaro Arbeloa: Bargain signing, great service for a few years and sold for £3.5m when running his contract down. Loan - Javier Mascherano: Rescued from West Ham, now one of the best defensive midfielders in the world and will probably be sold to Barca this summer for a massive profit. Paid £18.6m for him a year later at end of loan deal. Total bought: £27.15m £200,000 - Zak Whitbread: Youngster Undisclosed - Bruno Cheyrou: Houllier flopped, sold for a reported £1.5m. £3m - Fernando Morientes: Didn't work out. Cut his losses. Not good enough and released. £1.75m - Jan Kromkamp: Nunez bought for £2m, swapped for him, who then sold for £1.75m. Stop gaps at minimal expense. £525,000 - Darren Potter: Acadamy lad, not good enough and robbery getting that much for him. £1.5m - Steven Warnock: Probably sold to cheap and looks a mistake with hindsight. Good squad player. Free - Salif Diao: The clearout of Houllier's flops continues. Total sold: £10.15m 2006/07 net spend: £17m 2007/08 £5m - Lucas Leiva: Brazilian player of the year when signed. Total sold: £36.75m 2009/10 net spend: £10,000 Total Players Bought: £228,976,000 Total Players Sold: £145,100,000 Total Net Spend: £83,876,000 So, that’s a total spend of just over £83m in 5 years at the club. An average of £16.6m a year. The vast majority of his signings have been sold at profit, or if still at the club, are worth a lot more than we paid for them. Exceptions being Babel and Dossena, but we’ll still get decent fees for them when sold as they’re full internationals. A lot of the signings above have been stepping stones in rebuilding the squad, gradually improving it by replacing players with better ones. Our league positions over the past 5 years and the improvement in our league positions and points totals show the progression. 2004/05: Finished 5th – 58 pts 2005/06: Finished 3rd – 82 pts 2006/07: Finished 3rd – 68 pts 2007/08: Finished 4th – 76 pts 2008/09: Finished 2nd – 86 pts Is it any coincidence that the progression seems to have stopped this summer? Look at the transfer activity above for this year and it might explain why. Look at our net spend over the past 2 years! We have a wage bill that is the 5th highest in the league. We can’t afford to pay players £70,000 to be sat on the bench like United and Chelsea can. Obviously loads of information there but the main points are his net spend in 6 seasons is less than O'Neill at Villa in 4 seasons, and look at the net spend last summer which halted the 'progress'. No excuses for such a poor season, 7th is dreadful, but it's understandable-ish when you look at the figures.
Alexikokopops Posted 3 June 2010 Posted 3 June 2010 Ripped this from a Liverpool fan on SUSD. No excuses for such a poor season, 7th is dreadful, but it's understandable-ish when you look at the figures. You can't really say his poor "net spend" halted the process. I'm pretty sure Man Utd's net spend was negative, and they only dropped one place, rather than five. So in response to his closing statement, I think yes, it is a coincidence that they did shit when the net spend dropped. I think the reason they did shit has more to do with selling Xabi Alonso (which had to happen) and replacing him with a player who has made about 3 appearances over the past ten season because he's always bloody injured.
purpleronnie Posted 3 June 2010 Posted 3 June 2010 Agreed losing Alonso was a massive blow, gerrard looks half the player without alonso along side.

Looks like Benitez wrote that himself, some of the statements are laughable. 6 years down the line and arguabally a worse squad now than when he arrived and furthur away from the holy grail than ever
jonthefox Posted 3 June 2010 Posted 3 June 2010 Martin O'Neill to replace him perhaps? There have been rumours about him being unsettled at Villa Park and he may fancy going to Anfield. most of the pool boards are giving a huge thumbs down to mon.

leicesterfox86 Posted 4 June 2010 Posted 4 June 2010 Rafa won a couple of trophies with other people's players, but then proceeded to take the squad apart. As for who will replace him, this Liverpool manager football blogpoints out that O'Neill is favourite, but I can't see him going with all the uncertainty over the owners, I wonder what Joe Kinnear is up to... Seems like his kind of gig.

The Doctor Posted 4 June 2010 Posted 4 June 2010 Dammit, we need to get Spearing on the cheap before he is out of the door.... Makes sense though Liverpool has become a two man team, which on most days are duller than dull and nowhere near a premiership title. pretty harsh on Mascherano, Kuyt and Reina that. Ripped this from a Liverpool fan on SUSD. Jay Posted 5 June 2010 Posted 5 June 2010 you can look at the figures all you want fact is Rafa spent £230million in 6 years and ended up selling half of them for less than he paid, some after making little impact, buying the wrong players for the club You only need to look at Liverpools first team squad to see why he failed, to many players not good enough, players like N'gog, El Zahr and loads of randoms you have never head of. The have a starting 11, maybe 5 subs and that's it, nobody pushing for a first team spot. I heard something that summed up his mentality last season, losing away at stoke, makes 3subs and none of them forwards. Did well at the start like everything though sometimes you need to freshen things up as things go stale, obviously Freguson is a different and that's part of his brilliance
FoxyPV Posted 5 June 2010 Posted 5 June 2010 According to SSN Erikssen (spelling?) has come out and said he's a lifelong Liverpool fan and is considering his options after the WC.
Super_horns Posted 8 June 2010 Posted 8 June 2010 Not bad for Mr Benitez... Leave a club in crisis on and off the pitch to join the current champions of Italy and Europe along with a nice pay-off!
AyewJoking Posted 9 June 2010 Posted 9 June 2010 Its like getting sacked from quik save and landing store supervisor at Harrods. Football is a crazy game. How on earth do Inter expect this man to defend the Champions League title?
Uncle Albert Posted 10 June 2010 Posted 10 June 2010 Either Hughes or Hodgson would be good if you ask me, but Hughes being Man United, some aren't too keen. Saying that, he was liked by Man City fans during his tenure there. It'll be interesting to see who they get, and whether people will turn it down due to what appears to be a massive lack of funds. Hughes is never going to get a job at Anfeild mate, not with his United and Everton connections, they would never accept him. I heard something that summed up his mentality last season, losing away at stoke, makes 3subs and none of them forwards. Well you clearly heard wrong, not sticking up for Rafa and his tactics but Liverpool were winning that game 1-0 and conceded in the final minute, so bringing on players that weren't forwards would make sense. --------- Anyway we can look at Rafa's time at Liverpool through his spending of money but like them figures suggest he only actually spent £83 million on players when taking into account the players that have left and the money they have brought in, that isnt as bad as we suggest. Rafa has no excuses though, for a club like Liverpool after the promise they had after 08/09 to the follow that up and finish 7th is unacceptable, this last year was meant to be Liverpool's year but the signing of Aquilani to replace Alonso didnt go the way Rafa wanted, it so easily could of been different if Aquilani got fit and could play like he done in Italy because there was only two replacements to the Liverpool team this year that werent apart of the 08/09 team.. They were Johnson coming in for Arbeloa and Aquilani for Alonso, Johnson for Arbeloa is a better replacement and the Aquilani unfortunetly didnt go the way they wanted and with Torres being out for most of the season and Rafa not bringing in another quality striker, then it was always going to be hard. I think Liverpool should give the job to Kenny Dalglish until they can get rid of the Yanks and bring in new owners, who can then bring in their own manager and give him suitable funds to turn Liverpool back around, all the big managers will take notice at the Liverpool job because its the third biggest job in England behind the National job and United job, so all the managers will take along think about ruling it out.
