muzzy1981 Posted 27 March 2011 Posted 27 March 2011 Shoot me down but what are peoples thoughts on, if we play 442, could Naughton be pushed forward, with Vitor playing Rb. Vitor I feel would be more suited to the Rb role in a 442. Just like mee at lb when we play 442. Plus we all know how deadly naughton is when cuts in.
themotivator Posted 27 March 2011 Posted 27 March 2011 i reckon naughton does a good job where he is. if we got our centerbacks sorted and our CM's decided to conduct their play with an ounce of consistency our current system (433/451 or whatever you want to call it.) seems to be a pretty strong one. oh yer and we could do with some more goals etc etc.
LCFCmatt Posted 27 March 2011 Posted 27 March 2011 Play him wing forward like vassell and Gallagher have been
Scow Posted 27 March 2011 Posted 27 March 2011 I think he gets so much success down the right because he makes forward runs from a deeper position. It's harder for the opposition to counter this as a full back isn't usually afforded as much attention as a winger/wide player.
cc_star Posted 27 March 2011 Posted 27 March 2011 To play 4-4-2 we'd need to change our midfield 3 - for 2 players with the skills to play as a midfield 2 Despite it being (sometimes) a strong area of our team, the 3 of them often can't cut it and fail to get a grip on games. I don't know who the 2 players are, but we don't have them on our books, therefore the only way is to play 4-3-3(4-5-1)
sdb Posted 27 March 2011 Posted 27 March 2011 I suggested this a while back. Didn't go down well. It's not cause he's a problem at RB (obviously). He's our only natural width on that side. It'd mean Vassell doesn't have to play, and we would have a very tough back 4 of Bruma - Bamba - Vitor - Mee/Berner. Very solid at this level.
Bert Posted 27 March 2011 Posted 27 March 2011 He's been easily our most consistent defender, if not player this season. Keep him where he is.
shiv Posted 27 March 2011 Posted 27 March 2011 He's been easily our most consistent defender, if not player this season. Keep him where he is. Totally agree. I think he's been good both defensively and going forward this season.
LCFC94 Posted 27 March 2011 Posted 27 March 2011 Yh but remember a rb coming forward is adding another player so there are less opposition to deal with him, but play him as a winger then he would be there defenders player to mark so would be easily picked up.
Kingylcfc Posted 27 March 2011 Posted 27 March 2011 keep him at right back, just look at how Brazil play, with Dani Alves....how much does he get up front from right back Kyle is best to play back there
Corky Posted 27 March 2011 Posted 27 March 2011 I see your point but I'd be concerned about a King-type situation occuring, playing too far forward you take out their best assets- arriving from deep, almost unnoticed. Vassell is good in that he occupies the full-back, creating space for Naughton to run into. As others have said, leave him where he is as we're reaping more than we possibly would with a change.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 28 March 2011 Posted 28 March 2011 Why would anyone want to play our best player out of position?
thybluefox Posted 28 March 2011 Posted 28 March 2011 I don't really see any positive in playing him further up the pitch tbh. He's still getting forward alot, has shown he's more than capable defending as well, add in to that we have no real logical replacement.

Why would anyone want to play our best player out of position? I agree with all of these really. Besides the fact I still don't think 4-4-2 would work with him, there is a reason Naughton has such success down the flank and it is what Corky has illuded to. Not to mention just how well Naughton has played this season and how odd it would be to change something that evidently works so well. Tinkering with a team unnecessarily is what ruins form.
ScouseFox Posted 28 March 2011 Posted 28 March 2011 Above anything else, moving him forward means we have no capable right back.
unreachable Posted 28 March 2011 Posted 28 March 2011 Above anything else, moving him forward means we have no capable right back. Obviously there are risks in causing instability in the defence by chopping and changing but I would like to get Vitor into the team and he has the talent to play at right back. I have a feeling that Naughton will switch to left back against Middlebrough with Vitor at right back.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 28 March 2011 Posted 28 March 2011 He would work brilliantly in a 5-3-2. Trouble is you need someone to match on the left. Certain it ain't Berner on pace alone and not sure about Mee either.

Bert Posted 28 March 2011 Posted 28 March 2011 Goalie Bruma Bamba Vitor Naughton PVA King Wellens Abe Kamara The Yak Sounds good.
The Doctor Posted 28 March 2011 Posted 28 March 2011 i'd drop the yak for a game or two, see if making him fight for a place will get him to put a bit more effort in on matchdays.
thybluefox Posted 28 March 2011 Posted 28 March 2011 Goalie Bruma Bamba Vitor Naughton PVA King Wellens Abe Kamara The Yak Sounds good. That formation suits our squad best, but only when we have PVA back, or Cunningham next season.
ajthefox Posted 29 March 2011 Posted 29 March 2011 That formation suits our squad best, but only when we have PVA back, or Cunningham next season. I imagine the chances of that are probably quite small, as they would be with PVA too.
thybluefox Posted 29 March 2011 Posted 29 March 2011 I imagine the chances of that are probably quite small, as they would be with PVA too. Yeah I'd fully expect us not to be getting PVA, can't see Man City having much use for him though?
Finnegan Posted 29 March 2011 Posted 29 March 2011 Surely the whole point of Naughton's success is that he's got the pace and the fitness to bomb forward as well as the winger? Playing him further up the pitch with someone else behind him wouldn't give us more of an attacking threat, it'd take his potency away.
