I thought you'd never ask.

I really do love that. It's always a good one to boom out whenever another person bleats on about "if only Giggs had played for England, blah blah blah".

This Giggs thing has always puzzled me.

Sorry for being a total 'tard - I'm a big Giggs fan but I have never understood why he couldn't play for England.

Surely he would have qualified for England on residency grounds?

Residency laws didn't exist back then.

And I'm pretty sure there's an agreement between the home nations authorities to not poach players anyway, I could have dreampt that but I'm sure it's something I've read.

Which makes sense as it never really happens. I mean as much as I take the piss with Michael Owen, while his parents were living in Wales and he was raised in Wales, they themselves were an English family and he was born over the boarder in Cheshire.

And he's the only real, modern example. We knick a lot of your rejects but I think that's generally a gimme.

i think so, i know there's an arrangement that only those born in say ireland or with grandparents from ireland can represent ireland and the same goes for england, scotland and wales.

No team has ever scored 7 goals away from home, until today at Zilina, where Marseille now hold that record.

Chelsea dominating now, too.

Ok, so to clarify, had Giggs not played for Wales at 17, ultimately he could have represented England?

As regards poaching, there is an agreement in place. Obviously as British citizens, there's a potential legal argument there that you can be eligible all 4 teams. This is something Levein sought to exploit with Shola Ameobi, but was warned off by the FA and FIFA.

Given that Giggs has been in England since his early teens, there's certainly a case for him being different to the likes of Ameobi, who has, to my knowledge, no links whatsoever to Scotland.

Had he never, ever, ever played for Wales then yes. But that's ridiculous - it's hardly like any player would have refused to play for their own country in the vague hope that one day the laws would change.

No way would the FAW have ever given that up. But you're also making the classic, arrogant English mistake and assuming Giggs would have done that.

Giggs has always maintained that he's incredibly proud of both his black-white mixed-race heritage and being Welsh and I don't see any reason to disbelieve that.

Steady on, I'm not spoiling for an argument. I'm just trying to understand it.

Anyone would think you had small country syndrome.

I'm not giving you an argument, just laying out how it is.

You'll forgive me if this gets a trifle repetitive. This comes up once about every six months.

All you really need to know is he didn't play for England, couldn't play for England and wouldn't play for England.

C'mon Basle, without three key players (Streller, Huggel and Chipperfield), but 1-0 up and dominating the home tier against Cluj up to this point.

Still hoping for Gayern to assist a little bit result-wise.

The Swiss FCB can still make it past the group stage...

EDIT: Munich 2-0 up already.blink.gif Get in!!chant.gif

i did them separately (bummer) and only 50p each. Zelina were 1/18 i think, which was crazy i thought, and bayern were 1/4 i think.
