Ian Holloway wants to beef up his Blackpool strikeforce by launching a double raid for Nile Ranger and Martyn Waghorn.

The Seasiders boss have already landed veteran Kevin Phillips as they prepare to sell DJ Campbell.

And Holloway wants to use the funds available from Campbell's imminent Premier League return to sign Newcastle's Ranger and Leicester outcast Waghorn.

Ranger, who penned a five-year contract extension at St James" Park just last year, has been given the green light to make a loan move to Bloomfield Road.

Waghorn is surplus to requirements at big-spending Leicester and has opened talks over a £1million switch.

Blackpool, who are rebuilding after losing a host of key players following their relegation, also want Scotland midfielder Barry Ferguson to follow Birmingham team-mate Phillips up the M6.

Ferguson, 33, could make a surprise free transfer move as Blues look to slash their wage bill now they are in the Championship.

I cannot see Waggy going for 1m

let's hope they are made to pay up in real money and not mess us around like they did with campbell until Milan stepped in -pikeys

Waggy deserves a chance next season, and it would be stupid to sell him to Hollowhead for 1m. The majority of our fans like him as he's very hardworking and obviously cares for the club.

and more particularly -played in the right position might well deliver the goals we will need. I am a bit surprised Hull haven't had a punt for him as NP knows what he can do

Got to keep Waggy. He's young and hungry and just wants the chance to prove himself, which he was never given at Sunderland.

In certain games he's pace can be the difference between a no hope long ball that turns into a goal....be a shame if we let him go.

To me the most important aspect of all the conjecture surrounding the possible sale of Waggy is this:- if we are actually prepared to sell him it can only be because Sven is about to bring in at least one more striker whom he regards is much better than Waghorn.

Even in Sven's preferred 4-4-2 formation Nugent + Vassell ( + Gallagher + Schlupp ) would not be anywhere near enough. ( Howard will not play for us, Sven would not keep him instead of Waggy ).

I suggest that if Waggy does go, people should consider the new strikers when they arrive, then comment on Sven's judgement.

Not to Blackpool. I'd like to see him stay. If he can manage to reproduce any of the form he's previosly shown he'll have a future at the club.

I like waghorn, he is rooney-esk, strong, quick, good footballing brain, however, waghorn Is not a potent goal scorer.

Nobody will get a run of 6-7 games if they don't perform this season such is the stregnth of the squad, but if players perform I think we will pretty much see the same starting 11 for the whole season.

No we won't. Injuries, suspensions and lapses of form will take their toll during the course of a 46-match season.

We'll need plenty of depth in the squad, hence the current bulk buying.

If Waghorn performs well in pre-season he can still force his way into contention for a squad place for opening day.

Would love Waggy to stay battle his way back into the team but I just can't see it.

Sven and the owners are going for it and I don't think they will give him the time he needs to bed down in the side.

Sod it - just sell him but get Steve Lansdown to do the valuation!

i would prefer we had a replacement signed first :sweating:

however i hope the lad gets a look in this season, he will score goals

I think this is more about what Waggy wants rather than what us or Sven wants.

I still like Waggy and think he is a young lad with potential, his first year with us was a great start, when we bought him it was a mistake to expect him to carry our stike force (and at 3 mill was overpriced) as he was still young and inexperienced. His season was inconsistent as youd expect and i think he dropped his head with the arrival of sven and the loanees.

If his head is right and he understands he in not first on the team sheet, if he is prepared to work on and off the pitch and recognise that this is a great chance to learn and improve himself and possibly become the best player he can. If he puts learning and being part of the (soon to be) most professional and successful club in the midlands all ahead of a simple (and understandable) desire to play and run around, then I want Waggy here.

Let's not try to run before we can walk. First of all, focus on promotion. Once that's achieved, THEN we can think about overtaking Villa, West Brom, Stoke etc..

Coaching is also a part of it, he seems to have gone backwards since he joined us permanently, there are a lot of mitigating circumstances in that... mainly Sousa's lack of preparation for the season along with leaving it till deadline day to bring him in, meaning he was joining a badly disjointed and unmotivated team. The team was so bad at the that point in the season, it's sometimes difficult to remember

However the work being done on the training ground since then, isn't suiting his game, it may be that our coaches aren't cutting the mustard or plain & simple waggy needs a strike partner and is better in a 4-4-2 or in a 4-5-1 with the midfielders flooding to support him, but in our 4-3-3 it seems it's been difficult for him to settle in, probably because he's the one who's been pushed out wider. I was disappointed that in either of our poor runs under Sven waggy wasn't given a chance beyond the last few minutes.

He scored 4 goals in 30 appearances, Vassell did the same from 31 - so nothing in it, but Waggy's came from far, far, far less time on the pitch as he was generally an 88th minute sub

I feel sorry for him personally, hopefully he can knuckle down and grow with us, but I fear he may fair better elsewhere, and good luck to him if he does.

Yes we would.

I for one would like to see him stay, we all know what a good young prospect he is. It's a case of whether he can stand fighting for a starting place in a situation of increasing competition.

I think a difference between this season and last will be the lack of pressure and burden of expectation due to his price tag. It won't be weighing on his shoulders quite as much as last season.

This is assuming he gets a chance to show what he can do...

Posted

His finishing is the weakness in his game.

Work-rate and determination are first-class, just needs more composure in front of goal.

I think that when sven came in last season he was given the task of turning the table on its head and getting us in the playoffs. The money was available to him and time was of the essence. Waggy is a young impressionable guy for starters, new gaffer with a big rep & a very successful career in club management. maybe nerves got to him when it mattered most? I know he had a good few months to impress sven but yakubu came in during that period and seemed ireplacable. Waggy bagged at the first opportunity this time around and hasnt played since then. Who knows? I for one wouldnt like to see him go out on loan or be sold just yet. the guy has potential for sure.

I think once he hits his groove - there will be no stopping him, a definite confidence player.

No way do I want him here. Like all of our supporters, I want promotion. How many chances does he requiret? What's more to the point, is how many chances does he deserve?

At best, a mere bench warmer.
