Thailand Friendly

We're not Chelsea or Manchester United, the Thai people won't care about a team bottom of the second tier of English football.

I agree chelsea man utd liverpool arsenal all big out there, who will want a city shirt with an unknown name on , when all they know is rooney drogba etc...

plus they should be here training for next game not jetting off and then the excuse of jet lag will be after another defeat !!!!

Oh so exposing and hopefully showcasing our team to a country of 65 million people is a waste of time? Good business more like. Our season is already a write off; we stay up now and it's a grand job so we might as well make some decent baht.

so it is a pre-season friendly after all!!!!

Come on now. "Showcasing our team to a country of 65 million people". You do realise how ridiculous that comment is, right?

I stand by what I've said all along. This is a naive idea from owners that think the concept of an "English football team" has the same appeal to the Thai market regardless of who that team actually is.

Above all this is not in the interests of the team. There'a a time and a place to do things like this, and during a horrendous start to a season is not it.

The owners have already demonstrated their ineptitude at running a football club by getting rid of Pearson. Why anyone trusts them with this idea is beyond me.

That just confirms what to me (and others like Tilley) seems pretty obvious.

Oh well, I never said it would succeed. I also said 'hopefully showcasing'. This was before the Portsmouth game when morale and pride was a bit higher. To the people who think they can say for sure that Thai people won't be interested, your idea of that is just as subjective as mine.

True. Also the people who arranged this game are Thai, their local knowledge is probably better than anyone's on here.

This one's on Thai TV apparently.

Is it accessible from our country do you know? LCFC people could be there to watch record match/comment via radio? :dunno:

Probably not anyway

Do a quick search on the net, there's no enthusiasm for the game at all from the locals.

The stuff about merchandise can easily be dismissed too. Most Thais can't afford a real shirt, it's fakes which are seen throughout the country. The clubs what tour make money off the sponsorship and the related TV deals.

From what the Swansea fans are saying Sousa will be desperate to keep his job for this trip just for the ladyboys!

By that token can most Thais afford the internet? Who are the people posting on the message boards and blogs about the game? Do they wear fake shirts or real ones?

I wouldn't say something like Foxestalk is that representative of City fans in general. All I'm clinging on to is the hope that this isn't a waste of time basically :dunno:

I warn you all in advance, I'm going to go on a little rant here...

To be honest, I will trust the owners' judgement on this in business terms. They are successful businessmen and know how to market a product. Taking us to Thailand will probably drum up a bit more interest in the club over there and may even open up new merchandising opportunities. But that is besides the point for me. The thing that really annoys me about this trip is that it is so obvious that the very reason for it is to tap into a new market. Fine, but during the football season, the football team should be the priority. O'Neill & Adams both took their squads to La Manga yes but it strikes me that those decisions were both made by the manager for footballing reasons i.e to give the squad a break, team bonding etc. It is perfectly obvious that this trip is happening purely for marketing reasons even though it is slap bang in the middle of the season. If these guys want to make the club marketable in Asia then great, but can't they do it without dragging the whole squad half-way around the world!!!

I know this is the way modern football is. Money comes first, before football, players, managers, fans, history, tradition etc we all have to get used to it and, to a certain extent, embrace it because it does not look like it is going to change any time soon. But the whole reason clubs are in so much debt and need to be rescued by super-rich businessmen is because they keep offering players bigger financial incentives to come to their clubs. The only way clubs can get better players than their competitors is to offer them more money, money that they can't really afford to pay, but if they don't they become uncompetitive, so something has to give! Clubs put prices up and we, the fans have to fork out more because of the greed of the players and also because of our own greed for success at any cost. The fact is, its all well and good moaning about the new owners making decisions that are blantantly business-motivated instead of football-motivated, but that is the sacfrafice you make for the money. Its our own (natural) greed for success as fans that makes us go down and moan about paying £20+ a week (myself included), but still do it week in, week out. We continue to line the pockets of the footballers through our own addiciton to the game and because the majority of us are too stupid/addicted to say 'enough is enough' we keep coming, so they keep putting prices up because they know we will come back anyway, so they pay players bigger wages, which they can't sustain, so they get into debt and have to be bailed out by rich investors.

We caused the problem and (on paper at least) it's the thai consortium's club now, not ours. Whether we think flying the players to thailand in the middle of the season is good or not, we don't actually get a say because we don't own the club so its pretty irrelevant! The whole thing just really pisses me off because, on a personal level, it is a prime example of why English football today is so so far from what I want it to be.

This is only my interpretation by the way, I know its pretty pessimistic but its honestly the way I feel about this situation. Feel free do disagree/point out where I've said something stupid/been blinded by my own strong opinions on the issue.

If we have a new manager by the time this happens this could be used like a pre season friendly for the new guy to assess the squad.

Frankly, I wouldn't mind some of the players being held back at Bangkok airport (for a couple of weeks or longer).

Apparently it's live on tv over there so their should be a stream somewhere

Somebody linked to the live feed last week, I can't remember who or where

For Thai TV this works for me.

My link

I think someone mentioned that it was on Channel 9 or 11? Link above is for Channel 11. There's a link to Channel 9 below the chat pane and links to other channels at the bottom of the page.
