Fernando Torres

I start this topic after a conversation I had Monday morning at work. It was my misfortune to be talking to a Man Utd fan about Sunday's clash with Chelsea. Obviously the topic of the Torres miss came up, and this guy proclaimed that "it couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke". This is also not the first instance of this, with numerous facebook statuses referring to him in several different derogatory manners. All this has left me somewhat confused.

Since when did this guy become so hated? As far as I can tell he's pretty much a model professional. I am yet to hear of any off the pitch misdemeanors and on the pitch he has undoubted quality, even through the current bad spell. The move from Liverpool seems to have caused a stir and the fans are quick to forget the good service he gave them. Most fans would agree that he has more chance of winning trophies at Chelsea then at Liverpool, even though money would of course have also been a factor.

To contrast we look at Man Utds goal-getter. Yes he is also hated by many but with good reason: Rumours of nights with females with sepia memories, loud mouthing cameras, thrown punches, taunting the club that made him, wanting to move before deciding to stay, moaning at England fans, etc.

I'm not saying everyone should love Torres and the £50m price tag will undoubtedly mean that large sections will be eager for him to fail, but I am at a loss as to what he has done to become a bit of a hate figure. Can anyone shed some light?

Some people just feel the need to have someone to hate I doubt there's much logic to it, I think also it depends on how much they might be in the news and how easy it is to formulate jokes about them.

Because he handed in a transfer request on the last day and left his team. Well thats why most liverpool fans hate him

...and yet there were so many Leicester fans wishing and hoping that Maynard would do the same for us.

99% of people would have done the same, in any walk of life. If a better job came up, offering more money, and better career prospects, would you "stay loyal", or ask in the correct formal manner if your current employers would allow you a dignified exit? I know what I'd do.

It's not as if he spent the whole transfer window slagging off Liverpool and sucking up to Chelsea, then after his moved rubbed it in Liverpool's face and told everyone how shit a club they are etc. He's remain dignified and gentlemanly throughout.

There's no point speaking to a Man Utd fan about any player playing outside of their club. Most supporters of most clubs will have a certain level of objectivity about opposing teams & players......but not Man Utd. Ask the same fan what he thinks of Shearer? They couldn't quite believe he would turn down the 'biggest, most successful' club in the world.......how dare he??? They would have jumped at the chance of buying Torres.......but they couldn't afford him!!!

And yet they had no problem with prying Andy Carroll away from his hometown club.

For me, because he has a really irritating face, stupid hair and a misery-guts demeanour. May be stupid reasons but at least I'm honest!

Behave. Look how much United spent during the summer on Jones, Young and De Gea.

If Ferguson had wanted Torres he could have got him.

I thought Manchester United hated him because he played for Liverpool. I am sure they boo the likes of Danny Murphy as well :dunno:

Not true, Torres said he had absolutely no intention of going to ManUre.

He doesn't play for Man Utd, and regardless if what any of them say, they'd love him there. He's an ex Liverpool player and currently playing for the team that has been their closest title rivals for the past few years.

I dont hate him. I love this man. It saddens me to see how much he has fallen from grace.

He's only 27 years old so he can still return to his prime.

This. When he came to the Premiership, in that first season, easily the best striker in the world. Bar none.

He's obviously suffered a lot from his fitness and personal confidence but I do hope he can regain that sort of form. I hate Chelsea with a passion but at his best he's phenomenally entertaining and that's why we watch football, isn't it? To be entertained.

I think the only way Chelsea can challenge for the title this season is if Torres finds his form. If he does, he'll notch 25 easy. Superb on his day.

On another point, if he had knocked in that chance, everyone would be going on about what a good performance he put in.

Hope Chelsea don't ruin another talent.

I really like Torres, but can't help but take a bit of joy from the failure on Chelsea's part.

From a personal perspective, I think this represents a failure of the whole mega-budget strategy of cretins like Chelsea - which is, for me, satisfying.

I think Torres is an absolute class act, the miss was shocking and a striker of his ability should be finishing those chances, however I honestly believe if he gets a bit of form going he will soon justify that ridiculous price tag.
