Corky Posted 3 July 2011 Posted 3 July 2011 Sammy Lee? Are people for real? There's a reason he's just left Liverpool... cos Kenny's realised he's not good enough. He was crap as manager at Bolton. Never rated him and imo he was at fault for Liverpool's downfall at the beginning of last season. NO NO NO. And yet you'd happily see Powell back, who's done what exactly at Charlton?
Trav Le Bleu Posted 3 July 2011 Posted 3 July 2011 He's only 5 foot 2 , and weighs over 20 stone (i may have made this up ) that commands a lot of respect in my book I heard this evangelical type woman praising him in the streets yesterday. She was waving her hands in the air shouting, "Lardie, Lardie!" I'll get my coat.
JoeyB Posted 3 July 2011 Posted 3 July 2011 Ain't sammy Lee an assistant manager, and we currently have Faz as that.....
Nick Posted 3 July 2011 Posted 3 July 2011 Andy Gray's name on footy rumours - That would be fairly upsetting.
Guest Bilo Posted 3 July 2011 Posted 3 July 2011 Andy Gray's name on footy rumours - That would be fairly upsetting. Put him in charge of the WFC.
Greg2607 Posted 3 July 2011 Posted 3 July 2011 We need a young coach with fresh ideas and a bit of personality. But someone who can do the job properly and is a professional coach rather than just a professional player who's turned to coaching yet who might be a dead loss as an organiser, communicator and motivator. I've been really appalled by some of the basic shortcomings of our team in the last 10 years and our appalling record over that time speaks for itself. By shortcomings I mean failings which could and should be addressed all the time in training, whether related to fitness, free-kicks, corners, throw-ins, movement off the ball, calling, basic tactical organisation, goalkeeper distribution and the psycholoical approach we should be taking in various match situations. I don't know him personally and it might be a season too soon even if he fancies the job, but I do wonder if Matt Oakley might suit. The bloke seems to set standards in everything he does. Hang on......you talk about wanting a professional coach, rather than just a player who has moved into coaching.......and then suggest Matt Oakley as a possible solution!! contradiction young sir!

I would suggest to populate the coaching staff with young personality with fresh ideas, but not the 1st Team Coach. What we need is someone with experience who can bring solid coaching to the table, not experiments and folly. The minute I saw Sammy had been let go, I felt that he could do a job for us, and there's history of implementing Sven's plans there. Matt Oakley can go on to be a coach, perhaps player/coach, but I as I don't know how much skill he has at coaching, it'd be difficult to pan him and say he could or couldn't do it. There's a lot more than being great friends with team mates, reaching your twillight years.
bald reynard Posted 4 July 2011 Author Posted 4 July 2011 Chelsea went downhill after Ray Wilkins was sacked. Still out of a job I think. A possibility. I think Sven and him have a 'history' together - and Sven likes to recruit people he knows. Whether he'd want to come just as a Coach (not Assistant Manager) ?
bald reynard Posted 4 July 2011 Author Posted 4 July 2011 Ain't sammy Lee an assistant manager, and we currently have Faz as that..... Yeah, thinking about it, I can't see Sammy coming here just as a First Team Coach. He'll end up as Assistant to one of his (ex-Liverpool) mates in Management up t'north - I can't think of any with a vacancy off hand, but I'm sure there will be someone.
bald reynard Posted 4 July 2011 Author Posted 4 July 2011 Lets go and get Gerry Taggart back from Oldham That won't happen - I doubt if Sven has any knowledge of Gerry. As I said earlier, he likes to recruit people he knows.
bald reynard Posted 4 July 2011 Author Posted 4 July 2011 Peter Taylor... Well I know people won't like it - but him and Sven go back a long way ! The main reason it probably won't happen, is that Taylor now seems to be a pretty 'aware' sort of guy (resigning from Bradford when he realised he didn't have the supporters backing - despite the Chairman wanting to stick with him) - and he'll know City fans are an unforgiving lot ! Personally, I don't have a problem with him coming back as a Coach - he won't be in charge (particularly of buying and selling - which was his main downfall with us) - and he has a good reputation of assisting on that side.
gloucesterfox Posted 4 July 2011 Posted 4 July 2011 I seem to remember a story where PT was showing Svenaround Belvoir Drive and when they got to the canteen where Pasta had beenintroduced as about the only carb's Gerry stood up and asked "Are you the****er that go our chips stopped?" can't remember a source but had the ring of something Gerry may ask! Wonder if Sven remembers, assuming it's true, may not be the best starter for a job!
Stevosevic Posted 4 July 2011 Posted 4 July 2011 Not sure why people are suggesting Taggart. Surely you are aware he left us for a promotion - to be a number two at Oldham, the only way he would come back is if he was offered the assistant managers job.

Thracian spot on again in my book (we really should have listened to him re.Gradel and Campbell) A good example for me is Waghorn. Decent player who it is obvious to see has a technical fault when shooting as he often blasts over the bar. You would imagine that if we can see it, so can the coaches who you would think would work with him to eradicate the fault in the same way a golfer might look to correct a slice. It may be happening, but I see no evidence of it whatsoever when I look on during practice.
Kingylcfc Posted 4 July 2011 Posted 4 July 2011 Graham Alexander? he's just been released by Burnley...maybe as a player/coach?
Mickey O'Neil Posted 4 July 2011 Posted 4 July 2011 Think sammy Lee will link up with his pal at west ham. Fecking hope so. We can do better.
accessory Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 Gary Alexander? he's just been released by Burnley...maybe as a player/coach? Graham Alexander. He's just turned 40! Not sure he'd fit into our quick passing game, or whether he's got any coaching badges. Incidentally, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is currently working as a coach with Forest. We could have done with him to help the strikers currently on our books.
bald reynard Posted 5 July 2011 Author Posted 5 July 2011 I do think we have to restrict ourselves to speculation on people Sven knows well / has worked with in the past. His record of recruiting people he's had with him before, is notable - eg Faz and Hamann. I can't see him taking on anyone who's not worked with him. So that limits potential new Coaches to guys from his England, Man City or Notts County days - or, I suppose, Serie A (I think Sweden is too far in his past) ! And they will have to be happy to only come as No 3 in the hierarchy - ie no one who wants to be Assistant Manager - that will preclude a few. Taggs / Gary Mac / Alexander etc are really not likely to happen. Someone like Sol Campbell though is a possibility - ie (recent) ex-players who've been with Sven in the past and who might be wanting to start on the managerial ladder (or have already started Coaching and want to move on a bit further - like Hamann). One name that has cropped up before (when CP left) is Craig Short (brother of Chris, City's fitness Coach - who's taken the squad back to the sandhills of Bradgate Park to get in shape - just like the old days !) - who was with Sven at Notts C and took over as Manager there (briefly).
accessory Posted 5 July 2011 Posted 5 July 2011 BBC Sport 1423: Former Liverpool and Newcastle midfielder Dietmar Hamann has been named as the new manager of Stockport County.
