Michael Owen

So lets get this clear... he gets a few games for Man Utd but not many and he isnt as good as he used to be.

Yet he isnt good enough for Leicester City in the CHAMPIONSHIP?

We are currently playing a striker who wasnt getting picked for his team.. just got another one who wasnt getting any games for his team... both from average at best prem teams.. a few yong lads who cant get games for the likes of Chelsea and Man City yet a striker who gets games for Man Utd isnt good enough for you?

Do you realise how stupid that sounds?

I agree with the theory behind this post. The fact is he has played games this season for united, and has scored in a few as well. He's been preferred over a rapidly developing Wellbeck and a decent looking Macheda both who were shipped out on loan before Owen. He's also got Berbatov, Rooney and Hernandez in front of him, and most strikers in the world would not get past them three into the first team.

Granted he does lack a yard of pace nowadays, and he's maybe not as polished as he once was. But a fit Owen will score goals and will play well in this league if he can keep injury free. To me there is no question about if he's good enough to play for us, my only concern is can he stay fit enough to make it worth our while.

It's only 15 months since he bagged a Champions League hat trick.

And people don't think he's good enough for the Championship?

What a mixed up thread. No one in their right mind would say Owen at 31 is not GOOD enough to play for us. The question is whether he is FIT enough to make it worth while.

If it does happen then we should not get too excited and accept that he may only play 10-15 games a season.

Would rather play Jeffrey Schlupp than pay ludicrous wages for a striker who's not really lived up to expectations in the last four or so years.

Soon we're going to have the England World Cup 2006 team.

He isn't as good as he used to be, gets few games because of that fact and he also seems incapable of staying fit for prolonged periods of time.

He's been at Man United - a side expected to dominate most teams and win nigh on every game - since July 09 and has appeared in only 25 of 76 league games. That in itself tells its own story for me. At that ratio, he'd be lucky to play in 15 league games for us in a season where he would have less service and firepower yet get kicked half to death by giant, no-nonsense defenders on cabbage-patch pitches. His glass legs couldn't take that. I'm sure the handsome salary would make it easier, though.

Yakubu wasn't being picked for Everton and yes they're a much worse side than Man United, but he has the same number of Premier League goals as Owen this season - a massive 1. Unlike Owen, though, he stays fit and offers the team something, not to mention picking up a smaller wage packet. I admittedly know little about Kamara so it'd be pointless for me to talk about him. The others are all young, hungry defenders with something to prove - Naughton (very highly regarded and has been awesome for us by all accounts), Bruma (played for Chelsea and has already played for Holland at the age of 19; thought to have a very bright future ahead of him) and Ben Mee, who after a shaky start has been a complete rock and not looked at all out of place - not someone on the decline who'd come here for one last payday and spend most of his time where Clemence and Tunchev have.

I'd rather use the wages we'd no doubt splash on Owen to completely fund a permanent move for Naughton. Call it stupid if you want, but for the money Owen would almost certainly cost us I'd rather look for reliable players who can get the job done.

None of those 3 are wingers. Owen on the wing???

You can't just throw players together like that. You need round pegs in round holes, you need a system, you need players to compliment each other. A Scott Sinclair typee player is a must in the summer - Gally on the other side (if recent performances haven't proved he is important for us I don't know what will) and then you pick 1 of Yak/Kamara/Owen/Waghorn/Vassell/other for the centre. Playing strikers out wide hasn't worked on the whole, see Vassell as the best example.

however, I'm afraid players aren't round pegs, they're individuals. It depends entirely on the player, and what kind of wide role they're playing. As a striker, Vassell would probably be more of a success on the left, but Gally has a more complete creative skillset, which is more useful for himself and the team.

How about David Villa? He's a striker, yet he performs better when deployed 'on the wing', but realise that a traditional byline crossing wing2r and an inside forward cutting in from wide areas, making runs between the fullback and centre half, and being a more active goal threat are different kinds of players

As for the Michael Owen thing itself, we don't need him at all, he's past it. I agree with Edmund, would much rather see Schlupp thrive in a city shirt....

I hear on the jungle drums that MO is considering an offer made by Sven for a season of football at the King Power Stadium............ yeah really.

It looks like Owen will drop down a level next season but it's going to be like Robbie Fowler all over again. I don't know whether we should bother myself.

Has Owen said anything about dropping a division?

Not sure if he's directly been quoted but it appears he's ready to drop down from the stories coming out.

He is not short of a few quid is he? Hopefully this suggests an desire to play rather than anything else.

Could see him going to a lower Prem team (maybe Blackburn, Blackpool or Birmingham if they stay up) instead. Either that or he might call it quits.

Unless someone like Liverpool, Tottenham, Everton etc go in for him I reckon he'll retire.

In other words, there's more chance Kermogant wining the Ballon d'Or next season than Owen joining us, Brighton or Southampton.

Makes you wonder where the rumour has come from though, especially regarding Brighton and Southampton?

He's probably brought a house down there and the bookies are putting 2 and 2 together.

And coming up with 9?

Can't see him coming here, nor a couple of other players mentioned here.

I get the feeling Sven is going to try the loans, freebies route again unfortunately  and is hoping a preseason of preperation will mould a decent team.

Again? Sousa was in charge at the start of last season so when Sven came in the transfer window was closed so that was all he could get in, and he probably didn't sign two many permanent signings in jan because a) they very rarely make any impact from then to the end of the season and b) him not knowing what league we would be in the following season, which means its more sensible to get loans in

There must be something in those odds, given virtually all of them are Championship sides.
