AjcW Posted 9 November 2011 Posted 9 November 2011 Oh Mike.... Just when things were starting to go well... You've actually managed to just take a massive part of a whole cities sole and murder it... not just the football club. The teams winning.... and isn't losing... ... The fans are starting to want to murder you a little less... ... And then you do this... ... I can confirm that my family aren't best pleased with this decision!! Expect lots of "having a party when ashley dies" chants again soon.
ajthefox Posted 10 November 2011 Posted 10 November 2011 It's had the sponsorship in it's name for a while now already, this article is just over 2 years old to the day.. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/n/newcastle_united/8342406.stm Newcastle United have renamed their ground the sportsdirect.com @ St James' Park Stadium for the immediate future. The Championship club said last week it was looking to sell the naming rights to St James' Park from next season. But it has now decided to use the ground to showcase the retail company controlled by club owner Mike Ashley until the end of the current campaign. "We will showcase Sports Direct until the end of the season," chief executive Derek Llambias told BBC Newcastle. "I'm sure we're going to get a sponsor in for next season."
The Doctor Posted 10 November 2011 Posted 10 November 2011 While that's all a bit ****ing retarded from Ashley - I highly doubt it'll change a thing. It's always been St James Park and probably always will be in the minds of the fans. After all, who actually calls St. Mary's by it's proper name?

Somewhat proving your point.... wtf is St Mary's proper name????
The Doctor Posted 10 November 2011 Posted 10 November 2011 Somewhat proving your point.... wtf is St Mary's proper name???? The Friends Provident St Marys Stadium edit: and while not the most accurate source in the world, according to Wikipedia, Filbert Street was "the City Business Stadium" from the start of the 90's.
Libertine Posted 10 November 2011 Posted 10 November 2011 The Friends Provident St Marys Stadium edit: and while not the most accurate source in the world, according to Wikipedia, Filbert Street was "the City Business Stadium" from the start of the 90's. Not any more. Though the point remains.
The Doctor Posted 10 November 2011 Posted 10 November 2011 Not any more. Though the point remains. You pedant. I'll rephrase the question then: Who actually called St Mary's as The Friends .... Stadium in the time it was officially called that?
Koke Posted 10 November 2011 Posted 10 November 2011 I thought this was common knowledge? This is sad. I don't know why we are laughing at them. We sold our soul long time ago and we are jumping from one stadium sponsor to another sponsor like a prostitute. Newcastle United have 130 years of proud herit\age & history and their fuckwit owner is willing to throw it down the toilet for an extra £5-10m. I don't even like Newcastle, and this is pissing me off.
Guest MattP Posted 10 November 2011 Posted 10 November 2011 Good job our owners would never do that......
ajthefox Posted 10 November 2011 Posted 10 November 2011 Good job our owners would never do that...... A stadium they've been in since 1892 that has always had the same name and a stadium we've been in for 10 years that was named after a sponsor anyway. Yeah, same thing I suppose...

Yeah, same thing I suppose... Ah....so had Top tried to put King Power on Filbert Street we would of all been in uproar then?
Mike the Metal Ed Posted 10 November 2011 Posted 10 November 2011 Ah....so had Top tried to put King Power on Filbert Street we would of all been in uproar then? Uproar is a strong word, but I'd certainly be against it.
Finnegan Posted 10 November 2011 Author Posted 10 November 2011 The thing is, previously he compromised, kept the stadium name and just added his ridiculous website address to the front. It was far easier to ignore, in essence it still was St. James' - as St. Mary's is St. Mary's, with a tag. Now it really is just... Sports Direct. lol I should be much more outraged as I am, given my usual stance on all things capitalist bastard. But that's just hilarious.
Finnegan Posted 10 November 2011 Author Posted 10 November 2011 Ah....so had Top tried to put King Power on Filbert Street we would of all been in uproar then? We aren't Geordies, simple as. They have a massive penchant for horrendous over-reaction, self-righteousness and indignation. I'm sure we'd have been upset if they'd havae renamed Filbert Street but we'd probably also have gotten over it with much less hysteria. I especially like that it was originally a "stop gap" to encourage potential investors to see what they could have plastered across Newcastle and now he's just gone all-out and used his own name anyway in full.

Geordies over react to something short term? Never Alan from Newcastle on talksport just now: "Just as we were about to start a challenge for the champions league this happens"...

Jon the Hat Posted 10 November 2011 Posted 10 November 2011 Newcastle fans who somehow think their club is better than any other club and that they have the right to expect the same level of investment as others clubs who have accepted stadium sponsorship without going down that route are self righteous idiots. Fed up with hearing it to be honest. They happily accept the benefits of spending the owners cash, and with that comes the right to earn revenue to support that spending.
Guest MattP Posted 10 November 2011 Posted 10 November 2011 Exeter finally get exclusive naming rights to their home, good.
Babylon Posted 10 November 2011 Posted 10 November 2011 Ah....so had Top tried to put King Power on Filbert Street we would of all been in uproar then? I'd certainly have felt different about it. Changing the stadium name from a crisp to a shop means little to me.
