Real Madrid Post-Match thread

Having read through all the posts on this thread to date, I do wonder if some of the other 32187 crowd were watching the same game as me.

This was Real Madrid we were playing! It was Real for real, a fixture that I never thought I would see in my lifetime.

And Leicester were magnificent! Yes, Real we readily accept are in essence, in a different class but what we lacked in speed and movement off the ball, we made up for in tenacity and a terrier-like approach, constantlysnapping at their heels, coupled with some brilliant fearless legal tackling, even in the 'area' at the same time, producing a high standard of good football ourselves.

As for comments re some of the individuals, to my mind, Neil Danns was a revelation. He wasn't just 'decent' or 'alright' or 'fair', he was outstanding and produced today one of the most determined and exciting midfield displays that took me back to the days of Frank McLintock / Bobby Roberts /Matt Elliott etc,

Similarly, Matt Mills is, I reckon, a reincarnation of SteveWalsh who also wore the No 5 shirt and he will become a future City legend. To my mind, he is a strong candidate for the captain's armband. His two head injuries were sustained through firstly a fearless flying header not much above knee height in repulsing a Real attackand secondly, another flying header in traditional centre-forward style, colliding with Real's goalie which laid them both out for the count. Most other players would have gone off but not Matt Mills, until he felt partly guilty in conceding Real's first goal.

Sol Bamba played as if his life depended on it. Why did wehave to wait until the 2nd half before we heard 'his' song?

Was it Kasper or his dad, Peter that was in goal? I doubt his dad would have bettered that display, Paul Konchesky was Paul Konchesky – thoroughly professional , always giving 100%.

And David Nugent showed his class even though he has only just resumed full training as I understand it. He looked totally shattered whenhe came off.

Yuki Abe made one mistake but more than made up for it witha cracking display overall.

Yes, we probably do want an established prolific goalscorerbut until Sven locates an 'established-prolific-goalscorer' bush because they don't grow on trees, then he should start with both Lloyd 'on-fire-Dyer andVassell, the latter can move with the speed of a hare, the former can move atthe speed of light.

The really good news is that we won't play Real Madrid again, or any other team of that quality, at least not for another two seasons until we meet them in the Champions League.

I don't know what other Championship teams think of the setup at Leicester but if I wasn't a City fan, it would frighten the hell outof me.

What a great read. Good post. I think the team does have the look of a lower to mid Premier league team now. Other than West Ham clearly ahead of the rest in the CCC. Wont win every game but will be in everyone to win it. No one can assure promotion but this team is set to give it a go.

Mexican wave ftw

Enjoying the school holidays are we?

The schoolkids and day trippers who started that made me squirm. I trust the proper fans will reclaim the ground for the Reading game.

Definitely feels like the bar has been raised with this summers signings. Players who were seen as strong last season now looking a little average in comparison. The standard's been set, and I think some people might have to fight quite hard for their places. The exception to this today was Bamba who did the business.

Another guy Sven brought in. Loved his energy on the pitch last season and that silly grin he gets when he scores the clumsiest goals. He's the sort of player I'd take from club to club if I was a manager just to have his personality around the club. True legend.

It was also just a meaningless pre-season friendly for them, while it was the game of a lifetime for a lot of our lads. Despite this, they beat us comfortably without ever going out of second gear. I'm not siding with the pessimists, just saying the true picture is probably between their view and yours.

Must have been a lot of day trippers and school kids there then as i seem to recall most of the crowd doing it . And just what is your problem with having a bit of fun ? It was a friendly for christ sake lighten up .

When I was a kid guys making statements like that really got on my nerves - belittling the youngsters for being young... Fandom doesn't come with age; I spent much of my childhood screaming at match of the day. By all means have qualms with how they express their love for the club, after all we all have different opinions (hence my Poznan thread), but don't claim they aren't true fans - that's just being unfair.

The fans in L1 make me laugh the most with "glory supporters" and "where were you when we were s***". Only at Leicester would a group of fans feel aggrieved that their stadium was packed out with fans - laughable. When will they realise that fans can do what ever they want at a game, they don't have to stand, chant, drink beer or anything, it is totally up to them, as it also is as to when they choose to attend. "Ohhh Daddy I'm the biggest Lestaa fan cus I sit in L1" hahaha.

Great day out - the owners went to so much trouble to make an occasion of it and the demonstration of ball skills was brilliant.

On the field, even acknowledgng that we were always going to be chasing shadows for much of the time, I was disappointed.

We might have spent millions but they were still making shoddy and unnecessary mistakes in defence - the first goal being a donation - and there was just no-one showing any real desire to get into the box on the rare occasions we attacked.

Tactically I saw the same old failings. People taking far too many touches, failing to close down quickly, lack of movement off the ball, careless or thoughtless passing, not getting numbers forward in attack and a lack of impetus until the last few minutes.

Yes there were bright spots. Kasper Schmeichel looked desperate to be a winner and made one or two telling saves while Bamba and Konchesky were outstanding in defence.

Nugent looked like a lonely runner - promising but hopelessly short of support - Dyer took his goal venomously but there were one or two others - Wellens in particular - who looked lost.

I'm finding this thread very hard to believe - from the moment this friendly was declared we all (should've) knew it would reveal to us very little vis a vis the coming season. It was always more a publicity stunt and morale boosting exercise than anything else. Am I pleased with the scoreline? Yes. Am I going to read anything into the player's performances other than gaining a little more confidence in our defensive abilities going into the new season? Let's wait til we play opposition on the same league level before getting too pleased/upset.

Fookin hope so.... It was embarrassing

we played well saying we play real.

the defends was good and mid but i thought we had no striker on. i was trying to think who's playing in the middle because we would go down the wing and no one was in the box waiting or near by to get the ball.

Gotta be happy with 2-1.

Didn't see the game but it looks like we'll have something to cheer about this season. Heard Kasper had a good game though!

Can't wait for Saturday now

I'm usually abroad for the start of the seaon so this'll be the first match of the season I've attended in yonks although 11 points out of 40 in the last 10 years suggests we may struggle

Booked a hotel in Coventry so better dig out that long sleeved shirt for the pub crawl in the evening.

Last time I went on the piss in Cov it was to The Eclipse.........................that place and The Specials being the only decent thing to come out of that shithole.

So any tips on decent pubs would be appreciated.

get a cab to birmingham!!

I'm out in brimingham, doing the west brom pub crawl then back to broad street, probably foggs first then chi bar

For all their tricks and techinical ability their finishing was woeful! I can't read too much into our display but some encouraging performances particularly from Sol who restored my faith in him yesterday.

Its not too often in our lifetimes that we will see a packed house, Real Madrid and Ruth Lorenzo's tits all in one sunny afternoon.

I thought our defence was fantastic until Mills went off. The only reason Madrid scored the first was because he was suffering a concussion and couldn't see the ball properly, hardly a defensive blunder was it?!

The four top teams in Eurpoe faced off yesterday.

Man U beat Barca 2:1

Real beat Leicester 2:1

We should be proud of that result.

Can believe the negative nancies on here.

Real brought 4 world superstars on as subs at halftime replacing other world superstars. We finished 10th in the champion ship last season.

Be real, Be Proud.

We played well against a class of team we may not meet in a competitive match in the next decade.

Whatever the reasons it was a defensive blunder. If you'd argue that Mills shouldn't have been out there cos he couldn't see properly fair enough but I'd presume that, given the fact that he did continue, that he could see perfectly well. And yes, the defence did cope well in general. My point is that we were undone, not by the opposition in the first instance, but by our own unforced error...just as we were so often last season. I you're going to win things you've got to concentrate and cut daft mistakes to a minimum.

Kasper was chuffing quality and only a deluded berk would say otherwise after today's performance. Two blinding stops off the top of my head, great distribution and he seems to have a bit of fight about him. Running 30 yards telling players he's known for only a few weeks to stop pissing around on corners was nice to see. Takes no shit, I like it.

:appl: We've needed that for a long time. I hope it's infectious.

I'm sorry, but wtf are the Leeds fans going on about?

No wonder he didn't feel like hanging about!

That second quote seems to me like a Leeds fan berating his fellow Leeds fans for saying Kasper is rubbish now that he's moved clubs.

Enjoyable game and a good test for out defence. It made me laugh when people left early and missed seeing Leicester scoring against Real. There where plenty of positives, especially the way Bamba played. Vassell still runs into dead ends too much for me though.

I thought Ramos was outstanding for Madrid and was easily their best performer. Anyone else thought Kaka looked poor?

I know ive bitched about people leaving early before, but seriously, what are you comin for... i mean even if your just there to see RM, surely you want to see as much as you can? Someone near me, missed Real's first goal coz they went to get food before the break.. then missed our goal coz the had left early. :dunno::frusty:
