Plastic fan?

I read the term 'plastic fan' on this forum numerous times.

Could someone please give an explanation as to what makes a fan 'plastic'

I have supported city for nearly 40 years, going to matches, and even as a youngster going to the training ground for many hours just to get my 'heroes' autographs.

I am not a season ticket holder but attended 11 home matches last season, it would have been more but due to work commitments and finance i wasn't able to attend more although obviously i would have liked to. At the Ipswich match, classed as a platinum fixture although nothing was riding on the result i paid £32 for myself and two under 18 tickets at £18 each, with a programme at £3 and a couple of drinks for the young un's i didn't see much change from £80.

Am i a 'plastic' fan because i only went to a quarter of the games? :dunno:

Not that I'm really bothered what anybody else thinks!

I don't think Leicester are successful enough to have any 'plastic' fans lol Not like United and Chelsea - or am I getting confused with armchair fans :dunno: Ah well

For me, a plastic fan is simply someone who shows no passion or care for the club but then decide to care and attend matches when there is success. Like, not turning up to a match all season then attending play off matches.

You do not sound anything like a plastic fan.

It comes across to me as derogatory label for any fan that doesn't fit the ideal of the person using the phrase, I've seen it associated with those that don't sing / don't stand for 90 + minutes, a variant on the flask brigade, those that only turn up when we're doing well (the definition of which varies quite a lot), who don't agree with every view of the user about the team but they could also be called everything from a fool to c**t or anything else that has irritated the user of the phrase. etc, etc.

Take, for example, the Man City home game. Thousands of "fans" came out of the woodwork to fill the stadium, yet they couldn't be arsed to turn up in the league 1 season (except the last home game)

I'm sure plenty of them have other commitments, family, playing for a Saturday team or limited funds and have to be selective as to which games they can attend. People are too quick to judge without knowing the facts.

Oh lovely, another debate on the prawn sandwich brigade.

So who's more plastic someone with a family that can only scrape money together to go to a few games and chooses the ones that will give them the best value or someone that has money to burn, maybe an executive box that spends the game eating drinking chatting, clapping politely if we score, not that bothered if we lose yet attends every home game - maybe it's neither But I wouldn't call the first person a plastic fan as I've been there.

I think that the bottom line is if you're willing to pay to see your team play and you care about the result you shouldn't be considered a "plastic fan". I really hate that phrase !

From my personal point of view, (unbelivably) there were some box holders last season that were known to only watch parts the game and mostly just sit in the box, eating, drinking and chatting amongst themselves. This is who I call 'plastic' fans, 'fans' that are not bothered to watch the whole game and more interested about socialising and drinking.

On the other side of a box holder not being 'plastic', however for instance, my family had a box since the 70's and we've always watched the whole game, even if we were utter garbage. We certainly haven't the box just for advertising the business to the spectators, via advertising boards, and the food etc offered for any box holder, and on top of this, when we were in administration, given £XXX,XXX to the football club. Box holders who have big interest of the club and care about it like my family, I don't consider as being a 'plastic supporter.

Just my opinion on who you could call a box holder/s a plastic or not a plastic fan really.

surely a fan who attends a few games cant be plastic. Like DavieG says people have very little expedible cash these days so maybe a game against man city represents value for money.

Now, i work with a bloke who claims to be a chelsea fan. Never been to the bridge and still thinks hiddinks in charge...now that to me is plastic.

Very well said.

Well said DavieG.

I've used it in the Real Madrid thread in regards to other clubs fans that want to come to the game e.g. Lamby etc. I just think its wrong. I did say about they should have a certain structure in which to get tickets for this game, maybe I should of explained my self better but I was getting shot down all over the place in the other thread.

Lack of financial ability to go to matches doesn't make you plastic. If the club's in your heart you'll know it, no matter how far away you are from LE2.

Think that's actually a slightly different debate to be honest.

Well since Leicester got Sven as manager about 5 people i know started going to the games saying they support them even though before sven were calling us shit. i would say thats a plastic fan. Wouldn't say your one since you have supported them for years and years and didnt attend all games due to that for 3 - 4 people its like £100 if you think about it  so no your not

Everyone who isn't Father Ted.

Where have I ever said everybody is a plastic fan?

samjohnson said everything. Everyone came out of the woodwork for the Man City game and the Scunthorpe game - last home game of the League 1 season. This will also happen for the Real Madrid match. Those 'additional' supporters who don't usually attend are generally plastic fans. They are once a year supporters.

Did you not read DavieG's post as well? About other commitments or situations that people are in which mean they can't attend more than once a season?

Do those once-a-year supporters/plastic fans include those from abroad? Take VinceNoir (I think it was him) and his brother, who came abroad for one game against Bristol City back in February. He came over for one game. Is he a plastic fan?

Phew! I'm definately not a plastic fan as I didn't attend either of the games you mentioned
