Limited Options for Martin O'Neill as He Hungers for Return to Management0

John Percy

It was a departure that polarised opinion and he appears to have gone to ground ever since - so what next for Martin O'Neill?

His surprise exit from Villa Park barely days before the start of the season was branded spiteful and self-centred, yet his reputation as a top flight manager remains largely undamaged.

The killing fields of the Premier League have not yet reached their harvest but with chairmen traditionally likely to become more twitchy during a winter of discontent, O'Neill's name will surely be one of the first to emerge when the interview process starts.

But after leading Villa to three successive top six finishes and a Carling Cup Final last season, where is there to go for the Ulsterman?

Close associates of the 58-year-old have revealed he is "desperate" to return to the front line as swiftly as possible, with his frustration towards the end of his tenure at Villa leaving his desire to work again undimmed.

In his final months he appeared jaded and irritable, with the usual zest and fire burning less brightly. But he clearly has unfinished business in the rarefied atmosphere of this unforgiving division.

After Villa, however, there aren't many bigger clubs that will become available. Liverpool opted for Roy Hodgson in the summer while Manchester City will surely go for a more stellar appointment, should they run out of patience with Roberto Mancini. Outside of maybe Everton, Sunderland and Newcastle, should those posts become available, the other possible clubs to need new managers would be dismissed as a retrogade step for O'Neill.

And doubts remain over whether he would able to be exert such influence again. He was the master of all he surveyed at Villa and handed almost complete power before Randy Lerner opted for a change in direction. Whether he would be allowed such a free rein again is debatable.

Some critics would argue that he doesn't deserve another 'big' job. O'Neill has always relied on support from friends in the media but actually has more detractors than you would believe, particularly now in the West Midlands.

There were many excellent signings during his four years but there are some that remain under scrutiny - Habib Beye, Zat Knight, Nicky Shorey, Marlon Harewood anyone? His rigid determination to avoid shuffling his team ultimately led to burn-out from a starting XI that was virtually cast in stone and the subsequent late collapse two seasons running.

There weren't many tears shed by the fringe players when he left in August while it required Kevin MacDonald's brief spell as caretaker manager to properly introduce the undoubted talent that is Marc Albrighton.

For any club needing a kick up the backside, though, O'Neill remains one of the best managers available. It is understood that his former club Leicester City have him under consideration to make a sensational return ten years after his departure to Celtic - but would a season of hard slog in the Championship represent a challenge at this stage in his career?

O'Neill is nothing but astute and will be doing his homework now as he prepares for a return. He may have to wait a while longer for a window of opportunity but we haven't seen the last of the touchline prowler just yet.

wow, feel a bit sorry for him after that article- bit harsh isnt it? though i guess chairmen dont like a manager who has his own opinion any more. lets just hope he's 'desperate' enough to come back here then!! :)

From the Gurdian.co.uk

This broadsheet doesn't have a reputaion of making up stories does it? I remember they were one of the first to report the Thai takeover.

Martin O'Neill to Leicester City?

Martin O'Neill will be asked to return to Leicester if Paulo Sousa doesn't conjure a couple of decent results soon, even though the chairman Milan Mandaric insists "we have a long term plan and Paulo's part of it".

The Guardian don't print bull, but this is taken from the Rumor Mill column which is just a summary of all the Rumours being reported by other news outlets.

Breaking News!!

Lionel Messi has been linked with a move to Leicester City, The New multi millionaire owners which no one knows anything about have made a sensational move for him after signing Martin O'Neil as their new manager being the successor of Paulo Sousa. After signing Roque Santa Cruz this week aspirations were high for Leicester and this signing has truely lived up to the hype.

DREAMLAND to think MON would come back here. I actually seriously doubt he would even if we were bottom of the Prem, let alone bottom of the Championship.

MON is one of the best British managers in the game. He will be a candidate for England in 2 years time no doubt.

I really don't think our owners are actually that rich either. Unless the other mystery investor is Billionaire, which is doubtful, as our known investor is worth 120million, which is pocket change in Football these days.

The only reason I could see MON coming back would be out of pure boredom on his part and probably knowing he could take a decent squad of players on a good run.

I think he will see it as a backwards move though and the next Prem job that arises will have his name all over it.

In summary, he is far too good for us these days. Not a chance in hell. Dam shame!!!

yep, have to agree. when MoN came to us we were a nothing team, and let's face it, he was hardly high profile. Things have changed now, and I think city is a zillion miles away from where he wants to be, but it irritates the shit out of me to hear Forest fans blab on constantly about how he is going back to Forest. We need to look at ourselves and have to admit we arn't a 'big club' and right now we are shrinking rapidly. he could use the city job as an exercise to get us promoted ( ok, im struggling to keep a straight face) but MoN needs a club which operates under HIS terms, HIS methods and HIS philosophies. that said, unless he buys himself a club to manage, no chariman on earth would ever ever give a manager that level of autonomy.

now ask yourselves..would the Asian consortium or Mandaric allow MoN 100% say in what he wants for the club? I don't think so...

Wont happen but nothing wrong with abit of wishful thinking eh?

True!! If he takes over at Forest, I will cry!!! I would say they have .00000001% more chance than us

What I find funny is that O'Neil never forgave the fans for getting on his back after such a short space of time when he started here, and now 90% of the same fans are wanting to get rid of the current manager and get a replacement in (preferably him). Even if he'd consider coming back to Leicester for one second (which I don't believe he would), I'm pretty sure the sight of the same fans baying for blood again after 8 games would put him off big time.

I don't think that would happen. But at the same time, i don't think MoN could turn around things either, the game has changed so much since he was here. MoN is a manager that wants total control of where and how he works with zero interference from front office.

the asian mafia and Mandaric would never ever ever allow that to happen.

Spot on.

I don't think anyone would get on his back if he came back, he's got a status that is unbreakable around here.

Saying that there's more chance of me shitting out a bag of gold after this post, I'm touching cloth here guys.

Theres obviously a very small chance though, clearly made greater if he is still without a club and Sousa ends up going.

There would be no harm in the new owners or MM just giving him a cheeky phone call then

What influence do you think he has?

They probably wouldn't, I can just imagine him sitting there though thinking, 'they haven't changed, I can't be arsed with those tossers'.

Obviously this is total crap , but we can dream . At least we would have a team that wouldn't give up .Any team of O'neills run themselves into the ground for hm . I remember when he signed Claridge , i thought why sign him he is useless and Cottee I thought was a player who was past it . How wrong was I . The thing about O'neill which he proved at Leicester is he can buy players who we have either never heard of or who we wouldn't even consider and turn them into hard working good footballers , he instills confidence in players . I think he proved more at Leicester than anywhere else that the man is a top notch manager who can work on a shoestring . At Celtic and Villa he had a substantial amount of money so coud buy established players , At Leicester he had virtually sod all and this is where he proved that himself , his coaches and scouting system were first class .

Anyway I am going to dream a little more

He's got bills to pay and a desire to work satisfy.

He also has a reputation and would be in with a shout of landing virtually any Premiership job, if it came up.

I would suspect he's sat at home thinking Liverpool look ropy and might want rid of Hodgson (unlikely), Redknapp has always said he wants the England job so Spurs could possibly come up in the next couple of years if Capello stumbles, Moyes isn't covering himself in glory this season and Ferguson won't go on for ever. The likes of Wigan, West Ham, Birmingham, Bolton and Newcastle are all reasonably attractive and would treat O'Neill like a God if they got rid of their current managers.

MARTIN O'NEILL WILL NEVER EVER RETURN TO LEICESTER, HE DID HIS PART NOW HE HAS NOTHING TO PROVE AT THIS CLUB.

There's really no need to shout it out though however frustrated you may feel.

No one would want the Liverpool job, they are going one way and that is down.

Redknapp will never get the England job. Wigan would not appeal and the others you mention are all very happy with their current managers.

He needs a job, while I am 99.9% sure he will never come here Mandaric has the Mirror as his mouthpiece.
