bald reynard Posted 2 July 2011 Posted 2 July 2011 As it sounds that Hamann will be off to Manchesterport County soon, Sven will have to bring in a replacement Coach pretty quick. Do people have any ideas on who might be available / any good (or thoughts of who Sven might want) ? I know that there'll be plenty calling for Powell to return - but that won't happen (he's still Charlton Manager !). And there'll be a few suggesting Tord - but he's an old man. Who else ?
sphericalfox Posted 2 July 2011 Posted 2 July 2011 I believe Sammy Lee has been let go by Liverpool just last week. He worked under Sven in the England set-up if my memory still works correctly. He would be an excellent addition to the club's backroom staff. Also will have a fair bit of knowledge of up and coming lads out in the footballing world. SIGN HIM UP SVEN! YOU KNOWS IT MAKES SENSE!
Jon the Hat Posted 2 July 2011 Posted 2 July 2011 Yep Sammy Lee is the obvious choice if he is up for it.

Also will have a fair bit of knowledge of up and coming lads out in the footballing world. SIGN HIM UP SVEN! YOU KNOWS IT MAKES SENSE! Yeah, you're right - I checked on Wikipedia - he was with Sven (part- and then full- time) for most of the period he was England boss. I wonder whether the timing of his going from Liverpool has been set by the imminent departure of Hamann. As far as I know, it was a bit of a surprise that Dalgleish got shot of him at this stage in pre-season - you'd have thought if he was going to do it, it would've been at the end of last season. I've seen on a couple of Scouse sites that Kenny has lined up his (other) old 'mukka' as Coach - Macka (Gary McAllister) - now he's gone / going from Villa. Perhaps Sven has moved / is moving for Lee. Of course, Sven could go for Gary Mac (I'd be happy with that) - but I doubt he knows much about him - they've no history together and we know Sven likes to keep his old mates in work ! I'd be very happy with Sammy L.
Thracian Posted 2 July 2011 Posted 2 July 2011 We need a young coach with fresh ideas and a bit of personality. But someone who can do the job properly and is a professional coach rather than just a professional player who's turned to coaching yet who might be a dead loss as an organiser, communicator and motivator. I've been really appalled by some of the basic shortcomings of our team in the last 10 years and our appalling record over that time speaks for itself. By shortcomings I mean failings which could and should be addressed all the time in training, whether related to fitness, free-kicks, corners, throw-ins, movement off the ball, calling, basic tactical organisation, goalkeeper distribution and the psycholoical approach we should be taking in various match situations. I don't know him personally and it might be a season too soon even if he fancies the job, but I do wonder if Matt Oakley might suit. The bloke seems to set standards in everything he does.
Webbo Posted 2 July 2011 Posted 2 July 2011 Chelsea went downhill after Ray Wilkins was sacked. Still out of a job I think.
CosbehFox Posted 2 July 2011 Posted 2 July 2011 I agree with Thracian. Coaching is increasingly a young mans game. Fresh ideas and someone who can communicate to the players better. Take Karl Robinson at MK Dons or Villas Boas now at Chelsea. Fresh breed of coaches, tap into that. These weren't footballers, they look at the game with a different view and different education.
Kingylcfc Posted 2 July 2011 Posted 2 July 2011 Steve Howard? his name always seems to crop up for coaching? maybe follow in the footsteps of Chrissy P !
Zingari Posted 2 July 2011 Posted 2 July 2011 Sammy Lee would be a dream. He's only 5 foot 2 , and weighs over 20 stone (i may have made this up ) that commands a lot of respect in my book
Haydos Posted 3 July 2011 Posted 3 July 2011 Someone that doesn't just act as a yes man for Sven. A talented young coach with something to prove and who also wants to learn. No idea who.
Father Ted Posted 3 July 2011 Posted 3 July 2011 Sammy Lee? Are people for real? There's a reason he's just left Liverpool... cos Kenny's realised he's not good enough. He was crap as manager at Bolton. Never rated him and imo he was at fault for Liverpool's downfall at the beginning of last season. NO NO NO.

Nick Posted 3 July 2011 Posted 3 July 2011 Managing and coaching are two very different things altogether. Agreed - Junior Lewis is the only man for this job.
