Amin Posted 29 July 2011 Posted 29 July 2011 like it or not F1 isn't a popular sport to the masses of license fee payers so they couldn't justify it Even though it attracts huge viewing figures during every qualifying session and race, whether it be on midday or at 6 in the morning... F1 viewing figures in the UK are simply going to nosedive.
Jimmy Posted 29 July 2011 Posted 29 July 2011 They do realise that this will seriously affect their viewing figures right? Sky can **** off. <_< think most people will choose bbc when available, no ads, British GP will be live on BBC Even though it attracts huge viewing figures during every qualifying session and race, whether it be on midday or at 6 in the morning... F1 viewing figures in the UK are simply going to nosedive. they seriously won't, majority of people have Sky or another Cable company that carries Sky Sports now days
isaidno Posted 29 July 2011 Author Posted 29 July 2011 think most people will choose bbc when available, no ads, British GP will be live on BBC they seriously won't, majority of people have Sky or another Cable company that carries Sky Sports now days Sorry, the figures will fall massively. Theres no way 8m + people are gonna watch it on Sky. I'm a massive F1 , watch every race, go to races around the world. I don't have sky sports. Ecclestone is a money grabbing little troll
Amin Posted 29 July 2011 Posted 29 July 2011 think most people will choose bbc when available, no ads, British GP will be live on BBC they seriously won't, majority of people have Sky or another Cable company that carries Sky Sports now days Trust me, the figures are going to take a significant hit like everything else that moves over to sky.
nothin2seehere Posted 29 July 2011 Posted 29 July 2011 Such disappointing news. Sky ruins anything that goes there. I like the quote in the press release, something about increasing choice. I fail to see how reducing the number of free races [on the BBC] is leading to increased choice!
Jimmy Posted 29 July 2011 Posted 29 July 2011 BBC still have half the GPs LIVE they won't fall that much
isaidno Posted 29 July 2011 Author Posted 29 July 2011 From Martin Brundle on twitter BBC/Sky/F1 2012+. Found out last night, no idea how it will work yet I'm out of contract, will calmly work through options Not impressed Interesting
isaidno Posted 29 July 2011 Author Posted 29 July 2011 Sky Sports has confirmed that it will not run adverts during its broadcast coverage of Formula 1 races next year, and will instead limit them to the pre and post-race show. The broadcaster announced on Friday morning that it will screen every race, qualifying and practice session of the 2012 F1 season live while BBC Sport will scale-back its coverage to include just half the races. Adverts became hugely unpopular with UK television audiences when F1 switched from the BBC to ITV in 1997, and a number of key moments during races - including Damon Hill taking the lead of that year's Hungarian Grand Prix in an Arrows - were missed as a result. A spokesperson for Sky Sports told AUTOSPORT: "We won't have adverts while the races are running. We know they were very unpopular in the past and we don't have to go down that route." The broadcaster has no plans to introduce a 'pay-per-view' scheme for races, meaning that fans will have to purchase a Sky Sports package and pay from £31.95 per month for it. Sky Sports News, which is available on all Sky packages without the need for a Sky Sports subscription, will feature pre and post-race analysis in addition to that broadcast on Sky Sports. Everything broadcast on Sky Sports will also be available online and via mobile and tablet. BBC will continue to show highlights of each race it does not broadcast live.
Amin Posted 29 July 2011 Posted 29 July 2011 BBC still have half the GPs LIVE they won't fall that much Which means that half of the GP'S will suffer lower ratings, which adds up to a huge amount.
sdb Posted 29 July 2011 Posted 29 July 2011 Classic. Who would want any association with News International at the mo? Ecclestone is such a cock. Oh well it's 3 hours of my weekends gained.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 29 July 2011 Posted 29 July 2011 I think that f1 has gained popularity over the last 2 1/2 BBC years, the coverage is quite simply staggering in how close they get cameras to the cars/garages/drivers/motorhomes and the 3 main presenters in Jake Humphrey, Eddie Jordan and David Coulthard is fantastic - notably Eddie, he does not allow himself to be contained by his (if any!) media training. We all see interviews on football where the interviewer clearly skirts around a controversial question, only to get a bland non-committal answer from whatever player/manager is being questioned. Eddie has no fear getting straight to the point, asks direct questions, drags team principles/drivers from out of the garages to get them on the telly. Not to mention the pre qualifying/race features etc that they all do. Should these three, plus Martin Blundell, Lee McKenzie and Ted Kravitz all stay at the BBC I can't see how Sky can compete. It will be interesting comparing the viewing figures between them when they're showing simultaneous races but I am almost certain of a drop in figures overall
Brainy Posted 29 July 2011 Posted 29 July 2011 Plenty of downsides but Sky have the funds to take F1 coverage and features to an even higher level than the BBC
I am Rod Hull Posted 29 July 2011 Posted 29 July 2011 I have Sky but this sucks... The BBC do a great job... Yet another sport shafted by rich nobs who think they cant have enough money...
Jimmy Posted 29 July 2011 Posted 29 July 2011 if F1 was a crown jewel it'd be cheaper and the BEEB would of kept it but it isn't and fact is more people would of moaned had they kept it than will be upset they now share with sky and half the people moaning will have gotten over it by the 5th GP next season, people just love to bitch at sky now days.

I'm more pissed off with BBC and Bernie than anything else.
stix Posted 29 July 2011 Posted 29 July 2011 Whitmarsh, Ecclestone: Sky/BBC coverage good for F1 As the shock of the BBC/ Sky Sports announcement starts to settle, there have been some supportive comments surfacing about the issue. Chief among them is commercial rights boss Bernie Ecclestone. AUTOSPORT covered his comments: Its good for Formula 1, he said. For sure there are going to be a lot more people viewing, and a lot more opportunities for people to view, so from that point Im very happy. Ive been finalising this all night long and one or two things might change a little. Sky will broadcast everything, all the races, live. The Beeb will do 50 per cent live, and when it isnt live, they will be putting together a very good highlights package. They [bBC] may yet do the whole race deferred, we have to see. It is a bit of an interesting change of position considering he was suggesting pay-to-view TV would not be something F1 is interested in just a few weeks ago. Ultimately F1 is interested in any broadcast package that carries 10 million homes and has the money to offer commercial rights holders CVC Capital Partners. Ecclestone was fielding questions about the arrangement after a busy day of meetings with the teams to share the details with them. McLarens Martin Whitmarsh is on record as remaining positive about the arrangement. Again, AUTOSPORT has the comments: From what Bernie has said its better than expected, said Whitmarsh. The BBC will show every grand prix in full, half of them live and half of them deferred, so free-to-air is available to everyone. Sky sound like they are really going to commit to it as well, so it sounds like there is a little bit of competition between the BBC and Sky. So overall, from Bernies view, it will increase the total viewership within the UK. Bernie assured me, and I asked him several times, the deferred coverage will not be highlights, it will be a full race. That, to some fans, will be very important, depending on exactly races they are, so hopefully that means its a good deal for everyone. Based upon that, if it increases the total viewership, and it maintains the ability of free to air for all of the viewing public in the UK, then cautiously its good news isnt it? he said of the paddocks reaction. He accepted that many fans were likely to be angry, but hoped the cost implications would be less severe than they feared. I can understand why, said Whitmarsh. Based on what Ive heard there wont be a premium for watching Formula 1 on Sky, so it sounds like its good news rather than bad. We have to try and maintain the show, work harder, try and reach out to fans, listen to them, well continue doing that, hopefully we can all work together to make the sport much bigger. This doesnt directly affect me as i have sky but it is very disappointing that the nearly dead Ecclestone went back on what he originally said(unless i was dreaming i am sure i read/heard he said F1 wouldnt go to pay tv) The thing that concerns me, is that everybody involved are still being rather coy about it going to payperview. If this did happen i personally think it would kill the sport. Just like it has gradually killed Boxing.
Super_horns Posted 29 July 2011 Posted 29 July 2011 Money talks doesn't it but be interesting to see if F1 loses fans and sponsors after this decision. Will people go down to the pub and watch a race like you might with a football match? Still its not totally disappeared from the BBC for now...
Amin Posted 30 July 2011 Posted 30 July 2011 Whitmarsh, Ecclestone: Sky/BBC coverage good for F1 (unless i was dreaming i am sure i read/heard he said F1 wouldnt go to pay tv) You read/heard correctly: http://www.digitaltveurope.net/news_articles/2011/may_11/09_may_11/no_future_for_f1_with_pay_tv,_says_ecclestone http://www.crash.net/f1/news/169097/1/ecclestone_pay-per-view_would_be_suicidal_for_f1.html
isaidno Posted 30 July 2011 Author Posted 30 July 2011 Best qualifying of the year, the drivers actually going for it instead of saving tyres.
Jimmy Posted 31 July 2011 Posted 31 July 2011 looks like a wet start, for the good of the championship Vettel needs a couple of DNFs
Trav Le Bleu Posted 31 July 2011 Posted 31 July 2011 That was a very contrite Lewis Hamilton. Maybe he's decided that you live and learn. Hats off to him.
isaidno Posted 31 July 2011 Author Posted 31 July 2011 Button is the best driver in the world in changeable conditions. Another fantastic drive
