Buck1983 Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 Even tho we have made some amazing signings we are still missing the all important 20 goal a season striker. Obviously we are linked heavily with Maynard and still Yakubu but with the lack of movement on both fronts I feel that we are fighting a losing battle. So the reason for me opening this topic is to find out who else our fans would realisticaly want to see as there 20 goal a season striker. Maybe we should be looking abroad?
Babylon Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 It certainly helps though. Written by foxblogger in November: "“We’re just a 20-goal a season man away from walking this league,” is a common refrain of Championship fans throughout the country. Over the last few years there have been some great strikers in this division. Ebanks-Blake at Wolves (07/08 & 08/09), Jason Scotland at Swansea (08/09), Kevin Phillips (07/08), Michael Copra (06/07) and Marlon King (05/06) are just a recent few. But the 20-goal a season man remains an unobtainable fantasy at most clubs, and Leicester fans should be aware of some very important facts. 20-goal a season strikers are extremely rare and Leicester haven’t fielded one in the top two divisions since Gary Lineker. In the last five Championship seasons just 13 players have scored more than 20 league goals in a single campaign. Only three of them played for promoted teams. Indeed, having a 20-goal man on your books isn’t a prerequisite for promotion at all. Of the 15 sides to be elevated to the top flight in the last five years only three of them possessed strikers who had netted 20 league goals in the campaign. Last season holds a perfect case in point. West Brom’s Graham Dorrans and Chris Brunt top scored for Albion with 13 league goals each. As the weekend evidenced, Leicester are clearly still wasting too many scoring opportunities. They have made more attempts on goal and hit the target more often than any other Championship side, but their return of 23 goals makes them only the leagues’s 13th most prolific scorers. That said, City’s current crop, and indeed any who might join them, should not be burdened with the pressure of being the 20-goal a season man. The Foxes had 13 different goalscorers in the league last year and it will take the same sort of team effort to make the side climb the table this year too. The signs are encouraging. Saturday was only the second time in 11 league games that the Foxes had failed to find the net. And, believe it or not, City’s chance conversion rate is improving. After the QPR match Leicester had scored with just 5.4% of their attempts on goal. That rate has now improved to 9.35%. It’s still not great, only Millwall, Middlesbrough and Hull have been more wasteful than City, but it is getting better. Honest."
Izzet is God Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 Nobody reckoning that Nugent will be there or there-abouts come the end of the season then? I think he'll bag 15 easy if he gets games, plays well and doesn't get a bad injury. To be honest, I think he'll be our out and out main front man this year.

He scored 14 for Portsmouth last season which isn't a bad return at all. With the chances we can make for him he should eclipse that amount and maybe even be the 20 goal man
Bellend Sebastian Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 I was a 19 goals a season striker for fifteen years and it's a constant source of resentment to me that no-one was interested. I knew a 21 goal a season man as well, broke him it did, very inflexible these football clubs you know. The worst though was a 20 goal a season man, got that for five years straight, then in his sixth season, he only got 19, bringing his average down to 19.833333333 a season. They withdrew their contract offer, the bastards
Spudulike Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 20-goal a season strikers are extremely rare and Leicester haven’t fielded one in the top two divisions since Gary Lineker. Dickov in the 2002/2003 promotion season
manfromuncles Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 I would say as long as we keep providing the chances to score and get that shot to goal ratio up a bit, we don't need a so called 20 goal a season striker. We may already have one or two in the side. If Kingy had kept up his record and not gone off the boil at the tail end of the season, he could have netted 20. Gallagher didn't do too badly either. Nugent scored 14 last season so could easily replicate that for us. If we had 3 or 4 players scoring closer to 15 each then we don't need to have one man banging in all the goals.
MC Prussian Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 With the current signings and the members from last season, we do have a good mix of potential goalscorers. Nugent, Gallagher, and KIng can all score 10 to 15 goals in this division. Danns has shown in the past that he's good for the odd goal here and there, so I can see him add another 5 to 10 goals to the total tally. Don't count out Vassell, either. He's facing his first full season with us and he's gotten a lot better, almost back to full fitness ever since he joined us. And I'm sure the rest of the team will pose just as much a threat. Oakley, Wellens, Abe (free-kicks), Dyer and Masilela have a knack for coming up with good shots that end up in the net here and there. Before you know what's happened, you count it all together and you end up with about 60 to 70 goals scored. The other area we need to improve is defense - you could also say that our back four need by far more attention than our striker situation. It's vital to have defenders that know what they're doing and defenders that know each other, so that they can communicate well enough. This was probably our main downfall last season, because we had too many changes and too many loan players in defense. We need options in terms of attacking prowess but a 20+ goalscorer (as good as it may sound on paper) can also be more of a burden than a revelation. Especially when opposing teams have figured out a way of marking him properly. It's vital to be perceived as being somewhat "unpredictable". That means other teams will have to watch out for a far bigger amount of our players capable of scoring. I'd say we need another winger and a good striker who can add some more variables to Eriksson's system.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 We only need to sign a 19 goal a season striker because we can make up the difference with a 1 goal a season one. Kermogant would fit the latter role perfectly

We should of gone for Chopra a bargain at 1.5 mill and the best striker outside the premier for some years! although he carries a bit of baggage maybe it put sven off!!
Fox92 Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 I think we are missing one but I have full confidence that most of the squad can score: King and Nugent will most proabably score between 10 and 15 goals. Gallagher might score around 11, but I can't see him getting any more. His goals tend to come from long range shots, free kicks and penalties. Danns might score the odd goal here and there, like Vassell. Also, don't count Matt Mills out. He could score more goals than the midfielders. We've all seen him from crossers, corners and free kicks etc, he's a bullet in the air. Then you've got players such as Wellens and Abe who may get 5 goals each. And off of the bench, Steve Howard and Dyer. Howard is always likely to score at least three times a season, and Dyer sometimes comes up with a goal. In terms of goalscorer, I do think we are missing one but we may not need one to go up. It comes back to the defence as well. If we can keep more clean sheets then we've got a chance with all the goals within the squad. I don't think QPR had a real 20+ goalscorer, but they didn't concede many at all and obviously their midfield scored alot of goals.

SOCCERROO FOX Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 So many people talk about the 20 goal a season striker but when we had proflic goal scorers such as Fryatt and Yakubu they were lambasted for being to slow, fat, lazy etc. Agree with Babylon and Mc Prussian give me an even spread of goal scorers, more men the opposition need to shut down Sorry to bring up Fryatt again

jock2612 Posted 12 July 2011 Posted 12 July 2011 I know have said this before but Billy Sharpe has the potential for 20 and we know he was allowed to speak to Southampton who offered 3.25m Forget Maynard !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yakubu is off the table Everton have cancelled their acceptance of our £3.5m bid and The Yak is on their pre-season tour & has settled back in very well I'd read this as being that Everton were after someone & can't get him so have decided on keeping the Yak I too think we need someone, I thought CMS was that man, Maynard could be too. Looking abroad may mean we save a few pennies, but an overseas signing is inherently more risky because of settling in, both into the club but also the country, I'm not sure we can risk that, not to mention this division is pretty unique in world football.
