maccfox Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 Theres 3 kids aswell who were in c2, had these little blue vuvuzela things. Stewards didn't confiscate them or anything! Probably cos they bought em in the club shop!! why ban them then continue selling em?
Guest Mickyblueeyes Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 Moreno in the defensive midfield role would be class. He seemed like one of those players who could do the job at CB but would dictate play from the DM. Defensively, would like to see some experience. Just to offer some guidance to you Jack/Vitor/Morrison. Going forward, we are going to be good watch this year. Lot to be positive about!
Yojoe36 Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 Or maybe they won't be in it until the third round. Whoops. 0_o
Yojoe36 Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 It was a group of kids over in the left corner of the west stand. Looked like a football team who had been given a bunch of tickets or something. They were all about 8 years old and I think they were something to do with Macclesfield because they all jumped up when they scored their third. Might be wrong though because they didn't seem to celebrate their other 2 goals. They all had horns which did look distinctly like vuvuzelas. Pretty annoying whatever they were! well whoever they were people weren't happy. People were shouting shut up and stuff but they did it even louder. If it's like that on Saturday, then i'm making a formal complaint cause I ain't listening to that for 23 games at home, or whatever how many home games there is. I sit in j1 so it might not be too much of a problem
MC Prussian Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 ? How on earth can you blame it on them? First goal Hobbs heads the ball out of Logan's hand to concede a corner and then gets beaten in the air from the resulting corner for their first. He then trips over the ball which leads directly to their third goal. How is that down to Kennedy and Moreno? Come on Alexei, as somebody who wasn't there tonight it's a bit difficult to blame it on those two. Moreno had a solid debut and I don't think put a foot wrong. Kennedy was not convincing but it was his home debut at a much bigger club than he's used to, and the nerves probably hit him a little bit. He wasn't directly at fault for any of the goals, either. I'm not denying that I wasn't at the match. What I meant by above statement (or the "inexperience" part) was that Moreno was played out of position (I heard he's much more a defensive midfielder rather than a centre-back). Both him and Kennedy need more games to get into a flow - although I can't see Kennedy being more than just a back-up for Berner (at the moment). And who knows how long Moreno will be out. No sour grapes at all here - I know we had to rest some of the key players (injuries and/or preparation for the Boro matchup). Maybe "blame" was too strong an expression, after all. It makes me wonder as well why Hobbs and Morrison are having such a hard time reproducing their performances from last season. I always thought the "new, continental" passing game brought in by Sousa was more of a challenge for the midfielders and strikers, not the defense. Maybe it's the lack of pre-season games in order to get to know each other?
CosbehFox Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 Moreno looked very good IMO. Just did all the simple things. Hobbs for some reason has lost all confidence and can barely trap a ball. Zonal marking appears to be the issue but the defensive performance was different to Palsce as these goals were isolated (poor marking and Hobbs losing the ball). As Fez as well the new formation leaves us very open to counter act and huge gaps in the middle. There was times where we had five players on the edge of the box.
Bert Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 I think it's no coincidence that pearson was a defender himself and now he's left we're looking shaky.
Nick Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 I think it's no coincidence that pearson was a defender himself and now he's left we're looking shaky. I think thats right Bert, hopefully when the players are a bit fitter they'll track back more quickly. Is it the case that we didn't really play zonal marking last season, I'm not buying in to the idea it was all man to man!? Also, I think we'll miss elements of the 'departed bald prejudice mad-mans' game - he wasn't quick but he was steady, won headers and his distribution wasn't bad (even though he either brought a runner down or watched him go by......) hopefully this back line will settle in their positions once they actually own them - Hobbs should play where he did last year - round pegs round holes please. I just can't believe Neilsen...... the lads came back from Palace and said he was nigh on motm........ but two consecutive above competent performances - good for Robbie.
ThurnbyLodgeFox Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 bit tense from what i could work out. i am on holiday and couldnt go to the game. well done to the lads and better news FOREST, DERBY AND COVENTRY ARE OUT!!!!!!!
breadandcheese Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 The defensive errors so far this season are partly down to a wide-open formation with only one defensively-minded midfielder (and one whose legs seemed to have gone last season, at that) and partly poor decision-making from Hobbs, Morrison and Kennedy. I agree. We have two wingers who want to push up, fullbacks who want to bomb forward, so we look very exposed on the counter. We've now shipped in 6 goals in 2 games. That is an awful record. So I think the shape and balance of the team needs to be addressed. Offensively, we created chances (although it was against lower league opposition) and probably should have hit double figures. The amount of chances we squandered was criminal and against the better teams in the championship, we will not get that many chances. All in all, we have a lot of work to do, and on the evidence of the last two games, we won't finish as high as last season because of our defensive frailities.
markbsac Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 Theres 3 kids aswell who were in c2, had these little blue vuvuzela things. Stewards didn't confiscate them or anything! Dicks. Or screaming 'Gallagher!!' whenever Oakley, Fryatt, Wellens, or even Logan touch the ball. no but those pathetic stewards came all the way up to the back to make 2 people sit down....lets see if they make the boro fans sit down on saturday....the club really needs to get a grip
Babylon Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 A switch from man to zonal marking. A more offensive style of play. Defensive line ups that haven't played together. 4 new defenders in the new squad. Hardly a surprise we're looking a bit unsure at the back, I'm sure given time people will get use to the new way.

Agreed... One big thought though, while we are adapting to the new style/system a bit more solidity in the middle of the park would not go amiss. Playing a wide open 4-4-2 with a back 4 barely on speaking terms may not be the the most sensible thing at this stage... One good thing though, the library card has been put away, don;t expect to need it in the near future...

Ric Flair Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 One of the big problems is no one looks comfortable in the left CB position least of all Hobbs. He started there tonight but was soon swapped with Moreno but once Morrison came on back he went and to be frank his bloody useless in that position. Vitor is a right sided player so we have no one other than Tunchev who can fill that position. Oh and I felt stupid sat there with my book It's an important thing you touch upon here, however when Brown didn't play there last season and we had Hobbs and Morrison together they seemed to be assured. The defensive problems are a minor concern for me right now, it's been two games and ok they've looked scary, but at the same time if we had gone 2 games where we'd missed a hatful of chances and hadn't scored i'm sure people would be telling us all not to panic and that the players had shown in the past they can score. Likewise Hobbs, Morrison, Berner and Weale have shown that they can be part of a solid unit at the back. Tie that in with Sousa's record at Swansea and there's every reason to think it's only a matter of time before we eradicate these sloppy errors. With a fully fit squad to choose from, one or two new additions and some momentum and I think we'll be flying.

We look way more impressive as an attacking side than I can remember, ok it's still early season but I can see Thracian's 100 goal target coming under threat... For once we appear to have some talent, even better it appears we are giving it a chance which hardly ever happened under NFP. Sure there are issues but they are primarily organisational and fitness related and can be fixed... Brown was a wholehearted yet very limited footballer. The fact that, one or two games apart, the Hobbs/Brown pairing looked more solid than the Morrison/Hobbs setup left me feeling slightly uneasy, I really expected Morrison/Hobbs to come good and when they were not quite as impressive as I thought I gave them the benefit of the doubt. It appears that I may have been wrong to do so...
Shrenchel Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 Stoke away next then please. Surely impossible as we'll both be seeded?
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 Surely impossible as we'll both be seeded? I didnt think the second round draw was seeded? On a different note, was anyone sat to towards the corner near the family stand where those kids had a load of horns? Did everyones head in, no point banning the vuvezela if they are allowed in.
Shrenchel Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 Seeded: Everton, Birmingham, BLACKBURN ROVERS, Stoke, Fulham, Sunderland, Bolton, Wolves, Wigan, West Ham, Newcastle, West Brom, Blackpool, BURNLEY, Hull, Portsmouth, Leicester, Swansea, Middlesbrough, Ipswich, Watford, Preston, Cardiff*, Sheffield United*, Reading*. Unseeded: Leeds, Millwall, Sheffield Wednesday, Peterborough, Huddersfield, Southampton, Colchester, Brentford, MK Dons, Rochdale, Bradford, Crewe, ACCRINGTON STANLEY, Morecambe, Northampton, Oxford, Notts County, Port Vale, Shrewsbury, Southend, Leyton Orient, Tranmere, S****horpe*, Crystal Palace*, Norwich*. * Cardiff, Sheffield United and Reading will be seeded if they win their first-round ties tonight against Burton, Hartlepool and Torquay respectively. If they lose, S****horpe, Crystal Palace and Norwich are likely to replace them as seeds. Millwall, Notts County, Brentford or Morcambe away will do.
Tommeh Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 Ah cock, really wish they'd do away with seedings. Breantford, Southend or Orient away is the dream for me.
Mikey Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 Game was a decent spectacle. As been pointed out the defence looked shaky, especially Hobbs. Thought Moreno, Wellens and Big Steve were the standout players. N'Guessan was his normal self, shit one minute, unplayable the next. If he can bring consistency into his game he'll be one hell of a player imo. Happy to see Fryatt on the scoresheet, hopefully give him some confidence. Anybody else see DJ walk straight off the pitch at the end? Either a lame home tie again, or Accy Stanley or Orient away.
Corky Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 Well that was close, far closer than it needed to be at 3-1. Some of the attacking play was excellent, created many chances and looked very assured on the ball. As at Palace though, the defence looks very unsteady, with Hobbs, very surprisingly, being the main culprit last night. Moreno seems a very competent player, both in defence and midfield. Fryatt and Howard linked well throughout the game, Fryatt's first goal was superb and Wellens' finish was emphatic. Good to see Robbie Neilson get a goal, hope that boosts his confidence. Fair play to Macclesfield, they came to play and put us under pressure, and they certainly did. The goals we gave away were poor, and I'm not a fan of bringing everyone back to defend at corners. All-in-all very much worth the £12, saw plenty of goals (too many in our net for my liking) and we're through, but Sousa needs to work on the defence pretty swiftly because we've conceded some soft goals already this season.
Houdini Logic Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 Stoke away next then please. Can't wait for this day to come
Joe. Posted 11 August 2010 Posted 11 August 2010 Orient away would go down nicely. Not been there before and living with an Orient fan next year...
