He gave Villa so much stability, success and a glimpse of European competitions - surely the best manager they've ever had?

(Apart from not winning a title in four years, that is)

Senseless decision - unless he couldn't bare working for them no more.

All seeeeeems pretty amicable what with quotes from MON on the Villa OS and him saying he'll be assisting with the handover...

Sounds like he was told he would not get any of the Milner cash to spend, and decided he could not take them any further,

I think the bloke who won the European Cup with Villa will have something to say about that lol

He was a good manager for Villa, we'll see how good he was this season.

Didn't see that one coming, thought he was perfectly settled in there. Does seem a fairly amicable split. Really curious to know where MON will go and who'll replace him there. Though I'll be astonished if anyone else gets them closer than to the top four than he did.

From the quotes on the bbc report it does not sound like he left under a cloud. Just wonder if there is something else involved. The reason why he left Celtic was because his wife had cancer. I hope that this is not the reason again. Strange one.

Martin O'Neill resigns as Aston Villa manager

Martin O'Neill

O'Neill led Villa to sixth in the Premier League last season

Martin O'Neill has resigned as Aston Villa manager with immediate effect.

Kevin MacDonald has been appointed caretaker boss while no reason has been given for O'Neill's decision to leave after four years in the job.

MacDonald will prepare the side for their Premier League opener against West Ham on Saturday.

O'Neill, appointed in 2006, said: "I have enjoyed my time at Aston Villa immensely. It's obviously a wrench to be leaving such a magnificent club."

More to follow.

Very strange.

Can only presume he's been pissed about by the board.

Triumphant return for Martin O'God in a few months? No?.....fair enough.

O'Neill on the whole got treated like shit by the Villa fans. Unbelievable really, considering where they were when he came in.

Glad he's left them, ungrateful twats.

Good. Villa really do think they're big time at the moment, back to where they belong please mid-table nobodies. Mon is much better than them.
